Title: Advice on hair cuts while growing hair out: androgynous to feminine
Post by: kilkan on September 15, 2013, 07:37:20 PM
Hi, I'm currently attempting to grow my hair out. I don't really know of any good androgynous that look good for all of those in between lengths. Any advice, or is the topic gone over thoroughly in another forum?

I would really like to know as well. I have an idea, but apparently I can't post pictures. Weird.

First find your facial shape.
This can be done with a quick google search.

Second search for cuts by using this format- length (short, medium, long) for (facial shape).
It'll bring up dozens of images of different cuts to sort through.

Once you see something that you like show you stylist what you are aiming for and they can help get you there. When I was a teenage boy I wanted a 90s grunge chin length hair cut that was very androgenious. So I showed the lady who cut my hair and she set me up to work towards that. It will be a little awkward at times but it is worth it :)

I've had very long hair before. Like pony tail down my back long. But it looked like crap. My hair is kind of a mess right now. I'm several weeks since my last cut and it will be a lot more before I can get in again. My roots will kill me.

But...this is my regular everyday hair. I have it shaped longer in the front and it tapers into the back. I find it very satisfying as a transitional style. I get to play with my hair a lot. I try to make it curly or see how it shapes from different sides or whatever. I can get 4 or 5 different looks out of it. Which is important because it lets me try different styles and play with my look. Seriously, messing with my hair style is pretty satisfying. I change it every day.

Anyway, the best advice i can give is: Go see a professional. My stylist costs a fortune, but I love her color work and she makes me feel like a freaking princess. I realize it's indulgent, but it's worth it. Also, get a hair iron and buy decent products (bedhead is great and you can find it at target).

In 2 hours I am going to see a trans-friendly hairdresser and I am going to get as much info out of him as I can :). At the moment I look as in my avi and I hope the outcome will worthy (see not scary enough) to post un update pic. Though currently, given the specificies of my work situation and me suddenly becoming a bit of representative persona, I will lean towards very andro, instead of andro/fem... But I will keep You all updated - if You wanna know of course!

Emily that's great! :)

Tiffany if that's your 12:30 hair then I'm seriously jealous. You look marvelous. ;)

Well, I will post pics in the evening (thats some 5-6 hours ahead). Dont expect much, because as my hairdresser said - what he saw was the wild process, not some kind of result :P. I learned a couple of things - I have very nice and healthy hair which is a big plus. But my hair is from that kind which grows, grows, grows and then curls up and for me that stage will never end. The only solution is to cut a little bit and let it grow out again until it stars curling. Again. Rinse and repeat :P. I suspect this might be a common issue among other girls as well.
So, actually atm I look more male than andro now (but not hopelesly male), but because of one trick I can play around with different styles leaning closer or farther away from andro :)

I've grown mine out several times and gone from very short to waist length. My best advise is to just not stress over growing out and just wait for it. Even if it does look a bit goofy to you for a few months, know that it will look great eventually when it's long. Put your mind on other things than your hair and the time will seem to pass more quickly. If anyone makes any sort of comment on your hair, don't respond. Never allow your personal grooming to become a topic of debate.

You can minimize grow out issues by using a styling product to smooth it back flat a lot. Many people wear things like headbands, hats and barrettes, too. The last time I did this and basically experienced no awkward period at all.

I'm in a similar boat.  I have yet to start HRT, but have been growing out my hair to mess around with appearance.  I have very thick black curly hair (My ethnicity is mostly Italian/Greek so the hair is everywhere too!) which although could look wonderful when long, it'll suck to take care of and at it'll fro out until it gets past shoulder length.

Also, Emily, the previous profile pictures were kinda further away from the camera so I don't have that great of a comparison, but even with that I see a lot of progress.  You do look very androgynous and I don't think it would take you much work to swing the bulk of the population over to gendering you as female and a pretty one at that.

And Tiffany, I think you look great in those pictures!

Tnx Murbella, but... It seems I only was able to pass because of my hair...

With my wild and savage hair (before fixing it...)

Afterwards, as things were sorted out today...

And if that was not convincing enough...
Total boy (but I have to admit, very pretty one... but still a boy).

And now I have absolutely no idea how I might look after the HRT. I am getting the idea that I will look exactly the same as I did, when I started. Phew.

P.S. I am not complaining about hairdresser - he did the best as he was asked, but with some of my hair gone, so have the tiny bits of my femininity :(

People may have a different experience, but from what I've lived... just don't get haircuts. Even when I told them I was trying to grow it out, most hairdressers "didn't have a choice" and just had to cut too much. Not to mention that half haircuts were just bad. Getting haircuts just prolonged the agony of having middle length weird hair. I know no way to grow hair out efficiently in an aesthetically pleasant way.

Once I accepted that I was gonna have ugly hair for a while and just threw it all in a pony tail when it got long enough, things went by really fast. But I was at least two years repeatedly ruining my growth with hairdressers before I finally got the resolve to accept the ugliness of my hair.

I grew mine out when I was 18 so i can't really remember It that much but it came down to 2 key factors.  Number 1, I didn't cut it at all for ages.

Number 2, and probably the most important... a hat :)

I am growing my hair out and is long enough to brush over my eyes on one side then put up with a barrette. If I don't wash and use lots of mousse in the morning, I have a giant fro that looks horrible. Think Napoleon Dynamite style fro, very bad. No haircuts is a good idea and slowly begin experimenting with styling once it gets long enough.

Growing it out just sucks!

It takes forever and that weird stage.. there's just not a lot to do for that ;_;
