Title: need to clear the air on something.
Post by: kariann330 on October 30, 2013, 08:59:06 PM
So since i came here i have been seeing something about once a month and its getting REALLY old. For some reason yall seem to think its ok to refer to people who are transfobic, homofobic or whatever as, rednecks, hillbillies, or backwoods. Yes the mods are good at editing the posts, especially if it's reported....but i gotta ask, PLZ STOP. I find it offensive.
Why do i find it offensive....cuz i was born in the backwoods of southern Tennessee, i AM a redneck....i dip, i sip moonshine, i drive a lifted pickup with smoke stacks, and on and on and on.

Yes i may not live in the.muddy south any more, but you can move a girl from the south, but never take the south out of the girl.
All im gonna.say now is do it again and i won't turn a blind eye, ill just hit the report button followed by the thumbs down button.
Have a nice day yall.

You should use the report button when you find an offensive post. You shouldn't start threads like this that are just obvious challenges to a pissing contest. Just my opinion, hon. Hugs, Devlyn

Yeah but you're a cute red neck.  ;)
And I happen to like Tennessee, after living in Virginia for the first few years of my life it's one of the few mountain infested states that I actually like. And remember the best way to reply to folks that act like that is a fine "Well bless your heart".  :D

Did you report it? I didn't see anything today, but I don't get to every post.  I've seen some of the offensive redneck posts, I agree with you. My best friend and the first person I ever came out to is a redneck girl from Dothan, Alabama. She taught me how to make gravy, too, and now she likes mine better. Anyway, this is a support site with moderators.  We report the troubles away. The idea is to leave behind a structure of help and information, not free for alls.

Hugs, Devlyn

Same with the crossdresser slams. The mods (thank you!) took down a horrible post made this afternoon. It's not a perfect world, I say offensive things sometimes, so do you. We all have to try our best to think before posting. Hugs, Devlyn

I avoid the term redneck, but I never saw it as an exclusive derogatory term towards southerners.  Here in NY, I have seen people refer to their neighbors and some acquaintances as rednecks.  Now it's probably not a nice term for anyone to be called, but is it exclusive to the south?  Would there be a northern equivalent? Honestly, I have no idea about the origin of the word or what it means to every person.  I just know that some see it as offensive and avoid using it for that very reason.  Having said that, like all words, people use the phrase in different ways.  Some people mistakenly replace the word bigot with "redneck", and for someone who sees redneck as a replacement of the word southerner, that would be offensive.  People use words in various ways and contexts.  What's important is how they are using the phrase and what idea they are trying to convey.  If they are mocking the south or people that weren't born in a metropolitan area, I can see why you are upset.  I know plenty of well brought up southerners who are good people and worthy of respect.   Don't let it get to you.

I still find it fairly profound that I am a farm owner. (I'm currently a suburban dweller, I lived at my farm for 15 years before making some life reforms.) Clearly there is diversity all over. When I dealt with the USDA the office there didn't bat an eye when I had my transition. Or fertilizer companies, although some neighbors are distressed, not all.

The US nothern equivalent would be "wood ticks".
Very offensive.

Quite honestly, I've always thought that if mere words not even directed at you are a problem, then the problem lies elsewhere. Not talking to you specifically. More like to humanity. But it is true that moderators can't be everywhere, so if you spot something that you consider offensive, you should hit the button to report it to them. This is a forum that tries very hard to get everyone to get along as well as possible and not to insult or exclude anyone at all within human capabilities. So even if they saw it and didn't see the offensive character of it, if you report it, chances are that they'll think it over and do something for you.

The term 'Redneck' was originally used for farmers and farm hands whose back of their necks were continuously sunburned from working sun up to sundown, to me the term indicates a down to earth hardworking individual

Possibly because I hold to the term's original meaning and have had plenty of jobs that required a cold compress to sooth the burn at the end of the day the term doesn't really bother me and I actually take it as a compliment

I do understand that some people find the term offensive because some other folks have perverse the meaning and try to use it as an insult

The only time I've really felt bothered was when a neighbor claimed to be a redneck, I wanted to slap him upside the head because I know the lazy somethin' somethin' hasn't seen a days hard work in his life

I suppose it is based on each individual's experience and perspective as to what is offensive or not

Let's all try to be considerate of each other's feelings as best as possible

I spent about about 90% of my time on this planet living the shadow of NYC. I also spent about 5 years living in rural West Virginia. You know Hee-Haw, Dueling Banjoes, etc.. When I took the trans beast head on it was in WV. There I had no fears about going out presenting as female.

In the suburban liberal paradise, totally PC on the outside New Jersey is where I am afraid for my safety on top of knowing full well the whisper campaigns and trash talking.
