Used to have acrilics but then I started playing sports and found out the hard way that nails don't go well with sports.

I miss them but im used to not having them now.

I've got a lovely dark green on my toes right now.  Painted them on Friday for luck at football the nect dat, and State beat Michigan! I say as long as I wear this green, MSU sports teams are invincible!

I also haveba lovelt light blue, an orangey red, ans a dark purple. They're all metallic colours; I love the shine they give off.

no fingernails polished in boy mode, it'd draw too much negative attention.

I love wearing nail polish,

My toes always are painted, in the winter months, where I wear closed shoes, i wear mostly clear polish as i like the shine it gives my toe nails. In the warms months, i use colors. My favorite colors are blue, red and maroon. I also love having a french pedicure done on my toes, which I would do anytime of the year. Last summer I wore a very nice dark green shade, which I really liked. If I go out, I like match my toes to my shoes or outfit color, But i hate pink nail polish.

My hands, I wear color on them anytime of the year, Red or maroon are the favs for my hands. If my toes are not Red or maroon, then I wear a french manicure on my hands. I don't like the colors not to match.  Although I do experiment with different colors on my hands.

I am a fanatic about my nails. I shape them, buff them, and always have them painted. I really like some of the metallics by Hard Candy (Crush On Lava is amazing), and of course OPI composes a large part of my collection.

Between my Room Mate and I, we probably have well over 700 colors.....seriously.

As I said...I have them painted always...even if I'm wearing the "man suit". People usually just assume that I am gay, or goth or something. If people actually ask, I just say "Because I like it". There is only so much of the real ME that I am willing to stifle in order to blend in.

I'm too harsh for fingernail polish, but I've been wearing toenail polish for 3 years or more. (When I identified as Gender Fluid.) In the summer time I wear open toe sandals most of the time. I usually pick darker colors and a bright blue (currently wearing now.) Even in guy mode now, I show them off whenever I can. Had a funny incident in guy mode one day with the bright blue.

I was at the grocery store in one of those self-checkout lanes. I was ringing up my groceries and this bug huge guy that looked like he just got off his Harley with a beard and all. Real tuff guy looking. He asks me, "Hey you paint your nails like that?" I said "Yes". He responded in a friendly way, "Hell, that's awesome. You got more balls that I do. Keep it up!" I smiled back and finished bagging and walked away.

Lately I've switched to Gels, love them. Got a great kit as Costco for $48, included 4 colors, LED light kit, bonder, and topcoat.

I won't be allowed to wear nail polish most of the time once I finish nursing college, so I'm making up for it by changing colours at least once a week while I can ^.^
Since RLE started I've stuck with red, mostly because I feel it sends a stronger message than other colours do. But that might just be in my head. Before coming out my most used colours were a dark green called "forest green" and a light blue that I think was called "heavenly blue" in swedish. For parties I like to go for silver or gold, sometimes alternating between both.
And I have a dark purple nail polish with those magnetic pigments that I kinda like.

I painted my nails a lot when I went full-time... but eventually I couldn't permanently break the habit of biting them. Oops. I am sorry about that.

My fingernails are too brittle to even try. I chip them all the time. Besides, I don't like the way my fingers look with polish on them. My toenails I'll paint on occasion, though. I usually wear a coat until it completely wears off (about 2-3 months)

I wore acrylics for about 4 years and then I let them go for the last year after I broke my thumb, now I'm probably going to go back to acrylics as I tend to bite my nails badly when they are natural. My nail lady has still been asking others about me too, just heard from one the other day that she's wanting me to come back...

Love nail talk, how cool. Love my new purple, it's cool. Luckily I can grow 10 long nails & keep them if I'm careful.

I girl or woman has to have nice hands & nails. It's just a must.

I would post a pic or 2 however I cannot figure out how to do it on this site. I have a 100% female facebook page that I post pics on with lots of other cis women friends that love to play with nail polish/designs.

Cool.

I'd like to share this with all the other girls who have either just begun the active part of transitioning and any one who might be finding themselves in a rut because of all the various issues that might be holding them back: Treat yourself like the princess, soft and gentle with respect and care, take a half hr longer than normal getting ready for your day. use the time to see your good features and try to make those better. don't be down because you are still being clocked as male, don't be down if you for any reason have to tend to some of your day in boy mode. This too shall pass. one of the things I discovered that I am doing that helps me keep my poise is my nails. They are longish and well cared, I keep them clean and polished and matching my outfits. might sound trite but it really helps. when I am having anxiety about my transition I can always look at my hands and think; "Those are my hands, my nails. I have to be gentle and graceful in my movements." If we can expect these kinds of actions from ourselves early on we can handle all the other expectations we encounter as well.

So on the topic of Gel nails.
I've been looking around at a few home kits but a friend was telling me not to waste my $ on it, that after the different polishes and hassle I'd be better off just getting them done a few times a year for special occasions. any truth to this? or am I able to save?
Also I've seen some salons have LED lamps for curing do home models come this way? I'm a bit concerned about harsh chemicals and the UV issues.

The nail kit I purchased at Costco was nailLuv (http://nailuvpolish.com) and was $48 on sale at the time. I've been very happy with it and have added lots of colors from other brands of gels. (They are also available at Nordtroms and Macy's.) My only complaint about Gels is there is a lot less selection of color available, but I'm sure that will change with time. The LED curing lamp works great, it only takes about 45 seconds to cure each layer (you need at least 4 layers, base, color, usually another color, and the top). No smudging or fuss.

I have found that regular polish topped with a UV cure Top-Coat gives 90% of the durability and life of a full gel polish system and is easier on the hands to remove.

I have also tried the home kit from Gelish, works fine but the tiny LED cure light is so slow.......zzzzz......zzzzzz.....
I ended up getting bigger LED lamp.

I have not tried the Costco one.

If you are hard on your nail polish or tend to wear the same color until it chips or wears at the tips then Gel-polish will last the longest. The best Gel polishes are a three step system, bottom/bonder coat, color coat, top coat, curing each layer with UV light.

Removing the Gel polish system is a bit harder on the hands, as it takes an long acetone soak to remove them.

Removing the UV top coat is just a little more work that removing regular nail polish. Use a nail file to scratch up the top coat before using the polish remover (if you file most of the top coat down to the regular polish layer they remove easily.

I haven't seen convincing information on the safety of the UV lights (good or bad). If you are concerned, either use gloves that don't have the fingertips covered or use a a full spectrum sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection (keep sunscreen off of your nail and cuticle).

Best Wishes
-Cindi

I'm a lot like Emily, where I'll tend to go more for the red or pink colors.  :) Nice color on your toes Willow!  :) I've also tried the press-on nails once or twice, but nothing beats coloring your own nails!  :) And I do like polishing my finger nails with a clear coat, because I too like the way it glistens when the light hits it!  :)

Hey Willow, if I were you, I'd put a fresh coat on every second week just to keep it looking fresh.

You're my kind of girl Gwynne. I can't see having a diffrent color on my fingers from my toes.

I've never tried the sparkle Francis Ann, but one of these days I might try it. Yikes! At $8 I'll be using it very sparingly! ???

Right now I have both my fingers and toes painted blue. But they are different shades. My fingers and toes were black for a while, and then I did my toes metallic blue. My fingers were purple with blue glitter on top. Then I did my nails bubble gum pink glitter for halloween.  Now they are teal. next they will be orange. The toes are still blue, but I might do them orange too. :)

I have thought about getting a good kit from ebay. But I have not decided. The lady that does my nails says her customers prefer the uv over led because the led gets to hot to fast from the chemical reaction of the curing process. I do need to go in next week for a fil. I am paying attention to what is done because I think I can do it myself. I do it admit that it is much easier to just go to the salon and 30-45 mins it is done. No fuss no muss.... I guess I have another decision to make, I hate when this happens....  ;)

Thanks! I have l pretty long fingers, but wide hands from playing bass and guitar since I was a tween. I have Flintstones feet, and unfortunately my daughter inherited them instead of her mom's dainty feet and hands. :) but at least I only take a woman's size 10 shoe.  Not too bad. (I'm very short)

It's Wet n Wild Fastdry. The color is "Teal or No Teal." Don't you just love the names? lol I think I bought it in a supermarket. Nothing fancy. Probably cost $1. :) it matches my patch of blue hair. :)

It covers well. I gave it two or three costs and it's been on since last Saturday.

I started with black because I'm not presenting as female yet, but dress very androgynously. I'm a musician so my hair is shoulder length too. I am into the goth thing a bit and wear lots of black. So black nails didn't seem to attract as much attention as brighter colors.

I have some purple I'm going to do soon. Blue and purple are my favorite colors.

RavenMoon, Cool again, I wear a size 10, you have nicer hands & longer fingers than I do. All I can do is let my nails grow. I'm 3 months HRT & live 90% fulltime as a woman. I'm ready to go fulltime as soon as I can finish electrolysis of my remaining facial hair. OPI & Revlon are nice but expensive & really hard to remove. I've just started Hard as Nails brand. It is good polish, in lots of shades & so much easier to remove.

Good to share, have fun GF.

Thanks FrancisAnn! I'm not crazy about my hands. I have to keep my nails short because I play guitar, but I always liked short nails on girls anyway.

You are lucky! I'm pre everything. I can't wait to start HRT and have my facial hair removed. I swear I wish I could snap my fingers and be done with the whole thing!

But I waited this long, so a little longer won't kill me. I hope. ;)

RavenMoon, It's a bitch with all the hoops we have to jump through just to become a woman. I'm not lucky, just older & tired of waiting around. Estrogen is so nice. It will make you more confident in your self as a woman.

I've always painted my nails since childhood, playing dress up with my mothers poilsh, lipstick, high heel shoes. I was a little girl I thought until the first grade teacher told me I was a "boy". Ugh that hurt.

Good to talk with you. Have fun.

As Mercedes nicely describes and others agree, nails can be an important part of our life pre and thru transition.  Allowing myself to have beautiful, shaped, buffed and polished nails (and long hair) was enough to alleviate the days when I could not fully accept myself or transitioning.   As a nurse anesthetist it was critical to have clean and in my case girly nails with out polish as my hands were the tools of my trade.  I placed spinal and epidural needles, endotracheal tubes and intravenous lines as patients, their family and other staff carefully watched, sometimes holding their breath.  With a license to touch I enjoyed connecting with people with what I felt was a feminine gentleness, sensitivity and appearance(my hands at least).  Now free to be me, I love wearing purple and pink polishes on all my nails and also a cover coat to help it last.   The simple pleasures of going girly are amazing and reassuring for me.

I'm older as well. Will be 56 in 10 days. :/ I had my mom paint my nails when I was about 4 I think. They were red. :) then I used to paint them when I was in high school. It's a wonder I didn't get picked on more! I just started doing it again last month. ;)

Yes, lots of hoops to jump through, but I can't wait! I'm so looking forward to starting my transition. Soon!  :)

No problem!  :) That's interesting. I've been playing the guitar for the past 30 years and my hands haven't widened. Guess I'm fortunate. My palms are just a litte smaller than yours are. And I use to wear a woman's size 10 shoe but I now wear a size 11.

Thanks for giving me the color of that nail polish. I'm gonna get some real soon. I'm sure I can find some at my local grocery store.  :)

Yesterday I did my nails with a pale pink sugar coat. It looked really cute. Much more girly than the look I usually go for, but whatever. It's cute.

I always liked soft pinks and rich purples and metallic shades like silver and blue. I've never been a big fan of red personally, but that's just me.

I got a bottle of Wet & Wild's New Years Kiss and omg I love it! It's like a clear coat that sparkles! So many ways to use that! I'm so happy I found it! :D

I'm always in boy mode, but I go out with a single polished nail sometimes. Kinda my little way of sticking it to the gender police without drawing attention to myself.  8)

Mine are finally getting longer, they seem to go slower than they used to or I'm impatient. I'm going to keep 10 nice long nails for life. If working in garden or other tasks I always wear gloves & always use clear hard polish to make them stronger, hard as nails type polish works, it it real hard & helps protect the nail.

I've been with purple for the past 2-3 weeks however ready for some change, not sure, maybe back to red during winter time. It's cold where I live.

Have fun GF's.

Oh yea, I'm squaring mine off from now, round seems so old fashion, so I'm just filing them square & letting them grow out, they will probably be stronger with that shape.

I've always found that nail polish's that have vitamin E seem to really help my nails grow faster.  :)

Thanks I'll try that. I used to take biotin but stopped, maybe that's why they grow slow. Guess I'll order another bottle. Biotin is good for hair & nails or so it seems.

I think I read somewhere this also helps with hair growth? my hair has become brittle after beginning HRT, but there were other factors...
guess there's prolly a hair thread in here somewhere, or good ol google.

Today's nails.
OPI's "Let them eat Rice Cake" with a high gloss top coat.

Mercedes, cool GF. Can you post a pic of your nails & that shade of OPI?

I'd love to post pic's however not tech enough to figure it out. All I can do it change profile pic, that's easy.

Ever have square nails?  I'm trying, they look cool. I've never had that style & excited to see them grow out.

Not a problem Francis Ann. I remembered that my late wife once had a nail problem and I suggested that she put some nail polish on it, and it was healed in two dails because of the vitamin E.  :)

I was able to find the nail polish at a dollar store and as soon as I got home I immediately put on 3 coats and it really looks great!!!  :) Thanks RavenMoon for the excellent suggestion! I'll be posting some pictures soon!  :)

I'd do reds and pinks if I was in girl mode. But I'm not yet.

Here's my current collection:

I tried red for the first time recently. Liked it for a few days, but then had to compensate by going to black. What does that tell you? :)

It is funny how some colors look just right & others just do not make you feel good. I've tried a lot of different shades during the past month by applying & wearing all night til morning. Some that I did not like at first & really wanted it off my nails looked good & felt good the next day.

It's funny to me. Thanks for posts. Have fun girl friends.

I had blue polish on my toenails for a few weeks and decided to change them. I hadn't left them that long before. To my surprise my toenails had turned chalky white under the polish, and I could scrape off the top surface of the nail! Scared the poop out of me! A girl friend of mine said not to worry, it happens to her sometimes. Turned out to be keratin granulations, which is caused by leaving the polish on too long and from my new all leather Converse all stars. The combination prevented the nails from getting enough air! Whew! :) so they are naked at the moment, which makes me sad. :(

Well, I've been trying to drop my finger/nail biting habit and let my those heal so I could paint my nails. I think I'll try some kind of dark blue.

Good luck on letting them heal up or air out first. I've never heard of that. They stain sometimes if color direct to the nail before a layer of clear polish depending on the type polish.  Have fun GF.

They are 98% back to normal. I had to look it up. At first I thought it was a fungus! But then I found photos that looked exactly like mine, and the common cause is nail polish.

I'll wait until after the weekend to paint them. I think it was also the polish I used. It was metallic so it might have sealed them off more.

Raven Moon, Some polish even the most expensive brands really soaks into the nail & stains them. That was probably the cause. Polish should never cause any fungus, yuck. My toes have been painted for months & no problems. You will be OK. Have a very nice weekend GF.

Yes, after I did my fingernails pink for Halloween they retained a pink look after I removed the polish.

If you Google "keratin granulations" you will see what they looked like. They had patches of what looked like liquid paper on them! It was chalky and dusty. On a few of the smaller toes the whole nail was white!

I let them air out and put lotion on them, and the next day they looked much better. :)
