Title: First Shot Questions
Post by: thatboyfresh on August 16, 2013, 03:18:30 AM
Hey,

Shawn Here
22 years old and 7/8ths
Pre-t

My first shot is coming up fast.  Aug 26th to be exact!  I am super beyond excited. Even more then for the release of GTA 5 and PS4 combined. I have been waiting for so long and it's finally happening. I have a few questions peeps more experienced with T, specifically injections.

1. Do you do your own shots or someone else for you?
2. How did you feel after your very first shot?
3. What is your injection sched? ( Mine will be bi-weekly to start but I heard some guys really don't like this)
4. What was the first change you noticed.

Thank you to who ever answers in advanced!.

P.S This site is really awesome!

Congrats!  That's really awesome.  Just remember not to focus too much on scrutinising yourself for changes - it's easy and tempting to think that just because some guys get changes after a few weeks that you will, too.  Don't judge your progress on others'.

1.  My wife does my injections for me.  She's a vet nurse, so it doesn't bother her.  I'm too squeamish to do my own.
2.  I didn't feel anything, honestly.  Just elation and euphoria.  Not dizzy or anything else.  For the first few days I had hot flashes, but that's about it.
3.  My injections are every 18 to 21 days.
4.  Darkening of facial hair.  My changes weren't wholly noticeable until after 3 months - and even then, it wasn't until 5 months that I started getting tiny bits of whiskers under my chin.  Voice started to drop after 3 months, "shark week" stopped at about month 3, too.

Congrats with soon being on T. It certainly is an exciting time! And yay, GTA 5! If only I had money...

As for your questions. Note, I got my first shot after 8 weeks of Androgel, so my body was more prepared for them.

1. I let them do at the hospital. I am a whimp.
2. I didn't really feel much different, apart from happiness to finally be on shots.
3. My injections are bi-weekly.
4. The first thing I felt from starting T (so Androgel) was a sensitive downstairs because it grew.

Good luck on the 26th!

I self inject biweekly. The first shot was a relief. Voice change started after about 2 weeks.

Welcome to club.

1. Both. I prefer my glute for IM site so need someone else do it (I just can't twist myself to aspirate and actually be able to see if there's blood or not). But I can do it myself in the quad (vastus lateralis)... I just don't like it because I can feel it all much more there and sometimes the benzyl alcohol in the T likes to travel down more towards my knee which isn't very comfortable; not painful just not ideal).

2. I didn't really feel it in-full until around the third day. I don't even have words; you'll see soon.

3. Fortnightly, but I would like to switch to weekly. I can feel it really dropping off throughout the second week (I seem to be a 'hyper excreter') and I'd prefer to feel like the first week all of the time (weekly results in more stable levels than fortnightly... there's two little arcs on a graph of T-level weekly but just one high to low arc in the fortnightly graphs. Weekly is more stable because it keeps the level more straight-lined than high to low). Its different for everyone based on how they FEEL but weekly would be my preference (even despite the more pokes of the needles; it would be worth it for me and I am going to discuss that with my doctor and potentially trying the subcutaneous injection protocol so I can do it myself all of the time and not have to use my quad or worry about poking things I don't want to be poking... it happens with IM lol).

4. My voice. My singing voice was totally uncontrollable (and still is) not even a week later. I noticed loss of my formerly typical range literally the next morning but my voice overall did not get totally uncontrollable until around 2-3 months. It's still not 'leveling out' eleven months later so prepare for that possibility.

Congrats with starting T soon.  :)

1.Do you do your own shots or someone else for you? A nurse gives me mine.
2. How did you feel after your very first shot? Tired.
3. What is your injection sched? Every other week. I prefer this to weekly shots b/c I hate getting my shots.
4. What was the first change you noticed. Probably hair.

Congrats on starting T :)

1. My roommate gave me the shots who is a nurse.
2. I was so relieved that after months of not sleeping enough I slept more than 12 hours. I smiled like an idiot for days.
3. Bi weekly but soon it's gonna be every 3 months.
4. Downstairs growth/crazy sex drive.

Wow,

Thanks for all the great responses!!. I really appreciate it. I know every single guy is different and I wont know until I am actually taking the shots but these personal accounts ease my worries a lot. Except the shots themselves. My doctor is far away from where I live so driving to see them every 1-2 weeks is kind of a burden monetarily wise so I will either have to do them my self or get my gf to!. I know its probably not as bad as it seems.

Thanks again yo!

1.  I do my shots ... my wife is a nurse and taught me how but I give them to myself

2.  I was tired when I first started T ... doc told me to expect it since I would be going through puberty again

3.  I take my shot weekly

4.  The first thing I noticed was my body scent changed & growth below

1. I do them myself. Always have. I used to do IM shots now I do SubQ and love it!
2. I felt no difference after the FIRST shot.
3. Every week.
4. Hair on my arms and face, deeper voice and growth downstairs.

1) I do my own shots into lateral thigh muscle. I feel nothing when I do them so why waste time with clinic appointments? Lol.

2) Anything after first shot is more psychological but I did notice more energy (I work out a lot and noticed I could work a little harder that next week).

3) Bi-weekly

4) Voice and darker facial hair. Already had hair but it's getting much darker.

Congrats. ;D

I started out on gel, but I ended up going a couple weeks without T before starting injections so I remember how starting both felt really well lol.

My nurse does my shots. I did my own for the first...20 weeks? But one time, I hit a vein and I just broke down because it was dysphoria inducing enough as it is. For the next couple shots I kept doing my own, but I would sit staring at my leg for up to two hours before finding the guts.  So I went to my practitioner and now the nurse has done my shots. It hurts much less in the butt than in the thigh. If you are able to find a place that does the shots, I really highly suggest it. It does help to know how to do it on your own if you one day have to, but I find it's so much less hassle and I don't need to keep needles in my bathroom anymore.

After starting the gel I didn't notice much - I felt better pretty quickly, after a few weeks, and my periods became irregular, but the physical changes were few and far between. I started shots at 9 months on T, and there was an adjustment period. I felt moody, especially before the shot time, but that only lasted about 6 weeks or so. Now, I feel a lot better and it's no big deal where in my "cycle" I am.

I get my shot every two weeks.

My first changes on T were irregular periods, stomach hair, and greasier skin. That was on the gel - and as I said, I personally didn't have a lot of luck with it. When I switched to shots my voice dropped really quickly, and the body hair EXPLODED, lol, but I think that may have been the time it would have happened regardless of whether I was on gel or shots.

You are the second to mention "Sub Q" is it an easier way to take the shot? And do you get the same amount of effect compared to going into the muscle?

Also, without getting too personal. Did you find it was uncomfortable to wear tight fitting underwear after genital growth? I love my tighty whities lol

I am praying that my voice will just drop a register and i will still be able to sing lol. Is it common for people who were "okay" singers before to magically not be able to follow pitch? What factor decides how low your voice will actually drop if any?

I think genetics are a good clue. When I'm on the phone now people keep telling me I sound just like my brother.

Yeah,

Also I guess the tone of your voice now would play a role in it too. I don't get misgendered on the phone anymore so anything lower then what I have right now would be gravy! I mostly sound like a teenaged boy ( or so the jerks on COD tell me)

Congrats, dude!

1. I do my own shots, because I would rather have control of the needle entering my body-- it makes me more nervous when other people are doing it.

2. I felt excited! ...and hungry. My energy/appetite/sex drive skyrocketed after I started T initially (in gel form) and after I switched to injections about a year later.

3. I do my injections weekly-- every Tuesday, to be precise, because it's easy to remember that Tuesday is T-day. Okay, maybe also because that's when my doctor could schedule an appointment for my first shot. Details schmetails.

4. My first change on T in general (like I said, I started on gel and switched to injections about a year later) was downstairs growth, I think-- I had noticeable growth within a couple weeks, even on the gel. Once I switched to injections, the first new change I noticed was my voice cracking all over the place.

You said you used the gel first. How much gel do you have to apply to be properly absorbed. Why did you end up switching to shots?

The dosage varies from person to person and we can't discuss specific doses on the forums, but I had little packets of gel that I could open up and smear on every day (and later, a small tub of cream and a tiny spoon, because I switched insurance and had to switch to cream in the process). With both, it was roughly enough to cover my upper thighs. The gel absorbed a little better than the cream, both in terms of producing changes and in terms of not leaving gross residue on my skin. My changes on the gel were slow, but on the cream they were virtually nonexistent.

Honestly, I had originally planned on starting out with injectable in the first place, but my doctor wanted to try me on topical first and I figured I'd give it a trial run. I ended up switching to injectable because the gel/cream just wasn't working for me. I barely had any canges after a little over a year (I still had a menstrual cycle after a year, which baffled even my doctor), and I was worried about getting testosterone all over my female partner while snuggling. Plus, injectable T is less expensive.

SubQ is easier in my opinion. Its a smaller needle that goes into the stomach right underneath the skin. It's less painful, easier and you're less likely to hit veins and stuff. I like it. I know it's not for everyone.

As for the growth, it's only uncomfortable and even noticeable (for me) is if it's hard. So, I think briefs are fine. I have a few pairs myself.

I don't understand how people can always let someone else do their shots.  You're always relying on someone else that way.  If you really want it, I figure you should be able to do your own shots.

Just my opinion.

The same reason people get others to rip off a stuck on bandaid. I respect your opinion but, I think it's just a matter of preference. I have never been able to purposely cause my self pain ( even for my own benefit) it's a mental thing.

Also for some it might be a psychical thing. Me for example are not thin enough nor flexible enough to be able to safely inject into my own butt. I know there is other places to inject but I should be aloud to chose the injection site of my liking. Or if there is some other factor limiting someones ability to self inject. I don't think it is fair of you to insinuate that someone who rely on someone else to inject them is "not really wanting it"

I think it's a good idea for people to know how to do their own shots, just incase,  but if someone finds it easier/the only way they can cope with needles and accepts the risk that there might not always be someone around who can do it then it's up to them.  The likelihood is that they know the theory at least, so if push came to shove they would be able to inject themselves if there was no one around for weeks, which is unlikely unless there's an apocalypse when, frankly, it'd be the least of your worries.

Here in the UK the only two types of T that are normally prescribed is topical gel, or Nebido injections which are always given by a doctor.  Does that mean that everyone in the UK doesn't really want it?  Nope.

About SubQ shots - the person prescribing me T said, "Grab a roll of fat on your tummy and stick it in." That's it.

Now, IM shots - I would have to do some serious soul searching every week I had to jam that needle in my leg.

1. Do you do your own shots or someone else for you?
I do my own.

2. How did you feel after your very first shot?
A bit surprised that that was all there was to it. Worried that I would hate being on T or that I would become an enraged gorilla. (Pft.)

3. What is your injection sched? ( Mine will be bi-weekly to start but I heard some guys really don't like this)
Once a week. I am looking into getting an implant, as now that the novelty has worn off I am as likely to forget my shot as I am my keys or the mail or someone's birthday.

4. What was the first change you noticed.
The first change I noticed I was not sure at the time was a change. I did my first shot with a doctor on the other end of the state and had a four-hour drive home, and I felt really, really chill. I wasn't sure if it was the relief of tension, or the T, but I know now that I get a good couple of hours of placid temperament after every shot. Also, I stank within 24 hours.

Don't forget if you're worried about pain that you can numb the area with ice first, and you can ask for thinner injection needles. No shame in that. The one they gave me to do my first shot with was like a 28g or something like that and it was AWESOME. I talked my current doctor into giving me 27s, and I find it is well worth the extra effort/time it takes to push the oil through the smaller needle. I do all of mine in the thigh, and the pain is fine with ice. It's not fun, but it's not traumatizing.

I think I am the only person I know who hates subQ. I had to do a couple of antibiotics shots subQ after my hysto, and they creeped the living f*** out of me. Don't know why.

You can draw through a larger needle and then switch it out before the shot.

Implant??

Also I have heard some guys have trouble with seepage. Would that be less likely to happen with a thinner needle or is that they are injecting incorrectly? What about numbing cream? Or is that a no no as with tattoos and the like.

P.S thanks everyone for sharing your knowledge!

If you do it in the lateral thigh, pinching the skin and muscle and pushing the needle slowly with your leg hanging off a counter or anywhere where your leg isn't touching the floor (so you can't tense the lateral muscle of your leg) it doesn't hurt. It's a much better site than the glute for not hurting. You need to stand to inject in the glute, there's easier nerves to hit there which hurt like heck and because you're standing, fear can make you tense up and that could hurt. I literally do not feel a thing when injecting myself in the lateral thigh. It's almost disconcerting to watch a needle go into your body and yet not feel it!

As for seepage, if you make sure to add a little air and flick the bubble to the top of the syringle at the plunger and push it out at the end of the injection, this will push the T further into the muscle, it's a conservation method and is safe. Then you leave the needle in for 60 seconds after injecting and then yank it out fast and put pressure on the site for 60 seconds. Don't rub the area at all! This can lead to T escaping the muscle, pain and bruising. Light pressure is all you need. And if you do that for 60 seconds, you won't even need a band aid!

Also, you can go to any clinic and have them do it. It doesn't have to be your own doctor or friend/partner. They can often teach you how to do it yourself too.

Yeah man. It is really helpful to see every ones different methods and how T effects people differently. Also to see the different options available and to know that what might work for some might not work for others. The response I've gotten is excellent!

Any walk in clinic should do it.

The only thing about clinics is them doing everything "right". Medically it will be right but in terms of T conservation and the least pain, likely not. They don't worry so much about conservation and may use same needle that they used to draw (the needle is dulled when pushed through vial), then not pinch leg and just fire it in. They'll also likely pull the needle out as soon as they've finished injecting.

Another conservation thing I forgot to mention was that after you draw to whatever dose you've to take, check you have enough and before switching needles pull the plunger back so that you get all the T that was in the needle. Basically, you want to be sure you get all the T. Again, if a clinic does switch the needle, they might kiss this step.

It's a good fall back though; if you chicken out, there's somewhere that'll do it for you.

Also, for remembering when to inject, google calender is awesome. I have it on my computer and phone and I set up on the computer so that I could put Shot L (left leg) to reoccur every 4 weeks and then Shot R to reoccur every 4 weeks inbetween (so they were 2 weeks apart). This way I can't forget as my phone and  computer remind me. It's also handy because remembering which leg isn't always so simple! Lol. It's best to alternate legs because scar tissue can build up if you only use one side and that will affect T uptake. I like this calender though because you can set any reoccurring period, so if switching to something more awkward to remember, like 10 days, it's simple enough to set up.

A slight correction, you do not have to stand to give yourself a shot in the tush.

I don't understand how people can always let someone else do their shots.  You're always relying on someone else that way.  If you really want it, I figure you should be able to do your own shots.

Just my opinion.

If you like and are able to do your own, more power to you. But there are people here with needle phobia and just don't like the process so much or whatever it is. They are just as much "men" as you are. Most shots people give themselves are not IM.

On another point, subQ seems only used in certain parts of the country. No one hear does it, AFAIK. I wouldn't mind doing this, I think. I don't think the person not liking subQ is the only one. I think the T itself is stingy and it's thick stuff.

This is something I will most likely have to do. I have a hard enough time remembering to grab my keys before I leave the house. Good idea for using your phone because lets face it. How many times do we actually look at a conventional calender these days. My GF is coming to the injection training with me so I can have an option rather then having to depend on a stranger who might do it incorrectly

I know how to and can do it if I need to.  I choose not to because I have someone willing to do them for me. *shrug*

If I relied on myself to do my shots, I would still be on gel-based T which is utterly terrible IMO.
If one really wants it, they can always find someone capable to do the shots for them.

1. Do you do your own shots or someone else for you?
My fiancé does 'em for me at the moment. I don't have a needle phobia nor am I afraid of pain, I just can't stand to look at the injection.

2. How did you feel after your very first shot?
Right afterwards, nothing special. The next day, my whole arm was useless (we tried to do the shots to the shoulder muscle at first, didn't work out at all).
Other than that, I was just happy I was finally off gel.

3. What is your injection sched?
The prescription says every 17-21 days, and in my case it's the minimum of 17 days. Any more and I get cranky like a bear that's been shot to its ass.

4. What was the first change you noticed?
Muscle growth (thank you, physical job) and libido going haywire.

Hey,

Shawn Here
22 years old and 7/8ths

1. I do my own injections, I'm too much of a control freak not to.
2. I think I was just nervous, not knowing what to expect. That and overwhelmingly excited since I'd finally reached the goal I'd wanted. As far as literally/physically feeling something different, I felt a little more energy but that could easily be from the nervousness and excitement :/
3. I do my injections weekly. My doctor tried to move it to every 10 days, but I kept forgetting since it wasn't as simple as "it's Thursday, can't forget my shot". (She wanted to move it to 10 days to see if it helped my anxiety, but it didn't.) So I started on every 7 days, moved to 10, back to 7. I seem to not have any problems if I'm doing it weekly.
4. I think the first things I noticed were wanting to bone everything and my chubby cheeks thinning out. Followed by my voice gradually dropping and more hair everywhere. I'm starting to be convinced I'm half monkey.

Hope those help

Yo thanks for the input man! I really hope I don't get that much more hair. I already have thick dark hair on every inch of me. Soon I might invest in a weed whacker or something. I am looking forward to a possible higher libido though. Did you find that it calmed down when you started regularly using T or that it is generally higher then before injections?

For your libido, did you find it leveled out and is back to "normal" ( meaning before T) or that it is generally higher then before.

Considering I didn't really have libido at all pre-T, it's definetly not back to normal. That's why any change to it was pretty major. :P
But it was actually quite nice change, ehehehe.

1. Do you do your own shots or someone else for you?
My girlfriend does my shots for me

2. How did you feel after your very first shot?
After my first shot I felt like I had more energy, but mostly I had a huge sense of calmness come over me like everything was finally going to be ok...and just extremely excited for everything in the future

3. What is your injection sched?
I get one shot every thursday, I like it doing it once a week because I feel like I don't have that "drop of T feeling" before my next shot, I feel like everything just flows so much better than what I have heard about doing it every two weeks

4. What was the first change you noticed?
I just started on the 8th of August but the first change I have noticed so far is my voice, its already in a range where I can at least pass for a 15 year old boy going through puberty rather than a women, my libido has increased slightly, my downstairs has already grown a little and I have gained 3 pounds of muscle from working out..when before T I couldn't gain anything at all (not even fat)

Yea, I noticed a lot of people opt for weekly doses if they can. I am trying 2 weeks to start and if I feel like it's starting to drop off at the end of the second week I can switch to shorter.

About SubQ shots - the person prescribing me T said, "Grab a roll of fat on your tummy and stick it in." That's it.

Now, IM shots - I would have to do some serious soul searching every week I had to jam that needle in my leg.

Many diabetics who are using insulin, self-inject.  Most of those these days use sub-cutaneous injection pens, with 5 to 8 mm, fine gauge needles.  So are on insulin pumps, that have a cannula that is occasionally replaced.

I feel ya! I already had a ridiculous amount of hair, I was growing a relatively good sized goatee before I started T. As for the libido, it's still pretty high, but I think it was probably higher in the beginning. One thing I will point out though, I'm not sure if this is T related or just me getting older, but my mindset in general has really changed over the last year that I've been on T. I've never had any sort of work ethic (hard to admit but sadly true), and now I'm working 12 days straight without complaining, and busting my balls every day to get stuff done. That, and I'm a lot less "sensitive" now. I can accept defeat, I can go without having a mental breakdown over things that upset me. That could be completely unrelated, but I've seemed to go from what seems like a 12 year old boy to a 25 year old man in the last year haha.
You probably weren't interested in that, but it just came to mind. #revelations

There's no major difference really.  Most don't jam an IM shot in when self injecting, that's far more likely to hurt or cause someone to chicken out.  You just pinch the skin but with muscle and then slowly push it.  So it's very similar, just going in a little less deep with subq.  I've done both before (during med school) and personally I find the IM injections the ones I can't even feel, but I definitely feel subq.  It's not painful per se but I do feel something.  Although it's worth noting that I have footballer thighs so that may make a difference lol.

QuoteYou can draw through a larger needle and then switch it out before the shot.

You're right. I should have clarified. I use a 19g drawing needle; there is significantly more resistance when injecting with the very small needles.

Hey guys,

I just got my first shot!!!! I'm so relived and excited and everything. Thanks every one for all your helpful comments and stuff. I'd have to say it didn't hurt at all. The first little pinch but then nothing felt after that!!. I got the nurse to do it but I've learned how to do is on my self as well as my girlfriend. I am so happy. I don't feel anything yet ( 1 hour) except excitement.

YAY

Hey,

So I had my first shot 3 days ago. And yesterday and this morning I had a horrible headache which has died down a bit but not gone . Is this typical? I cant see my doctor until the 9th ( my next dose) will taking some kind of advil help with this. Has anyone experienced headaches from T? I looked at information online and saw that some people did have this but was hoping to get some more personal insight thanks!

@AlexanderC THANKS!

Initial headaches can be caused by changes in your blood pressure, even fairly  minor changes. Check yours at one of those pharmacy ones.

Thanks for some info. But I don't take my blood pressure regularly ( a year ago maybe) so I wouldn't have anything to compare to but I will check to see if it's high.
