Title: Disturbing Dream
Post by: Kristal on September 22, 2013, 05:41:23 AM
Holy ->-bleeped-<-... So, to give a little back story, I've been having hair cutting dreams ever since I started growing out my hair. In my dreams, it's always my mother who cuts my hair, usually when I'm asleep. She never actually cut my hair when I was asleep as a child, preferring to bribe or blackmail me into accepting the cut. We used to argue for hours about my hair. My childhood was filled with such wonderful phrases as "You look like a shaggy dog", "I want you to look presentable", and "Only girls have long hair, you don't want to be a girl, do you?" (I am not even kidding...)

Any way, in regards to my dreams, I just had my most disturbing hair dream yet. In the dream I wake up and go to the bathroom. I look in the mirror and my hair has been mangled. Gouges cut out seemingly at random, long strands hanging in a few places, it's a nightmare. (Literally) I start crying and screaming.

"Who did this? Why gods, why would you do this to me?" I run into my mother's office and she's sitting there, smirking. "Did you do this?" I ask her, "Did you ruin my hair?" I grab her shoulders and start shaking her.

"I just don't want you ruining your life. I also fixed your room for you." She says. I run into my room and look. All of my things which could be considered even remotely feminine are gone, my clothes, what little makeup I have, my hygiene products, everything. I run back into her office.

"Why would you do this? Why would you do this to me?"

"You look much better now. Like a proper young man." She starts laughing. It's at this point when the dream starts getting disturbing. I start beating on her, punching and kicking, but nothing seems to affect her. I'm wailing on her, giving her everything I've got, I'm crying and she's laughing. It goes on for a while and then I hear her say, "Not so pretty now, are you?"

That's when I woke up.

My mother has never been anything but supportive of me, yet my dreams always paint her as some kind of monster. I don't know what this means and I'm really freaked out right now. Give a girl a hand? Or maybe just a shoulder?

*hugs*

Not sure what to say...it is just a dream, since your daytime experience is much better, perhaps it's not a dream about your mom?

And sometimes (to paraphrase Freud) a dream is just a dream. I wouldn't worry too much about the violence (either to yourself or to your mom).

Thanks Beth.

It's just that my dreams are so vivid, it feels like reality when I'm there. I'm just kind of freaked out that my brain would ever think that beating up my mom was okay...

Beth has got it right, a dream is just a dream.  My reasoning here came from some University Sleep and Dream Research Hypothesis I read about a while back (I think it was Stanford).  It was a very believably constructed research paper, and it made a whole lot of sense at the time.

I'll admit you had an interesting dream.  But in dreams your mind randomly selects a situation you may have briefly thought about and adds in familiar people in prime rolls, with other people from life as players.  Your brain is clearing a memory or thought that could have been trivial, or important, and any unresolved issue, discussion, or decision.  Your brain just wanted to clear that information and start fresh.

Your dreams can mess around with what you absolutely love to do, places you hate to leave, and people you deeply care about just because they're familiar.  And it's just a way of allowing your mind to do something with all the thoughts or plans you briefly had.  So maybe your brain said "Here's something about hair that needs to be cleared.", and it began to make up a weird little story, and fit in other memories and thoughts as it worked with the memories and things connected to that recent thought about hair.  So, it was just a dream and you need to marvel at how wonderfully your brain works, and enjoy your dreams for what they are.  After all, you have a lot of dreams at night, but only remember a small percentage of them.  Ever wonder what the rest were about?

Example - A few days ago I saw some 30 year old photos of me as a land surveyor, then early this morning dreamed about being told to work on a freeway as surveyor in a rain storm.  The dream added in a neighbor as my boss, some random acquaintances as coworkers, and a dear old friend as a "wing-girl" who tagged along.  What the hell?

Your mom sounds fantastic and supportive.  May as well ask her for some style advice. ;)  LOL

Your going to be OK hon.   Hugs.
