Hello Guys & Gals I was wondering how exactly each of you chose your name and why you chose to call yourself that?
I am still trying to find a name that will fit me and my personality....... ???

Just chose male version of my former name. I was close to my parents and wanted to respect their choice of name for me. I know some people have chosen the name they would've had at birth if they'd been born correctly, but my parents had chosen Howard and I couldn't quite bear to do that to myself.

My parens have never really told me what my name would have been if I was born correctly... I actually quite like Howard..... umm....... I am just having a bit of trouble I guess... And the name I bear now "laura" isn't really similar to any male names..... well at least I dont think so anyhow.....

We were laying in bed one night and my spouse rolled over and said..."You are Lori" I had been using another femme name and she didn't much care for it. I could care less either way. Lori is better than the name on my birth certificate.
If you are having an issue with finding a name, find out what the most popular names were during the year of your birth and choose one from that list. At least your name will be suitable for your age.

I went by a few other names, before deciding to do exactly that. I was to be named for my great uncle Nick. I feel that the name is rightfully mine and always has been. Don't know how well it fits my personality, though, but I'm sure I'll grow into it.

This is a very important point. Too often I see transguys with names only a 5 year old would have. I realize the name might be trendy or whatever, but it'll raise eyebrows. If you have a name that doesn't seem to line up with your age, it may give the impression of a name change. So a name you could've realistically been born with is a wiser choice.
But, in the end, it's your name, you're the one who's going to answer to it for the rest of your life, so pick something you like or has meaning to you. :)

Laurence is alright never thought of that name... I will probebly do what Lori said about looking for a name that is sutiable with my age...
I think you really just have to go through as many names as possible, narrow them down, and try them out. In the beginning, I thought I should have a name close to my birth name, and I used Rafe for awhile, but it just didn't seem to fit. I had always intended Dean to be my middle name, and my wife one day told me, "I like the name Dean. I'm going to call you Dean." I realized I had really only picked the other name because I mistakenly thought I owed my parents something; however, my folks will always call me by my birth name. So I went back through all the old names and settled on Sebastien Dean... I think it sounds good together, and I just go by Dean or DeanO. It seems to work.

Personally I absolutely wanted to keep my original initials, out of respect to my parents and also so I didn't have to reinvent my signature.
And then it was just a case of listing all the possible combinations that appealed to me (I did this one evening with a nice bottle of wine and a good friend...) and finally going with one I felt comfortable with.
I think the fact that my first and middle names start with the same letter as they did originally probably helped my family and close friends make the name transition, though I can't know that for sure.

I have a great many names depending on my activity. Seems to go with my slightly fantasist nature and I generally like names, Pica Pica is more a mission statement than a name. I tend to write under the names, Rose and Lilly Morgan.
Welcome- I did the following to figure out my name. My initials were MMM and I thought that was cool so I wanted to keep it the same. Since my given namse was Michelle, Micheal seemed like an easy one except its my brothers name.. So I went to a baby naming site and looked at male names that started with M and decided Myles fit well for me.
So check out baby naming sites and see what leaps out at you.

I've had Hell over deciding on a name. It's harder than you think if you're anything as indecisive as I am. I think I made it harder for myself because I settled on 'Sean' but my mother put me off it. Ever since I've gone through various names from Jack to Alex but never really felt I suited those. In the end, I went with my original choice.
I think choosing a name similar to your birth name is fair, but I can't help it, it just reminds me of Jerry Springer, "And here's Josephine, who used to be Joseph." I suppose it's a personal preference. I guess the advantage would be it may be easier for family and friends to catch on to.
If you chose a whole other name however, search a database of names as Lori suggested. Websearch and find names that were suited for your birth year. We see too many Zane Kyle Caleb McGhees around and it just sounds peculiar.

If I'd chosen a name from my birth year in Quebec (Francophone name), it would have been a incredibly boring name that I would share a female saint's name with 10% of the population born that year. That's how "imaginative" people were around here.
Many of the "new" names are in fact just old names that just gotten more popular. Keira's, in its irish original variant (Ciara pronounced Keira in british english) has been around for a very long time.
It has been somewhat popular in Britain for the last 30 years, but only made its way to America in a bigger numbers in the last 10. In the last 5, its even more popular with Keira Knightley popularising the name (that's where I got it from).
I don't know, if your choosing your own name, why not choose something original, something that resounds in you. I doubt a "new" name will out you as a TS.

I've got to admit I had trouble finding a name that suited me, My birth name begings with an S but the name that I choose is one that I think discribes my personality. I decided on this after some one called it me by mistake, it took me by supprize but I really liked that name.
If I'dve done the male version of my girl name i would have ended up with Keiran or something *shudder* my friend was going though a list of names with me that could be uni-sex since i will be going to college with the name. She went through a lot of them before suggesting Nick (which i guess could be percieved as Nicola.. a bit anyway but not enough to actually bother me) and it fitted, it was one of those 'sand it just clicked it me moments)

I picked out a few names. One of them, which I was starting to go by, was nixed by a then close friend of mine who detested the name. She had been a model and was helping me with things like makeup and making use of my limited wardrobe so I took her criticism to heart. On a road trip I started going through the names I liked and then started pairing them up with other names. I said each combo out loud until I hit on one that flowed well and I liked. I avoided names of close family members in order to steer clear of any possible problems.
Well...my mom named me Jessica....hmmm..never did fit. I wont even go into what my mom picked for a middle name for me. Anyway...I stuck with Jesse and then for my middle name.....I took my fathers deceased middle name....Mathias Joseph...yeah he had the two....so yeah that is what I chose for my name...plus people call me Jess or Jesse so I think it is easier for transition for family and friends...plus Jesse just suits me. Ok...well I am off...hopefully by next week I can post that my name was changed.

I have a gender neutral name, which pisses me off. Has created much confusion. So now i think i'm gonna change my name... i think it is an important step. I would like to just go by H.T. but I don't think anyone else is called that. Then I would have to explain what it means. It means nothing but H.T.
I think that I have actually decided on Jaston Euan Johnston
I am half Scottish so a schottish name Euan was best for me.
My best mate Dinah Chose Jaston for me however she doesn't know I am changing! He He!
However I will see how that suits me for now and if I actually get on with it then I will change everything.
I guess it sounds abit wierd and they will not be my same initials as mine now are LEJ and this will change them to JEJ.

I obtained a nickname when i first started college and met a real nice bunch of friends. Funny thing is when we mat we were all female and about four of us came out of the first term with male nicknames. Reason behind it all was that we nicknamed each other after our male idols. So Jon kind of stuck with me and it actually got to a point where people would be calling me by my birth name and i wasn't responding :-\ lol So by the time it came to deciding my name, everyone knew me as Jonathan, so thats who i am :laugh:

It *was* Joanthan Davis (lead singer of Korn)... but times changed and his music now sucks in my opinion lol

I was thinking of random names. I liked matt..my mom would've named me lance..my father's name was mike and middle name was andrew. I finally agreed that we'd change it to Matthew or Mathias Lance ...or Matthew/Mathias Andrew.
I'm trying to find a name that is gender neutral but can be masculinized when I get older, and so it will be easier for my family to get use to. Right now I've got Charlie(Chuck/Charles), Caleb, Billy(William) and Jamie(James). Dylan Thomas is in the running too, because that's what my mom would have chosen.
Charlie sounds the most like my birth day, but I'm really leaning towards Caleb. My mom actually called me Caleb once today, lol, it was cool. And with Caleb James, I'd even get to keep my initials. =P
