Title says it all! ;D I seriously can't be the only person on the planet who looks past the spikes and thinks that hedgehogs are the most *ADORABLE* creatures *EVER*, can I? Or maybe I'm just crazy lol :P
Either way, I wanted to start a thread in dedication to these oft-overlooked creatures. I always make sure I look out for these guys when they come to my garden, especially in Autumn when they're getting ready to hibernate. Wherever I've lived I've always done my best to raise awareness of them, especially around Bonfire night because people often forget to check whether or not any of these poor little things are sleeping in the pile of leaves / dead wood etc they plan to burn :'(
Maybe it's because they're such lonely creatures that no one seems to care about, or maybe it was my love of Sonic when I was a kid. Whatever it is I love hedgehogs to bits! I really wish I'd found time to build a hedgehog shelter this year for our two regulars but things have been a bit too crazy and busy :( we're 90% sure they're safely tucked away in next door's garden though and she's an animal lover too so they should be alright :) Hopefully I'll find time next Spring / Summer ready for next year :D
If anyone is interested, I can post links to a couple of good tutorials for building DIY shelters? Or am I just being super geeky now? :D
I love hedgehogs as well. I had two when I was younger. :)
I love them and used to watch them at twilight,I used to put a bowl of hedgehog food out and watch them come out to eat it.
Hedgehogs have a special place in my heart (and I don't mind the prickles).
Yeah, Hedgehogs are cool. But I prefer porcupines.
HEDGEHOGS YEAH!!!!

Time to pull out the big guns... I'll show them to the kids now MWAHAHAHAHA >:-)

I have to gush for a little bit. :P This was our baby Cashew. He was the sweetest little bean ever. I bought him for my wife when we first started dating and she treated him like a baby. Just look at those little teeths! I worked at a vet at the time and one of the doctors even commented on how he was the friendliest Hedgie she'd ever met. Sadly he passed away a few years ago from a disorder called Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome. The saddest disease with the cutest name.
I can't see your pic, but I LOVE that avatar.
Ah, there it is.
Awww, that is awful about your pet.
I would always be ultra depressed when we would lose one of our furry friends.
Thanks. I love all the weird little memes you can find on the internet :P

You got that right. She was a character from a cartoon in the mid-80s called "The Get Along Gang".
Aww, I love hedgehogs. I have two now. My albino is the grumpy one and the other is super hyper and friendly.
I will post pictures of fluffy, our pet hedgie
*sqwee*! This thread is still going?? I haven't been around for a while I'd forgotten I'd made this! :D Aww, all those pics are soooo cute!

Aaaaaaaand now I want a hedgehog.
Oh gosh yes! I love hedgehogs! I wish I could get one!
I had hedgehogs for years. They're expensive, though--special food, special vet requirements, etc. I can't really afford one now. Sometime in the future I imagine I'll get another one, though.
This is Spirit, my last little hedgie. She passed away a few years ago at the age of four. :(

I had a ex-wild one for a while. As long as you get rid of their parasites, internal and external, they can make fine and interesting pets. It's a shame to see so many of them killed on the country roads around here.
I used to put hedgehog food out for the wild ones in the back garden. For security, I put a lock insert into the back door lock. I had a human visitor, though, and the key to the insert disappeared, so I can't open my back door. From the look of things, I would have to pay to have the whole door replaced and I can't afford that. I miss feeding and watching the hedgehogs.
A girlfriend had one and we would take turns putting it on our bellies because it would tickle as it scooted about LOL
Love 'em. I used to put out special hedgehog food in the back garden. I put an insert in the lock of the back door but then mislaid the special key, so I don't open the back door anymore, and no longer feed them. M->-bleeped-<-ies ate most of what I put out, anyway.
One way of solving the problem is to uninstall the lock if you can still access the side of the door you installed it from. You can also pull the pins out of the hinges and gain full access to the lock. If none of these work, call a professional lock smith and if they can't remove it, they can drill it. At least you will save the cost of replacing the door with that approach.
OMG Yaaaaaaasssss!!! I have had several hogs as pets!!! They are so fun and everyone is like "well aren't they pokey?" They really aren't if you aren't trying to harm them. I just want to squish their cute faces!!!!

Thank you, Dena. I did try unscrewing the lock but the mechanism seemed to be too integrated with the door itself. I even tried to saw through the insert. I haven't tried pulling the pins out of the hinges yet, so that is worth looking into. A neighbour also recently agreed with you that if necessary, the lock could be drilled so that so that I shouldn't have to replace the door, so that is good to know.
It will be nice to feed the hedgehogs and birds again.

When I get new keys, when ever possible I get duplicates made and store the original should the key I normally use get lost. I had to rekey the house so I ask for 8 original cut keys. This was because original cut keys work better than duplicates and as the machine was set up to cut original keys there was no problem making more. Yes original cut keys are more expensive but I really learned the lesson with my roommates car. It was a lease car before she bough it and she never received the original key. My key was about a third cut and I had to be careful with it in order to make it work. It ended up that my key was the primary key after the other key broke so I went to the dealer, got the key code then took it to a lock smith and had 4 original cut keys make. Should have done it years ago.
