Title: Anyone have experience with testosterone and adhd?
Post by: genderqueer boi on August 12, 2013, 05:41:55 PM
Hi!

I got the ok from my therapist for T! She's a gender specialist, so I was lucky, but it is also strongly suspected I have ADHD. I am currently waiting on assessment for adhd. I think in about a month I will be properly diagnosed w/medication.

Does anyone have any experience with these combinations?

I'm having major problems with procrastination, impulsivity and disorganization. I am genderqueer, and while I strongly desire T, I could wait if it meant adhd symptoms would get wildly worse. I don't know if it's a good idea to introduce two major new changes to my body at once? I think in a lot of ways, T could help, but I could use hearing about real life experiences!

Thank you!

With peace,
Spencer

ADD and ADHD run in my family. I think I definitely have one or the other but I  haven't gotten evaluated. I've been on T for 2 years now and I still haven't taken care of the ADD/ADHD problem I think I have. My symptoms didn't get worse once I was on T. I actually think it helped them more because it became one less distraction in my life and I became focused on my transition and school more than anything. Sometimes it kicks in now but I'm visiting my doctor this week and I'm going to see what they say. I just wouldn't ever sacrifice T in order to take care of my ADD or ADHD, just my personal decision.

I was diagnosed as a kid and re-diagnosed as an adult that I have ADD. I currently do not take medication for it but I really should. I'm all over the map when it comes to my symptoms and it does make life difficult.

However, I haven't noticed any difference while taking T. Nothing has gotten worse or better as far as ADD goes.

hmmm

Well maybe get a good year into T and then start the meds?  Look at it this way though, lots of adolescent males get prescribed all sorts of things while T is getting introduced into their systems.  Lots of fully grown men also take adhd meds.  T + ritilin or adderall does not = death.

I got diagnosed EARLY like before i can even remember early (dad used to be a shrink, and he has ADHD...) I agree with RandomRoads that I can't say I noticed more/less focus after T.  Just different distractions =p  (no longer distracted over my boobs [they're gone] or the rest of that nonsense, more distracted by girls and all of that nonsense)

I'm not on meds... well I rarely take them that is.  I kinda went a little heavy on them for a couple years and now I'm just over them.

Meds also aren't always the answer.  If you're worried about them why not try other techniques for railing in the symptoms (exercise, diet ect... not sure if they work, but there is plenty of info out there).
