Title: i'm a criminal?
Post by: YBtheOutlaw on October 09, 2013, 02:38:28 PM
for the first time i googled lgbt issues in my country today. i was frustrated with what i found, a half knew it anyway, but something as plain as that is not acceptable.
in short, being gender queer is illegal in my country. it has been criminalized by a colonial law which remained after we got independence, and nobody has dealt with it or tried to alter it ever since. it doesn't really say being gender queer is a crime, but it says sexual 'indecencies' are not allowed but hasn't clearly defined what they mean by indecencies. so that law is currently interpreted as something against rapists etc. plus the lgbt community. i'm not sure if there has been any convictions for being homosexual, but the police readily will come to combat it. people who get caught as gender queer are put through some psychological therapies to fix them, though i don't know to what extent that would work.
the only good thing i found was a support group based in the capital, but i could expect some help from that.

i'm sorry for saying nobody has tried to change the law. many activists have tried to change it, and are still trying. earlier i meant the politicians and officials who have the power to do that. they either don't care or fear that the homophobic transphobic majority would protest against it. of course they already do.

I'm sorry for your situation. I know how it feels being a criminal :( its not illigal being trans in my country, but I have felt it as being illigal because transgender also has to go to instututions who is linked with laws of sex offenders.

you have to remember its the law not you who is wrong. think how many laws who is ->-bleeped-<-ed up putting people down from the past to now.

Do you think it would be posible to change the law with efford? and whats the reason they have this law in general?

I second that! It's just terrible that people still discriminate against others that are different.

thankyou. but i don't feel it's criminal at all, the law is just super stupid. it was passed down from the colonial law and nobody has meddled with it ever since. the activist groups are trying, but to get a politician to change it a public opinion is needed, and creating one is a very hard and slow process in a conservative country like this. without one, the majority will oppose the change and might even turn violent against us. they are already rude enough. i don't think any politician would like to lose his popularity among the transphobic homophobic majority. so much like winning minority rights in a racial conflict *sigh*

I know what its like. theres still rules where I live who is very stupid simple because nobody knows about them. and its very difficult to get politicals or the general population to get attention and help changing it. Some transgender have already gave up I also have somethimes, But currently I am in a fighting mode so I belive we can do it even when its difficult and may take time.
