Title: Name struggles
Post by: Liam on December 21, 2013, 07:17:16 AM
(Note: my old username was Luke Andrew.)
I'm out to a few friends, and they've been pretty good about calling me by my chosen name, but Luke came to feel kind of wrong. I chose it because it began with L, as does my birth name, and I wanted something short and simple. It's stopped feeling like me in the last couple of months, and I decided to try out the other name that I'd been tossing up, which was Liam. Liam feels good to me, it feels like me, I already respond to it as though it's my only name. I'm just a bit worried that I'll keep on being indecisive about names. Did anyone else do a bit of back and forthing before settling on your name?

'A little' is being mild in my case. I did a lot of back and forthing. You're not weird at all for giving something as important as your name a lot of thought. I've got my own thread about it, actually. Some advice given to me that's helped me is:

While 'cool' names are tempting, consider something that was popular in your birth year, and practice signing your name over and over with the names you're thinking of to decide what's most comfortable. If you really like a name that you fear might make you stand out, maybe make it a middle name and just don't go by it. Don't worry about picking it in a hurry or being indecisive, though. Just give it time.

Finding a name was a process for myself. I went through a good handful of them. Even worked different jobs under different 'aliases', lol. Then I was at the point of going to court to get it done. I had to get something set in stone. I gave my mom a list of names I liked and told her to choose. She liked Simon and I slapped my middle name Vincent on it just because it flowed well. At first any name you choose might feel a bit alien to you but once it's used enough then it grows to you. It's strange the day you come across your birth name on something and it feels like it was never yours...like that is a whole different person. It's a nice feeling but different.
