Poll
Question:
Transgender/Two-Spirit: What province/territory (Canada) were you born in?
Option 1: Alberta
Option 2: British Columbia
Option 3: Manitoba
Option 4: Newfoundland and Labrador
Option 5: New Brunswick
Option 6: Northwest Territories (present day)
Option 7: Northwest Territories (pre-Nunavut lands)
Option 8: Nova Scotia
Option 9: Nunavut
Option 10: Ontario
Option 11: Prince Edward Island
Option 12: Quebec
Option 13: Saskatchewan
Option 14: Yukon
Option 15: Not TG/don't know/not born in Canada but I want to see the results
This is both a cheeky follow-up to Joules' USA poll and a serious scientific query. Calling all Canadians - let's make some trends of our own! I made sure to not leave out the territories, despite the relatively recent creation of Nunavut. (For sticklers I've included an option for pre-Nunavut Northwest Territories just in case there were still any hard feelings over the change. I won't get into the issue of anyone old enough to come from pre-confederation Newfoundland and Labrador.) I also explicitly added two-spirit to the title since this is supposed to be all-inclusive and I don't want to upset anyone. Your identity isn't important to the poll, just your birthplace. As before, anyone else feeling left out of the party is welcome to mention by post their non-Canadian location or other-worldly origins! Basically, if you can use a computer or a smartphone you're included. If you can't use a computer or a smartphone then either you're not on Susan's anyway or you can ask another member to post for you. (One registered vote per user.)
Whew! That was a mouthful. Now have at it, Canucks!

He he he, what about us Yanks? Sorry Violet, couldn't resist!
That's fair game seeing as I was kinda '
yanking' your chain anyway. ;) If more people choose the last option in the poll than there are actual Canadians voting I will laugh also and not be surprised!
Yaaay! People are starting to make their mark in my poll. Don't forget to say "Hi" on your way through everyone - sometimes I get to feel a little lonely as a Canadian on this site. At least there's three others with me in Ontario so far. I'm feeling better already! ;D
I'm an honorary Canuck, so I guess Quebec, due to my French language skills.
:P
As some of the locals say it sounds like Trana, to the world, Toronto. My Dad was born in pre confederation Newfoundland. We do have a small number of Canadians here & yes it does feel some lonely. We can be proud to represent Canada here, eh.

Okay, I accept that - just as long as you're not voting with the Separatists!
Remember though, folks, it's supposed to be about birthplace to see if there was some kind of environmental or societal influence in certain areas that made us trans. I will say though that the USA poll doesn't seem to be generating any clear trends so far. It will likely prove to be true that we're a predictable genetic anomaly throughout the species.

Or more recently to the world, ROB FORD. ::)

I don't vote in Canada. Yet. I may move up there if things turn south here. Or perhaps to Argentina. Who knows?

On a side note, there seem to be a lot of Argentinians in Toronto.
I was born and raised in S.W. Ontario and started fighting for medical treatment in the early 1960s. I was most often the first transsexual patient most doctors had seen and it was a tough struggle. By the time I left (1974) there were a couple of "gender clinics" established.
I threw in an out of country vote to skew the results! I have been to Goose Bay, do I get an honorary mention?
Hugs, Devlyn

1960's, eh - does that make you more than one kind of Pioneer? ;)

Sure - Goose Bay is highly appropriate!
:( sad panda... I am the only one in BC so far. I feel very fortunate to live we're i do. This area and surrounding areas are quite accepting of most unpopular things.
Jessica
Plus BC has so many beautiful places. I love it there.
I was born in Alberta, but I currently live in New Brunswick and will eventually move to either BC or Quebec depending on masters programs.
I'm surprised there haven't been more members from BC posting. Figured it would be a hotbed. Maybe there's so much acceptance there that few feel the need for a support forum? We can only hope. They don't know all the fun they're missing!
Agreed, I won't give up this forum! I love hearing the advice and support from all the members!!
Well I hope more Canadians are going to speak up - so far I think there were only 11 legit location votes versus about 69 in the USA poll. At least I'm not feeling so lonely in Ontario anymore because it's well out in the lead right now.
New to the forum, and thought I'd chime in with my fellow Canadians!
I seem to be a part of the rare British Columbia group. Hello from BC!

The thing I don't like about polls here is that they say more about people who vote in polls than anything else lol.
At least we'll learn
something from this exercise then! ;)
Quote from: Joules on December 07, 2013, 12:05:29 AMIIRC, Gwynne is Manitoba, she'll be back in a few days.
I thought it was Saskatchewan...

Sad to admit, I get a little fuzzy on Canadian geography...
I don't know where she's from, but I know she's a Rough Riders fan, so I assumed Saskatchewan.
According to South Park every Canadian football team is named "Rough Riders".

Yes, Gwynne lives in the upper reaches of Saskatchewan. I understand she has headed south, to North Dakota, for the warm winter weather. Hehe.
I have been in Ontario and Quebec, but only those areas. I would love to see the Canadian Rockies by train.
I once did a quick study on the petroleum geology of the Mackenzie River delta area, and also of the Norman Wells oilfield. Get me the minerals rights!
I'm back now!
Although I live in Saskatchewan, I'm actually I transplanted Ontarian.
There is, however, at least one legit Saskie member. I'll have to PM her and prompt her to vote.
I'm not surprised at the under-representation of Quebec (due to the language issue), but am surprised at the dearth of BC votes.
Thanks for drumming up support, Gwynne. You just mentioned Toronto in another thread - glad to see you enjoyed your stay. It's may be cold here today but it's probably warmer than Saskatchewan right now!
Quite the adjustment from +12 the other day in TO to -40 last night in Saskatoon!
...and why exactly did I move here?
Albertan, born and raised - 2nd generation.
Thanks for the post Erin - you're helping your fellow Albertans feel less lonely!
I love Victoria, BC. Does that count?

I might have to accept that because the voting total kinda fell short of my expectations. ;) That and the fact that everywhere but Ontario is severely under-represented. If this and the USA poll were statistically valid surveys then Ontario would be the trans hot-spot of North America! There are plenty here, especially in Toronto, but I'm not so sure we have the most.

I get a few now and then in the US poll, may be a few years before there's enough to say much about trends...
Perhaps we need to
Rock The Vote? (http://rockthevote.com/ (http://rockthevote.com/)) BTW, check out the crazy platform shoes rendered in the rolling banner on that site right now! That's mostly why I bothered to post that link. ;D

Maybe later on I'll start another thread for Ontario specifically. It seems to be the trans hotbed of Canada!

It makes sense. Out west we're taught that Ontario is the Cener of the Universe. ;)

Welcome! Thanks for helping keep the country in balance.
Manitoba Here
Checking in from "Wet-coast" Vancouver area!
While not of First Nations decent I have been very close with FN groups in my area and my heart dances with the drums. (You have to have a really GOOD reason to get me away from the dance circle.)
First from Newfoundland to vote :)
Doesn't surprise me really. I don't think the transgender community here is very big. The LGBT community in general here is pretty small.
Born in Sask. reside in Alberta now.
I was born in Toronto, Ontario Canada and now reside in sunny Port Charlotte, Florida!
