Title: Necklaces
Post by: xander on June 20, 2013, 02:22:34 AM
Hey guys I love necklaces but I'm having a lot of trouble finding anything. I've been looking on ebay and etsy but I just don't really know what to search for.

I want one with a black/brown leather or cord necklace with some kind of pendant on it. I'm not really sure what kind of pendant I'm looking for, so it's hard to figure out what to search. Any suggestions?

I have found a nice one on a fantasy fair last year, I really like it. I tried making a pic.
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1299.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fag80%2FBella_Kohler%2F130620-112337_zps7c1570f4.jpg&hash=41b8948700ba2e3370482d2dcc55c4c71048d45d)
Hope you can see it properly.

I bought it on a Dutch fantasy festival called Castlefest (I still have the band on my arm), they have lots of those things -and even better!- there. But yeah, it's kind of far away for you I guess, LOL!
Maybe try etsy, there they sell many handmade things, which can be very nice.  (EDIT: oops, I see you already checked Etsy. I should read before I write, lol!)
I made a really quick search and found these things;

Oooh, I have a necklace that is almost exactly what you describe.
My webcam is not great, but you get the idea.

I bought it in a street market in Ao Nang, Thailand, and the thing on the end is a crude Buddha carved in jade. I wear this thing pretty much constantly, I love it so much!

One place I occasionally browse is this site:
http://www.nobleromancoins.com/index.php?cPath=82 (http://www.nobleromancoins.com/index.php?cPath=82)
They have some genuine Roman/pre-Roman pendants and charms (usually expensive) and some reproductions (cheaper). It would be easy to get a plain leather string to put them on.
This one is quite cool - http://www.nobleromancoins.com/product_info.php?products_id=941 (http://www.nobleromancoins.com/product_info.php?products_id=941)
Their rings are pretty neat too.

I'd suggest searching for surfer necklaces. I have a few and typical ones I have, have an oval shape block (mine are painted wood) at the end with some kinda simple etched design on it.  I personally like the leather cord design ones where there's a sliding knot and you can choose the length.  I find that works best for me and my smallish neck circumference. Also, not so important if you've had top surgery, but I like to keep them short to draw attention AWAY from my chest. Lol.

Erik! Thanks for the links - what were you searching? I can't seem to find a good key word to return items on etsy. I've just been searching "necklace men" and  there's a lot of crap to sift through.

Lajs - that is quite similar to what I'm after. I have been thinking more of metal pendants but maybe I should look into some gems or stone ones too.

Jack I don't think I've seen any wood designs. I'm not a huge fan of the generic surfer styles with the shells but I'll try searching for some other surfer styles.

I just used 'necklace men' as well, and those were the first few I came across which looked kinda nice in my opinion.

hah, I guess I need to pay more attention to detail! I think I got worse at stuff like that post-t  :-\

Still, if anyone spots anything or thinks of another good place to search I would love to hear it. I need a bit of retail therapy. The whole gay marriage debate has been getting me down lately.

If you literally just want a pendant on a leather cord you could try, instead of searching for necklaces, for particular charms to string on it. Good luck charms from various cultures are always really intresting.

Like the Hand of Fatima: http://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/hand-of-fatima-pendant (http://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/hand-of-fatima-pendant)
I have several of these from various places.
This one's quite neat and un-feminine - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hamsa-Hand-of-Fatima-Protection-Pendant-Amulet-NEW-37mm-on-36-cord-necklace-/170925916929 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hamsa-Hand-of-Fatima-Protection-Pendant-Amulet-NEW-37mm-on-36-cord-necklace-/170925916929)

Or the nazar: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazar_%28amulet%29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazar_%28amulet%29)

Or a Saint Christopher coin thing, which supposedly protects travellers:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/b?ie=UTF8&node=197390031 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/b?ie=UTF8&node=197390031)

I also found this place as I was searching. Some of them are kind of cool looking,
http://www.calastrology.com/good-luck-charms.html (http://www.calastrology.com/good-luck-charms.html)

I don't really know what your tastes are like though, this is just the sort of thing I would look for. Anyway, I wish you luck on your search! Make sure to show us when you find one!

Bolo ties-- some of these can get expensive with semi-precious stones and so on. I looked at some earlier this week.

I have a something like what you're looking for, a black adjustable cord necklace with a piece of silver metal with the elder futhark rune Uruz carved/marked on it. I got it from one of those tacky giftshops you get wherever there are tourists, at Gulfoss whilst I was on holiday in Iceland (if anyone happens to be there definitely have the lamb soup). I was actually looking for one with a vegvĂsir, but it seems no where else them, and the meaning of Uruz (strength, both physical and mental) works just as well for me.

Try looking up for symbols or decorations you want first, then for something with it on. It'd be easier to find things on esty that way. I wish I could buy stuff off esty but shipping to the UK is always a sting in the pocket.

hippy shops?

Make your own? (find a micheals or a joanns... you can get all you need for under 10)  I made a sweet necklace out of a tiger's eye stone ring (~$5) a nut I had laying around, some wire, and a leather cord from a craft shop (~$2)  I just wired the nut into the center of the ring and connected tied the leather cord on.

go to any amusement park/shop on the boardwalk ect. and you'll find racks and racks of leather necklaces with pendents... usually completely unrelated to the attraction you're at... but hey, they're there.

FWIW the pendent I have on in my avatar is a Maori bone carving (Hei-Matau - stylised hook) - represents prosperity, abundance, fertility and strength. They are also seen as good luck charms, particularly for those traveling over water. Hei-Matau are symbols of power and authority which are held in great reverence by the Maori people.. My best mate's a Kiwi..it was a gift and I hardly ever take it off. I believe it came from http://boneart.co.nz/index.html (http://boneart.co.nz/index.html) :)

If you're at all crafty, you can go to craft stores and buy the leather cord and attachments. Then you could make several and make them as long as you want and then hold out until you find the perfect pendant.

Street fairs and that sort of thing is often a good place to come up on things. I got this super cool blown glass octopus that goes on a necklace at one. I'm also really big into semi-precious stones and their properties. You can get "points" of different stones that you like or have properties that you like that fit easily on those leather type necklaces. Some of them can get pretty fancy: http://www.etsy.com/listing/77165402/quartz-crystal-point-amulet-pendant-with?ref=sr_gallery_41&ga_search_query=tourmaline+point&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=all (http://www.etsy.com/listing/77165402/quartz-crystal-point-amulet-pendant-with?ref=sr_gallery_41&ga_search_query=tourmaline+point&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=all)

These are mine,

the top one is handmade, deer skin braided together and a vial of my blood for a pendant, changed the necklace many times, and the vial has broken twice lol, but I have worn a blood vial for many many years, feel incomplete without it, but maybe not the safest kinda thing, not everyones bag either.

The other was bought at a small shop, I love the whole horoscope thing, so its my sign.

I am crazy about pentant necklaces, i have another which is a longer one with a big heavy metal ring at the end.

I got that one in a small local shop, thats where I tend to find the coolest necklaces, maybe try earthbound?

Whoah, awesome necklaces Elijah! The blood vial is kinda awesome/badass in a slightly weird way, but I like it. How did you get the blood though? Just pinching a needle in your finger or something??

needle and a band aid lol, and yeah.. not the safest way to do it, so don't do it my way!

I used to cut, so I used to do it that way, cutting and sucking the blood up with an eye dropper from a medicine bottle. Don't recommend that either though hah.

I love necklaces! These are the two I wear most often (though I don't generally wear them together):

The beaded one I made myself; it's really easy to make aside from attaching the clasp, but even that's easy when you get the hang of it.

The W I bought at a bead store and added a jump ring myself so it would lie flat against my chest. It has 'wonderful' stamped under the W, but my webcam is so low-res.

All you blood fans-- recommend stage blood. A lot easier and safer and no risk for someone else.

Elijah and androgynoid - I like both of yours.

I don't think we have an earthbound in Australia though.

Fake blood kind of defeats the purpose of a blood vial. If you're HIV negative then what's the risk?

Well you don't TELL anybody it's stage blood. Haha but i suppose it defeats the macho thing of piercing your finger and getting blood out of it and putting it in a vial. If you are free of all blood born illness, not just HIV.   :)

I have one necklace that I've worn every day for the past 5 years. Well, actually, I've had to replace it twice, but always buy the exact same one. I feel vulnerable without it.

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1284.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa567%2Fjacesphotobucket%2Fnecklace_zps926aff60.jpg&hash=7f22cd7514346101081219b6a5f4c33d02d74277)

Dark leather band with two metal rings, it's perfect. It's from Abercrombie & Fitch but no one has to know that.

I decided to go with this. It's the Mayan Yin Yang. I'd like to get some thicker cord/leather for it though.
