Title: Slight receding hairline panic: what to use?
Post by: Nero on July 04, 2013, 09:02:31 AM
*Putting this here but everyone's welcome to advise*

Okay, my hairdresser says I have *slight* receding. Said something about biotin? or something sounding like that. Anyway, it doesn't look bad yet but I'm not too keen to let this keep slipping.

Apparently rogaine isn't for receding. Is that true? What should I use? I heard of saw palmetto oil. That or finasteride? Will it mess with my testosterone? Not that I care much as all changes have long happened and I'm much more concerned with my hairline atm.

I want to prevent it getting any worse and also it would be great if there's a way to reverse it at all.
Thanks for any help.

I can only speak for me but I've used both minoxidil and finasteride/propecia for my receding hairline and it has been working great, its really been regrowing back my lost hair. Just give it a shot it couldn't hurt.

Hmmm, receding hairline......most middle-aged guys try a Corvette and a nineteen year old girlfriend!

Or you could embrace the coming of middle age as a sign of wisdom and distinction. Own your hairline and display it proudly.

(Though take my suggestion with a grain of salt, since I'm so self-conscious of my hairline that I literally will not leave the house without a wig or a hat. Of course, I'm a girl so it's way worse for me.)

Propecia or Proscar are a pretty sure thing, I used to take it(ie.just check for side effects), for a receding hairline, worked pretty good, until I went off of it, I lost hair by the handful, hated it with a passion, that was several years ago, not that I'm bald or anything yet :P

A trans friend is actually taking finasteride in combination with his T and is having no sort of reversal of the masculinisation effects, only a more solid hairline again, so it does seem to work... Obviously, as always with hormones, YMMV though.

I started taking vitamins. Try a regular multi vitamin and a hair/nails/skin formula one. Sometimes hair loss is inevitable.

Finasteride and Dutasteride are synthesized from Progesterone.

You might try this instead:

I would be careful taking finasteride.  This medication is known to have quite a few nasty side effects.  I do know there is quite the online debate over possible neurological side effects.  How much of that is substantiated by actual research I do not know, but there does appear to be evidence that finasteride can cause depression and anxiety.  Of course, there are also sexual side effects as well.  I guess only you can decide whether the potential risk is worth the benefit.

While on finasteride, I did have a major anxiety attack.  However, correlation does not imply causation, so other factors may have caused my anxiety.  I just thought I would mention it in case you were not aware.

Try a razor. Bald guys are hot.

Additionally, things like finasteride are sometimes prescribed to MTFs as they help act as testosterone blockers. So. you probably want to stay away from those.

I was worried about balding. My hairline had been receding a bit, but I really couldn't tell whether I was truly balding. I liked my receded hairline because it made me look masculine, but I didn't want it to recede too much! So I was on T for about 16 months and then started finasteride. I was on F for a total of two years (stopped briefly to donate blood) but haven't taken it since November.

So...I didn't really see any appreciable difference when I compared before finasteride, during, and after. My hairline might have gone back a little since I stopped, but I figure that if I can't tell, what difference does it make?

I continued to masculinize while on F, but I didn't realize that the effects had slowed down, and I didn't notice the sexual side effects because I thought I was finally getting a handle on my sex drive and all of that. I was, but only to an extent.

A lot of guys don't care whether the masculinization process slows down after a certain point. I actually do, so I'm glad I'm off finasteride; shortly after I stopped, I noticed that my facial hair was becoming thicker and coarser, and my body hair was coming in more rapidly. And I do wish my sex drive were a little less now, but I have it under relatively good control most of the time. So losing some drive wasn't a real problem. BUT there was also some sexual dysfunction that I didn't realize until after I went off the F. My erections were very much affected, and my orgasms weren't as intense.

I wrote a post about all of this a couple of months ago. You might hunt it up. But I don't know the answers to some of your questions. Topical Rogaine is not for receding hairlines, that I know. Oral finasteride...I'm not sure.

P.S. I did try saw palmetto tablets, but they did nothing for me. On the other hand, the finasteride doesn't seem to have helped my hair, either.

Finasteride scares me personally. I had heard of shrinkage for cis males or permanent sexual side effects. Not sure if that is a possibility for us because I doubt they have studied it but I'm not taking any chances. "That" is my favorite piece and he's not getting abused on my accord, lol.

Mine is receding and starting to thin. I just keep it buzzed down to a #1 guard with the ol' clippers now. For some reason the thinness isn't noticeable when it's super short. Good luck with however you choose to handle it yourself.

You just need to be careful with the make-up and no one will notice

Oral finasteride plus topical lattisse along the frontal margins...guarantied to work in 2-3 months

Latisse is that glaucoma med that was discovered to have dramatic effects on eyelashes...but it hasn't been approved for scalp hair (yet). Worth looking into, I suppose, but I'd be nervous of side effects. Finasteride can have some as well, but it's been studied for hair growth doses and all of that. Has the combination been researched at all?

I said guarantied because it worked on me. Yes, Lattise is for glaucoma or for eyelashes but what you know I grew hair where no hair existed before...true it is a fine hair but who cares...and yes, this is not scientific but  anecdotal, and more important...IT IS NO A MEDICAL ADVICE....consult with your physician before using any drug

Finasteride blocks the conversion of DHT from T and thus can have a "containment" effect on male pattern baldness depending on your genetic background

If you are using Rogaine, it's useless, unless you are an MTF on hormones or are using low T and it takes 3-4 months to have any kind of visible effect.

On a side note, if you are looking for more facial and body hair you could let yourself get careless while applying it. :)
