Title: Just got a job - need advice
Post by: Hayzer12 on October 09, 2013, 11:11:40 PM
Hey guys, ok so I just got a new job. It will most likely only be for a short while, as I tend on merely keeping it until my girlfriend and I move for her med school.

I started orientation yesterday, and everything has went well.

Here's the thing though:

I am 2 years on T, and am planning on having chest surgery early next year (provided I can save up the money I intend to save) and pass 100 percent of the time, and have for quite a while now. I have my name legally changed, and it has been legally changed on everything. Because of this, my gender is NEVER questioned. On applications I merely choose the "prefer not to answer" box so that I cannot possibly get into any trouble. However, because I have not had chest surgery, my state ID (I live in TN) still says F on it.

I gave that to the HR guy on orientation day, and he made a copy. I filled out all of my tax info, again making sure I clicked "prefer not to answer" on the gender question. He logged into his account and began his process and was like "wait a second, this is weird" and it had my gender say "prefer not to answer". He was like "ah, I doubt you're supposed to see this but look what it's making me put. So weird." and it had "Identify as:" for him to click because I did put "prefer not to answer". He selected "Male". He was like "OBVIOUSLY. Man I guess you accidentally hit 'prefer not to answer', whatever it's all good".

He took copies of my ID and whatnot, and didn't notice the F.

Should I divulge this? I mean I haven't lied about anything. On all the paperwork I put "Prefer not to answer" and on the background check divulged my previous name.

I would like to keep it to myself unless asked otherwise, because honestly I don't view it as anyone's business.. but I honestly do not want to get into trouble for anything.

Even though he "assumed" I think I personally would set it right. It might affect you if you ever get a state, county or federal job. Especially federal as those backgrounds are tough enough if there are no errors. Take care little brother.  :)

Let me also just make it clear that the background check already came back ok. This was during orientation and on the onboarding process that this occurred. He selected "Identified as: Male".

Lol, so just leave it? I honestly think that I should be covered if it ever comes up. I never lied, and he selected "Identifies as" because I had "Prefer not to answer"checked. This is a transfriendly company, apparently. Though my state does not prevent from gender identity being discriminated against, gender identity is included in the company's anti-discrimination policy. That is why it was an option for him to fill out, I'm assuming.

Hayzer, you entered your honest answers.  If someone changes that, it is not your problem, especially in light of your temporary status.

Definitely just leave it. You've done nothing wrong and it's all worked out. Congrats on the job.
