Title: Testosterone Rebound on Estradiol
Post by: Verity on June 09, 2013, 07:25:13 PM
This is my first post, but I've been reading all the wonderful comments on this site for quite some time!

I'm in my early fifties, and started on transdermal compounded Estradiol gel about a year ago.  The issue is that I can't use the gel for more than a few weeks because my hair starts to fall out, I get irritable, and begin to look quite haggard like I haven't slept in days!

It appears to me, and my doc, that I'm producing androgens to fight the Estradiol.  Has anyone else had this happen?  Oddly, I can't take Spiro because it gives me tummy troubles, even on a low dose.

Thanks, ahead of time, for your ideas!

Thanks for your reply, girl you look fierce.  Yes, it is a bit confusing; I have to agree!  In answer to your question, when I'm on Estradiol, my levels show moderate (female) levels of Estradiol; but, also very high (male) levels of Free Testosterone, and moderate (male) levels of DHT.  Also, when I'm off Estradiol, Free Testosterone drops significantly.  My doc, a great guy who's a specialist in gender hormones, is mystified.

So, it does appear as if my body is ramping-up androgen production in the presence of Estradiol.  Now, maybe this question is not appropriate for this forum; if that is the case, then maybe someone knows of a better place to post it?

Thanks, all!

Well I am not a doctor or endo but possibly the rise in E is causing your T to drop and your body thinks something is wrong and ramps up T production? I have no idea. Hope things work out for you.

Hi Joanna Dark,

Thanks.  Yes, I see what you mean.  Though, after thinking a bit more about my original question, I now see it's too technical, so I don't expect any more replies.  Thanks to those who read the question, and to girl you look fierce and Joanna Dark for your kind replies!  This type of question is best left to Endocrinologists, I think.  Sorry for any inconvenience!

There are three T measurements and you need them all to get the entire picture: total, free and biovailable.  Mayo clinic has very reproducible and accurate methods for the analysis of all three plus they are cheap!  You also need to take the tests at the same time each day, preferably within the first hour of waking.
Example:  Total T can drop on E due to the effect that E has on the testicles.  However, because both hormones are carried around the body via the same protein, free T can actually go up for a "short" period of time.  The length of time "short" is depends a lot on synthesis and metabolism.....
