  I thought I would start this up because there seem to be a number of hardcore math geeks around here.  They just derailed and then subsequently and ironically saved another thread from disaster in the MTF section.  So what's the deal - Do you love math or did it ruin your life?  Do you communicate better using complex equations rather than rudimentary English?  Or do you have as much trouble adding 1+1 as the first Pentium Processor?  Bring the discussion here and you won't have to worry about Admins trying to put you back on topic.  Be as delightfully obscure as you like!  (Just for the record, and to stir the pot, I'm not a maths fan.  That's right folks - Boooooo on me!)

I find math to be extremely interesting, especially the very advanced stuff, but I am horrible at it!  :laugh: I didn't make it past pre-calculus.

I had a calc 2 final today. Horribly failed it.

Did you get your grade yet? I felt the same last semester after my income tax final, but it ended up being my best grade (thank you bell curve).

I needed a 96% on the final to pass the class, and I forgot how to calculus when I opened the test. I was able to do maybe 60% of it, and that's not even how much was right. It'd take a miraculous curve to pass. I'm probably going to end up with a 1.5 in that class, the rest will be 3.0 or above.

i think its ok, as long as its useful, for example i'll never need to use algabra 2 stuff so i hate being forced to learn it.

My father was a math teacher and I always hated math!

I was a good student and had good grades, but I thanked God as soon as I could stop studying it! I am finishing my degree in biochemistry and I had to pass trough calculus I... I hated it so much that I got reproved! Now I am free of it and I dont want to look at it ever again!

I majored in Math and Computer Science in college.

However, the older I get, the more interested I am in the human world and the less interested in the symbolic world.

While I know math is a useful tool, I'm not the biggest fan.  If I studied long enough, I would be able to ace a test; however, I would have to study really hard.  This was rarely an issue for me in most subjects.  Yeah, it was rewarding to figure out a problem and realize that you overcame something difficult, but it felt like a tedious requirement for someone in the social sciences.  It doesn't need to be shoved in our faces every second.  Sure, it's important in general and some people need to have advanced skills, but how many mathematicians have an advanced understanding of history, law, or politics?  Well, then why does a poli-sci major need to study intermediate mathematics?

Perhaps it wouldn't be an issue for me if I felt no pressure and could simply study the subject for fun.  I'm still holding off on the GRE, so this is a sore subject for me, lol.

Your cryptic message seems to have been solved by Joules.  I hope everyone figured out my much simpler encoded greeting at the beginning of the poll.  Basically it was the first thing every kid did with a calculator before moving on to programming web memes into their graphing calculators:

No way.  I am semi-good at math, but I hated it in school because of all the homework.  I definitely don't find it interesting or fun by ANY means.

I can cope with simple calculations but anything advanced and I'm prone to fail them miserably.

Maths was also the subject that caused me the most frustration in school and it didn't really help to have mathematically inept mom at that point.
Weirdly, though, I've never failed maths. Gives a false impression that I'd be actually good at it.

On a side note, my grandmother is almost like a human calculator.

I don't mind simple forms of math like pre-Algebra or some basic Algebra or basic math problems.  However, I hate geometry, advanced algebra, and all forms of calculus (even though I've never taken a calculus class).  I find probability and statistics to be very interesting and rewarding, but tiring, especially if you don't have a calculator.

I wanted to go back and get a math degree, but they only offered classes during the day and NOBODY offers a decent math degree online :(

My thoughts exactly basically about everything that has to do with maths.

Love that!  It's not just funny because of what appears to be a slightly poor translation.

  Looks like the "Yes" side is winning.  That is, if you count math enjoyment as an actual win... ;)
