So I've been working on my voice a lot lately, mainly in the car. I've found it seems easier to get the pitch set in my brain if I sing, so I've been singing along to some high tenor / low alto songs. I thought I was doing great... until I got recording software on the computer and did a bit of speaking and singing then listened to what came back.
My pitch sounds great. It's actually about an octave higher than I thought I could hit so I guess all those years in chorus paid off, but that's not the problem. I think resonance might be the problem. Even though the pitch is in the correct range, it still sounds like a male voice just at a higher pitch. Like it's starting from my chest. I feel it in the top of my vocal chords though, so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I also have a hard time getting the sound out. There's about a second of breathiness that happens before any sound leaves my mouth and I can't seem to get rid of that either. Any tips?
I'm not the best to ask, but if you are an octave above where you thought, it could be more strain than resonance that you're hearing idk, though it does sound like resonance from how you describe it. It would prob help to hear a sample so people other than me that actually know things could judge. Maybe try dropping the pitch a lil bit and see how that sounds?
I find there is pitch, there is resonance, there is inflection, then there are some super subtle more qualitative aspects that need to be right that I haven't really figured out yet.

Jen's right. Post a recording because your voice will always sound funny or not quite right to you. You can also keep recording yourself and trying different techniques instead of focusing on one and find the right pitch, rythem and so on.
Ok. How do I post a recording? Can it be uploaded to the forum or do I have to go to a third party location?
I can do it later or tomorrow. I'm 20 minutes late for a happy hour right now and I'm NEVER late!
Emily Elizabeth, use one of the free audio recording utilities, like SoundCloud or Vocaroo, and make a recording. Make the privacy setting, if any, "public" and post the link here. I suggest you use the "Does My Voice Pass" topic, stickied at the top of the page.
If you use soundcloud you can actually set it to private if you want to. You just have to make sure you post the "secret" link which you can get by clicking on the "share" button to make sure other people can listen if they click that link.
I have the same problem by the way. Feels like the voice is coming from my throat around the top somewhere, pitch is NP 220hz is easy but it just doesn't sound right. I feel like I am banging my head against a wall. I am sure I will figure it out eventually though, just gotta keep trying!
Have you checked out the CANDIFLA videos on youtube? They really helped me.
