Hey guys, so I graduated officially August 11th, had my ceremony in May, but had a couple more courses to finish up for the summer and then actually got my diploma a few days after August 11th. I have a BS degree in Biology, and have gotten quite a few job offers - offers to which I can't take because they're over 2 hours away minimum (some are out of state), I have no vehicle(had to sell it to pay for rent last summer) nor do I have any money to move. The only places that offer jobs that I have experience in are towards larger cities, and I live in a very rural town.
I literally have 6 dollars in my bank account right now, and maybe 2 bucks in change on my night stand. I'm broke. My roommate is great, and has paid the rent the last couple of months, and I'm trying to do odd jobs to help with bills and groceries.
I've been trying to get a job at a local eye center, because I thought having a part time job, and doing odd jobs could potentially allow me to save up money and move with my girlfriend when she starts med school in around 8 months, and take a better job once I move to a larger city. However, the hiring process has taken two months almost. I have had to deal with the GM being out sick more than once, my background check taking 2 weeks, and now she's out sick again - on medical leave - for two more weeks. So the earliest I can get that job is 2 weeks from now.
I have applied everywhere else, fast-food, retail, factories, etc.. no bites whatsoever.
To top it all off, I just ran out of testosterone. I couldn't even get a full dose. My girlfriend offered to pay for the Testosterone, so generally I would just call my doctor up to call in my script to my local pharmacy... I asked him in January when I went when he would like to see me again, he replied that a year would be fine. Great. Awesome news. When I called today, apparently new state requirements states that I must see him once every six months. It has been 8 months since I've seen him. I can't afford to go in for a check-up, let alone lab work! I really wish I would have been notified of this change prior to this point in time. I would have made an appointment and made sure I had the money to do so. I hate being blindsided, and I honestly have no idea what to do..
It's been 3 months of looking for a jobs. I have probably sent out over 95-100 applications with attached resumes. I have no idea what to do at this point. This is a small town and you can only get a job if you know someone, in fact, I only got this far into the hiring process at the eye center because my roommate works there part-time as one of his three jobs.
Anyone have any advice? I'm stressing out.
I'm sorry I have no advice, but I really hope things work out for you, and soon. It's great your roommate and girlfriend are helping out a little though.
I'm so sorry you find yourself in a bind. There really is nothing much we can tell you since you are literally doing everything you can. Maybe you can look for odd jobs on Craig's list. Or try selling something you really don't need at a pawn shop to get that extra money for T.
I am also from a small town and there are employment or temp agencies in the neighbouring larger cities which can help you find work. I don't know where you are, but you may need to seek advice from your nearest unemployment office.
One option for a little bit of money is to sell plasma. Some places are paying up around $25, but you'd have to check with your local donor place.
Yeah, I have sold all of my stuff already. The only things I have are some of my clothes and the TV that is in the living room - which I have to keep because my roommate and I agreed that one would purchase a TV and one would purchase the washer/dryer. So really it's both of ours while I live here.
And yeah I thought about donating plasma before.. the only donor place around here is apparently an hour and a half away, so I have to get someone to take me and to pay their gas back and forth would be about the same amount of cash as I'd receive donating lol
But I spoke with my dad - whom is super supportive of me and all that I do - and he offered to take me to the doctor and pay for my lab work. So atleast that's taken care of... now only to find a job... or find some money to move somewhere lol
Oh and I am going to some temp agencies next week. It's just that they're likely to find jobs for me elsewhere, which is the whole problem anyways. I can't really get a job HERE. In larger cities, I can get a job easily. I have a degree in Biology and loads of experience in aquatic ecology, as well as lab experience in medical and industrial fields.
Most larger cities have some manner of public transportation (buses, trains, etc.) - and as for not having money to move, there is possibly the option of crashing with a friend or relative or housing/apartments for low-income earners. Another possibility (don't know where you are located in the world) is seeing what options may be available for unemployed folk - as I said, there will some kind of unemployment or welfare agency near you. I'd at least speak to them.
