Title: What do you do to the toilet seat before you sit?
Post by: Cindy on June 08, 2013, 05:13:01 AM
This thread is totally motivated by one from suzi who asked if you stood or sat to pee.

I was aghast

What a question?

So... I have visited cubicles or stalls when the the other stalls seem to have a lot of paper activity going on. I have thought that possibly the person was redecorating the entire stall they where in.

Or maybe people are covering toilet seats with paper.

WTF it's a toilet!!!!

So please tell me; what do you do with the toilet seat before you sit on it?

I presume none home ones but nothing will surprise me anymore!!

Oh my answer?

I sit on them, nothing more nothing less. I have a barrier of skin which is impermeable to bacteria and virus.

No problems for me.

Oh what have I done??

Cindy

Unless the toilet seat has pee or blood on it I just sit down on it as it it were my home toilet.

There's nothing wrong with putting paper on the seat. And some bathrooms have paper seat covers for your convenience. At work I don't worry about it since we have a locked private restroom for employees(all women except for the dork and I don't know if he uses it or not).

Not a whole lot at the moment but getting over male habits and in general just not caring as a way of coping hasn't helped that.

However I have as recently started to have a break down in those behaviors. So I generally give the toilet a quick wipe clean with a small wad of toilet tissue before sitting down even if the seat looks clean to me.

I guess here's to taking better care of what is becoming one of my favorite parts of my body.  :D

I'm with Cindy. If it's clean, I sit. If it's not, I go in search of clean. If all available fixtures need cleaning, I'll do my best to wipe one down with whatever paper goods are available. That's a last resort.

Haha, sounds like you've been behind me in the public restrooms. I'm the master of ass-gaskets. I'm terrified of catching something so I make paper covers if I just can't hold it til I get home.

Having had to spend a lifetime sitting to pee, I've seen some pretty disgusting toilets in my time. Women's toilets are frequently used by young children so it's not unusual to find pee (or worse) on the seats... so I learned the habit of wiping every single public toilet seat I sit on because sitting on somebody else's wet patch grosses me out.

If the seat was particularly gross (i.e. red or brown mess) I'll just hover over it. Yes, I've even done No. 2s whilst hovering - because when you gotta go, you gotta go. ;)

But as Cindy says, your chances of catching anything from sitting down are staggeringly small, particularly if you don't have any open wounds on the backs of your legs.

Maybe I'm a germ phobic person, but I 'hover' to go to the bathroom if I'm in a public place, I have NEVER sat on a public toilet seat before. There are things like 'pin worms' that you can get just by sitting on the seat (I know more often children get them than adults.)

If my little boy has to go and needs to sit down, I always have antibacterial wipes with me, I wipe the seat down then put a layer of toilet paper down for him since he has to hold onto the seat (he's little and would otherwise most likely fall in!)

if the person before had some pee/dump/blood/spit/etc on the seat and then carefully wipe it off with tp (which is the right thing to do i suppose), would you seat on it after an hour? how about after 10 seconds?
clinically you have little chance of catching anything...but hey?

Alcohol wipes and seat covers. The plastic, waterproof type of seat covers. I carry both at all times now. There's a lot of nasty stuff that lives on a public toilet seat. Yuck.

First I sprayed with "Lysol Disinfectant," then I wiped it with toilette paper until dry, then I sit...

I also carry baby-wipes and hand lotion on my purse

My mom tried to teach me to cover the seat with paper before I sit, but I soon found it an unnecessary effort, and I just told her 'Yes, I did', as a kid when she asked me, lolol ::)
She still covers it, I don't see why. I just wipe it when it's dirty, and otherwise; my skin isn't malfunctioning or anything, it can keep stuff out, like what it's intended to do! :)

I work at a hospital and have been sprayed with of the above in my time. That said you're making me want to carry around a can of Lysol. Incidentally time is not a factor in if the seat is safe. Cleanliness is. You can touch a door handle while sick and the germs will survive until someone picks them, wipes them clean, or they hit their death cycle (where food runs low and toxins build up). Considering these are bathrooms and not testtubes they will never hit a death cycle so if it looks clean is a far batter start than filthy.

Generally, I scream and run away.  If you've been in some of the public bathrooms that I've been, you will completely understand.

Quick wipe down if I see some actual filth (and no other stall is available!), but otherwise just sit down.

Back when I was fresh from GRS, I did carry baby wipes in my purse to wipe myself - public toilet paper was usually too rough - and I figured it couldn't hurt to use one on the seat too. But that was mostly because the nurses had made me paranoid about infections of the surgical site and UTIs; now that I'm healed up and no more prone to either than a cis woman, i don't worry about it.

Hand sanitizer and wipe with tp.

Germophobia is definitely not my thing. If I don't see anything on the seat, it's clean enough for me to sit on. If there's something on it, I look for another toilet. If every single toilet in the entire bathroom has something on it, I grumble, wipe it off, and deal with it.

I don't go crazy "redecorating" but I do cover with t p.

I have the wonderful opportunity to use the portable toilets at construction sites sometimes.  It's probably not the same degree of clean as the toilet you just sit on Cindy.  That barrier of skin...not enough for this girl in those toilets!

Kia Ora Cindy,

Re: "What do you do to the toilet seat before you sit?"

::) I don't know about others but I always lift the 'lid' on the seat... it can get quite messy otherwise ;) ;D :D

I just wish that if people must put paper on the seat, they'd take it off again and dispose of it after they'd done their business. I hate walking into a cubicle and seeing someone's elaborate hypochondria barrier left there for me to deal with.

I rake it into the toilet and flush. Hand sanitizer is a good idea, hadn't thought of that.

I give it a quick visual inspection. Unfortunately some pigs piss all over everything or leave their dump floating for me to flush as if it's something they are proud of. One woman's room looked as if someone had decorated the stall with her tampax drippings, so pigs aren't exclusively male. One thing that is really disturbing is to set your purse on the floor and take it home and park it on the table or kitchen counter, now that's really problematic!

I never ever set my purse on the floor, if there isn't a hook for it, I hold it.

If I can hold it, I wait to go home. If not then I wipe the sest clean even if it looks clean already... then make a paper or toilet seat cover barrier then spead as little time as possible seated. If I have something with me (my wallet or bag or whatever) it stays on me or in my lap.

Im afraid of germs

funny! but in public no lids, mine in never down unless I have been cleaning, and I leave the seat the way it is supposed to be. and if a man ever visits I expect him to replace the seat this is a womn's house! (I get 3 visitors a year)

In public if the seat is wet I dry it thoroughly and sit, if dirty I try a different one.  I don't use the gaskets I try to save trees where I can  ;D
and I always wash up afterwards
