Title: Have you ever seen anything so beautiful...
Post by: LostInTime on July 01, 2007, 11:03:58 PM
As the Bald Eagle gracefully flying across the sky? I lucked out one morning on the way to work and got to see one close up over the fields. It flew down for just a few moments and was then gone. I had to go on the Internet and verify that where I lived actually was able to be home to such a beautiful creature. I have a few beautiful red tail hawks that also hang out in the area, one even almost tangled with me one day when I accidentally walked in between it and it's prey.

At one time there were estimated to be 500 thousand eagles and by the time the 60s rolled around we had maybe 400 nesting pairs left in the wild. The eagle was then protected and pesticides that wrought so much damage were banned.  Now we have 10,000+ nesting pairs and I hope that number continues to increase.

Hats off to all of those who made this possible.

No, but I'd like to. I enjoy watching the hawks fly though. Maybe my part of the country doesn't have eagles.

All animals are beautitul creatures, but certainly those that can fly are so blessed IMO.  I'm always amazed at how caring some people can be.  Maintaining a species alive is not an easy task, so bravo for those who dedicate their lives to this cause.

We've had bald eagles nest in our back yard here a couple of years.  There's a tall tree down by the creek where they set up house.  It's about 150 yards or so from the house.  It was wonderful to look out at the nest with binoculars and see what was going on.  I feel very lucky that those baby eagles were born at my place and went out themselves to self propagate.  We see the eagles here from time to time but they haven't nested in a couple of years.

And yes, they are very beautiful.

Some of my most surreal moments are when I'm sitting in the park alone watching the birds and squirrels.  I sit perfectly still and watch how close they get to me. There is this one squirrel that likes to get really close to me, close enough that I could probably grab it if I wanted to. I just feel so at peace when in nature.

I used to do that too until the geese showed up, as for as a they are concerned if you have food it belongs to them, that's a mean bird. I saw an Eagle flying once, the non bald variety, it was very majestic and very large.

hehe, luckily there isn't any water near where I go, so no geese. I live in a city so instead I have to deal with dirty pigeons.
