On Saturday, I was watching television, and there was a guy surrounded by starving children (I think it was Darfur, at least in the vicinity of that); he was trying to raise money to feed them. I stayed tuned, and the show was James Robison's, a guy I tend to mistrust, just from the usual sound of all that.
(NB: I grew up in the same home town of the PTL Club. To the chords of Louie Louie: Jim and Tammy - O-oh Baby, You Gotta Go)
I sure felt, though, that this effort was 100% sincere. If that's the way this religion works, I am all for it.
nota
When I was in seminary at Regent University (Pat Robison & that group) and James and Betty Robison were guesses at the university quite a bit and I got the impression that they are very sincere in their motives for the starving children of the world.
Now the PTL was very different thing altogether, the Bakker's where criminals.
Save the children, kill the adults.
It's sort of a god sanctioned retroactive abortion.
That's the way they come across to me.

One time a childhood bud o' mine and I got fairly high and sauntered into the PTL Club - round midnite, 1 am, on a Saturday nite - and pretended to be theology students, interested primarily in the Television Ministry aspect doncha know, so we could see how much equipment they got in there... they were real accomodating. Tammy, sho nuff, was in there, prolly cookin the books... she
Smiled, jes' as-big-as-you-please, and batted them extra-heavy-duty lashes...
For some reason, I never hated Tammy Faye. It bothered me when TV people would make fun of her make-up.
I wasn't a fan or anything. Back then my religion was Lucy in the Sky. I just felt bad the few times I saw her. Come to think about it, she may have been crying. Maybe I was a victim of this here "Compassion".
**** Required disclosure about me. I am a chump. I can be taken in by anybody and I often have been.
I felt sorry for 'em both, don't mean they ain't criminals.
I was just so surprised at the apparent sincerity of Mr Robison, viz a viz my own cynicism, I broke down and cried for quite a while. I hope I'm not being a chump, I REALLY DO.

The only way to know if you've joined the chump club is for you to research this dude and find out if he is legit. If it turns out that he is a true champion of the underprivileged, then you just may have discovered for yourself a hero or role model.
Already got One. Also known as The Many.
