Diet Soda Habit as Bad for Teeth as Meth Addiction, Study Claims (http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=170067)

By Dennis Thompson
HealthDay Reporter

THURSDAY, May 23 (HealthDay News) -- Heavy consumption of diet soda can damage teeth as badly as methamphetamine or crack cocaine, a new study contends.

"You look at it side-to-side with 'meth mouth' or 'coke mouth,' it is startling to see the intensity and extent of damage more or less the same," said Dr. Mohamed Bassiouny, a professor of restorative dentistry at the Temple University School of Dentistry in Philadelphia.

Methamphetamine, crack cocaine and soda -- sweetened or not -- are all highly acidic and can cause similar dental problems, Bassiouny said in a study published recently in the journal General Dentistry.

The acid in soda is in the form of citric acid and phosphoric acid, Bassiouny said. Without good dental hygiene, constant exposure can cause erosion and significant oral damage, he said.

I know that this topic is probably dead, but is just need to write something.

The science in the diet soda meth study is so bad that it's basically BS.

I used to drink 4 cans of Coke a day, but flossed and brushed daily also...a friend of mine used to drink 4 cans of Dr. Pepper each day, sometimes more.

I had no significant tooth decay after learning flossing = healthy gums, less bleeding, less pain at dentist appt. My friend still has all of his teefs.

otoh, I have seen MANY meth addicts with no gums and few teeth. Coke is NOT the same as meth.

Even if the study is bogus, there is still a lot of sugar and calories in pop.  I'll stick to water, tea, and chocolate milk :)

A HELL of a lot of a sugar. It's almost double what it was 5 or 10 years ago. Check the "nutritional facts" on a can of soda pop. It's insane to drink any of that garbage on a regular basis and expect to be healthy.

(Not that I am the perfect picture of health..I still have a ways to go to get in shape but cutting back my soda consumption about 90 to 95% has helped a lot.)
I bought some frozen concentrate lemonade this week.  Ju-das Priest!  That had more sugar in one serving than Dr. Pepper has!  That stuff was overly sweet.  Not even diluting it with iced tea, Arnold Palmer style, couldn't cut down the overly sweetness.  No wonder I haven't bought concentrated juices in a long, long while!  I had the dentist cleaning last week, no problems.  Artificial sweeteners upset my stomach.  Asperatame turns my urine rosy.  Go figure.

Glad I've finally kicked the soda habit then! I remember drinking diet soda at some points almost exclusively (as the water was barely potable where I once lived and it was cheaper than bottled water). Now I'm in civilization and diet pepsi becomes an occasional gaming/movie night indulgence.

If I drink a soda, I drink diet soda. The acid in soda is the problem, not the sugar. My son lost all his front teeth by 20 from Pepsi. My teeth failed fast when I drank soda daily, due to lack of water and/or funds at the time.

Dieting wise, sugar is the culprit.

Uh oh! I better roll back the last thirty years of drinking diet soda.
Or I could stock up on the ten for ten deal on 2 liters.
