Title: Changing Birth Certificate from Another State
Post by: KamTheMan on June 25, 2013, 04:21:45 AM
Hey guys, I can't seem to find the right google search terms for this topic, or I'm just more confused about the laws than I thought. So I live in California, have for practically 12 years now, and I'm a ways away from changing my birth certificate info, but I'm wondering how it works when you live in one state but were born in another. Like I was born in New Jersey, so how would I go about changing my NJ birth certificate from where I am in CA? Or is it not as complicated as I thought?

Since New Jersey does not require a court order for the gender change the procedure shouldn't be any different than if you lived in the state (by submitting your name change order and whatever letters are required to change the gender designation). It's the states that require an official decree to change your gender that can be a bit tricky if you don't live there (if your home state doesn't have a procedure for obtaining such a court order, or if the requirements for the order vary between the two states).

Thank you for the info! I guess first I would apply for a name and gender change on my license here in California.

get the name change in CA and then you can send all the stuff for the birth certificate change in the mail most likely

I'd go on your birth state's website for the Department of Vital Records/whoever is in charge of birth/death/marriage certificates etc and look at their policies for updating/amending info. If you don't see it, you can also try calling or emailing them with your questions. There's usually a fee involved for services like that so I would also double check to see what forms of payment are accepted and to make sure they haven't changed any policies whenever you're ready to get it changed.
