Title: 3D printing
Post by: randomdude5 on January 13, 2014, 08:00:43 AM
Some of you may be aware of the stuff going around about 3D printing. More people are getting access to this technology and many people are experimenting with it, and at this point they are able to make pretty much anything.

Something in particular that I found interesting was in this video...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0EJmBoLq-g

Up until a bit past 4 minutes in the video they talk about printing body parts and organs such as kidneys. (The rest of the video is also interesting by the way, but about printing different things.)

I came across this video kind of randomly but couldn't help but think of how cool this could be for SRS in the future.

It would obviously take a lot of time, (at least a decade according to the video), and other parts would be prioritised. Things like vital organs. But I think it is definitely something that could be possible in the future for those who are young and are not happy with current options. What do you think?

DISCUSS.

I hope it's something that can happen in my lifetime. However, I don't know how much public opinion will get in the way.

Reasons of morality often get in the way sadly, even though no one is getting hurt against their will here. I can't wait till full body printing comes around, silly as it sounds.

I would imagine that if some real money were put into it, this would be possible in 5-10 years. The problem is lots of money doesn't go to the proper stem cell research. From my understanding they have already used stem cells and 3d technology to print ears and other soft tissue, I could imagine that it would be possible to do some rather radical things with such technology not just printing proper nonrejectable body parts but, I could imagine it would be possible to alter the structure, and even do interesting things creating a new face perhaps and grafting it on.

I am worried though, while being able to craft new parts would be great for the trans community after all, this could lead to much better feminized faces, much better bottom surgery outcomes for FTMs, and perhaps even better labiaplasty outcomes. This could also lead to a serious problem of cisgendered people basically buying all the parts they need to be "perfect".

There is already a divide between those who can afford that nose job and tummy tuck, and those who can't; could you imagine when you can buy the perfect dimples and eyes?

Surgery for trans people is not the same as plastic surgery. We have a medical condition. Of course, it's the fact that members of the public thinks it's the same that will probably prevent us from being able to get it.

It might have applications more near term for bottom surgery (though not top, I think). Basically I think the applications might be parts rather than the whole thing (or you'd prefer a prosthetic). For instance, they could make the urethral lengthener instead of getting thru some body part, or a vein for phallo. Unfortunately, I don't see this for nerves. But it could cut a whole lot of trauma out of bottom surgery. I have heard of proposed uses for some surgery where they needed a small part.

The very second I saw this post I just knew it was going to be about 3D printing somebody a penis  :P

Just as a semantics issue, as I do know entirely what you mean and agree; Plastic surgery includes reconstructive surgery as well as cosmetic surgery. Cleft palate surgery, reconstructive burn surgery as well as transgender surgery are just some examples of the first category. Many, even most, types of plastic surgery are considered medically necessary so it isn't a term you should feel uncomfortable with :)

Haha I've actually got one of these (A 3d printer that is!!) :D I made one about a year ago. No idea why, I just needed too...I've now got next to no use for it, other than for printing random bits and bobs.
