Title: starting and losing
Post by: The Middle Way on June 05, 2007, 07:39:21 PM
Senator McCain, today: "Presidents don't lose wars. Political parties don't lose wars. Nations lose wars,"

What's wrong with this statement?

Maybe the president was born in Namibia and the republican party is some Torie british outgrowth, why should they care for that foreign war by a nation they feel in no way linked to (sic).

McCain was full of it tonight.  He's normally tolerable and I generally at least have some morsel of respect for him... but he was really off the mark tonight.  He strays farther and farther from where I feel we need to go.

What's wrong with the statement?  When you are responsible, you need to distance yourself from taking responsibility.

What's wrong is that he is separating the nation from its political parties, when the rhetoric suits him.

Y'all be nice to poor Johnny McCain.  He was a Prisoner of War, ya know.  He suffered horrible treatment from his captors, all for the sake of this country.  I respect and admire him for that.

I also think it made him flaky as heck.

The problem with the statement is that two-thirds of it is a lie.  While technically true that Nations lose wars, the whole thing stinks of blame avoidance and lack of accountability.  "It wasn't the President, no, no no.  It wasn't Republicans, no, no, no.  It was you!  Yeah you, the whole country.  You guys lost the war...all your bitching and whining."  Yeah, that makes me really wanna vote for this guy.

Typically all three go hand in hand. For without a nation's people backing the war, it would never be overly successful. WWII vs Vietnam.

The problem with this President is the same that we had from the one before him, he thought that he knew better than those who conduct war on what we needed and had to do. Why? Because both were afraid of becoming very unpopular and that is the wrong way to be a President and a horrible way to decide how, when, and why we go to war.

We need a leader willing to lead because it's the right thing to do, not because an election year is coming up and one needs to look good for the camera and polls.

I like your perspective None.  Cool handle too.

I think that he said something without understanding the implications.  But the meaning of his words takes no responsibility.  Like Cindi said.

I think that just about all of what I've heard him say fits what the Dynamic Duo said.
A very bitter and cynical man, IMO. None too bright either, if he pops off 'without understanding the implications' allatime. I wouldn't vote for him for dogcatcher.
