My employer's support has helped me challenge prejudice surrounding my gender change

"I felt targeted by some of my fellow social work students because I was different. I wasn't a man, and I wasn't a woman, even though I'd had all of this surgery done," says Kay*, not her real name, recalling her experiences of social work training as a member of the transgender community.

"A couple of them told me that I was unfit to become a social worker and I shouldn't be working with children," she says. "This was two and a half years into a three year degree. I was offended by that. I put in a complaint but it went unheard."
