Prime Minister John Howard stood firm against same-sex marriage Thursday as an opinion poll revealed that 71 percent of Australians believe that same-sex partners should have the same legal rights as common-law heterosexual couples.
"We are not in favor of discrimination, but of course our views on the nature of marriage in our community are very well-known and they won't be changing," Howard told Sky television.
"We are not in favour of discrimination, BUT..."? He may as well have said "We aren't in favour of discrimination, but of course gays and lesbians don't count because it says so in the Bible, so we'll discriminate all we want against them".
The idea that I live in a country where our elected leader feels like it is OK to say something like this disgusts me. I'd say bring on the election, but our current opposition are almost as unlikely to do anything about this issue as our current excuse for a government, unless they start sliding in the polls and decide they need to do something drastic to pick up the numbers.
Sometimes I really dislike this country >:(.
