Title: Need some advice
Post by: aztgirl2011 on November 26, 2013, 07:50:05 PM
Hey all

My partner and I are trying to get a roommate to rent our other bedroom.  The last guy we were going to rent to disappeared after I told him I was trans.  We never heard from him again.  What is a good time/way to come out to a potential roommate?

Thanx

Welcome to Susan's.

You might try browsing or posting in Trans Housing Network.  Remember to use safety precautions--strangers are strangers, after all.

Good luck.     ~V.

And where can we find said housing network?

We're still trying to think of a way to explain things to the general population-we are trying to use all possible avenues to find someone.  :)

Are you in the US?  In the US you still have a right to discriminate against potential roommates, and I actually think it's the right policy.  It's simply too close a relationship to effectively enforce a non-discrimination policy - not romantically, "whose dishes are these" close.  It's illegal to express discriminatory preferences in advertisements, but if you don't like singles from Arkansas (for example) you don't have to let one into your home.

With my crystal ball (or wherever I'm pulling these answers from) I say leave it toward the end of interviewing, especially if you get solidly gendered female.

- One other thing, can you keep it confidential?  My girlfriend and I are transsexual.  We don't want this to be a surprise problem later.  Really we'd rather you never notice, but we thought it was better for you to know now.

The decent-human-being answers to that are either "no problem" or "thanks, I'll find somewhere else to live."  You can't control which, but do you really want to stealth or smooth-talk your way into living with prejudice?
