Title: Knights of Pen and Paper +1
Post by: Lesley_Roberta on August 07, 2013, 10:01:20 AM
This graphically intentionally ancient looking game is currently making me suddenly realize what is wrong with all the games on the market today.

THEY are all too full of themselves and they have forgotten why the gaming industry even exists today.

This game (I have it on my Android devices) is likely the most fun looking game I have played since the original Civilization and the first incarnation of Heroes of Might and Magic.

I am old enough (sadly) to recall when a board game wargame looked like Tactics II and when Squad Leader was the ultimate expression of wargaming. When AD&D was something called just that, and not 1st edition soon to be too many editions.

Today, our games are too complicated for their own good, the graphics are full of ->-bleeped-<- pretenses pretending to be movies. They have steep learning curves and utterly bull filled cheat codes all because they can't be mastered by the lazy.

Knights of Pen and Paper +1 is a new way of enjoying an old game, in the same way it was when it was still a new game.
And as I have played the old way when it was new, and most of the supposedly new games that pretend to be so great, I am here to say, this new old style game is more fun.

I have the MMO Guild Wars 2, and I hardly play it. Solo is it simply no fun. Solo the challenges are too hard. Grinding through levels is not why I started playing AD&D as well. I played it to eat pizza, drink pop, roll funny shaped dice and pretend I was this guy on a piece of paper. And to enjoy being with friends all who were busy being goofy.

You know, I have actually listened to MMO gamers talk of needing to do a raid like they were going in to work. They are doing it wrong.

I own Warhammer Fantasy Role Playing 2nd edition, and while it is a neat design, it is just to much to read.
I have played 4th edition D&D and it is just too much work to make a player. Too many choices not enough fun.
I have seen scores of designs, and none of them as simple plain silly fun as Knights of Pen and Paper +1

My son scoffs at the idea MMOs could not be as good, hehe, he wasn't even breathing when gaming was born though.

I'm ditching all the starts, all the efforts to make the perfect RPG design, I am going to emulate this design as a table top experience.

It's easy to find this Google is your friend.

Just adding a further endorsement.

Liked it so much this morning, I bought the PC edition, which I have enjoyed all afternoon so much I bought it for a friend (as payback for him buying me games he had liked so much he wanted me to have a copy as well).

The game is available through Steam, so it is both an easy purchase as well as a simple gift too.
