GID (Gender identity disorder), I don't know if there's more than one that was listed as a mental illness and I don't know if GID was once listed as a mental illness or not? I'd heard something related to trans people was once classified as a mental illness but recently was removed from that classification but is still classified as something else. Sorry this is all I remember, if anyone can help me, thanks.

I found this in the Wikipedia section on Gender Identity Disorder.
In December 2002, the British Lord Chancellor's office published a Government Policy Concerning Transsexual People document that categorically states "What transsexualism is not . . . It is not a mental illness." In May 2009, the government of France has also declared that a transsexual gender identity will no longer be classified as a psychiatric condition in France.
The new term is Gender Dysphoria in the US anyway. It's not a mental illness.

Definitely not a mental illness! Like Jay said, it was changed to Gender Dysphoria in the DSM V: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/04/gender-dysphoria-dsm-5_n_3385287.html
Gender Dysphoria is not in of itself; a mental illness. It has been listed, for example, as a contributing factor of a mental illness, borderline personality disorder for one.
It can also be causative in cases of depression, anxiety, social disorders and many others.

Hey Anna, this was a very interesting thing to read. It will definintley give me some defense against the psychiatrist I'll be seeing next month. I really hate going in empty handed.
It was considered a mental disorder/illness in some older DSMs as was Homosexuality at one time (Homosexuality was dropped from the list of mental illnesses/disorders long before Transgender was).
