NJ Transgender woman stabbed to death
Jason St. Amand, September 30th

Eyricka Morgan, 26, died Sept. 24 in New Brunswick, New Jersey and Devonte Scott, 21, who lived in the same building as Morgan, was soon arrested and charged with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, the Newark Star-Ledger reports.

According to Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey, police arrived to the boarding house to find Morgan, who was born Evan Morgan, injured. The victim was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick but died at 9 p.m.

Morgan was a former Rutgers University student and was featured in a 2011 article by the college about LGBT people living in Newark, New Jersey. In the story, Morgan discusses the struggle she had coming out as transgender to her family, saying, "I had to make a decision. Either I be myself or let others control me. So at 14 or 15, I packed up all my stuff and I left.''
