Title: M-shaped hairline
Post by: Lara the Lover and the Fighter on January 27, 2014, 04:10:40 AM
So, I like many transwomen suffer from having an m-shaped hairline.

It so weird.  Even when I was like 12 years old, I had these spots where my hair just wouldn't grow.  My sister had them too so I don't think we have receding hairlines.  That being said, I am worried that it will never fill in, even on HRT.  My sister has baby hair in her spots after like 15 years of growing her hair out.  I don't want to wait 15 years!!  >:(

Anyway, I've been trying different hair styles. You can't really see it in my avatar but I usually just part in the middle or kinda to the side.

Kind of like this:
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fhairstyles.thehairstyler.com%2Fhairstyle_views%2Ffront_view_images%2F2529%2Foriginal%2Fa0009-Attitude.jpg&hash=c073e536004e3fba6abfdde4cd2fe8900527b3fb)

I mean, this is what I go for but fail in the end.  My hair is close to that length just not blonde.  My mother says that my hair looks like the joker's.  WTH!?!?!

So what can I do to get it more like the girl in that picture and less like this:

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.empireonline.com%2Fimages%2Fuploaded%2Fheath-ledger-the-joker.jpg&hash=190b2bdcd9f868e16e5e77ffb722f3333595ad71)

Sorry I can't post pics of my hair.  I lost the camera during a birthday celebration.  sigh....

I'm too proud and too chicken to go to a professional so, what should I do?  I've even considered filling in the weird spots with eyeshadow o.o  Please help me!  :embarrassed:

Probably wasn't the best idea, but at age 18, I got frustrated with that "dip" in the centre of the hairline and pulled it out.

The only option seemingly to get it right is hairline lowering surgery.

At least you don't have a hairline like Andrés Iniesta. He has a horribly receded hairline, almost like he has an island of hair on top of his head.

The "M" shape is called a "widows peak".  A lot of older women and men has this hairline, including yours truly.

I think she's talking about the male pattern recession in the upper corners of her forehead. The widow's peak is that little bit that extends out from the middle of the scalp, usually associated with a woman's hairline.

I like that hairstyle you've shown. You're M pattern doesn't look all that pronounced, in fact it's hard to see even with you hair pulled back, I think that style would work really well for you.  :)

Holy crap, you pulled it out!?!  That sounds so painful!

You're right Andres has a killer hairline.  Kinda like Jason Statham.

Yeah I sort of have that peak as well.  I guess I shouldn't complain since it could be much worst.

Thank you, thank you!  Not just for the comment but because your the first person to call me she all week.  I tell people its okay but it secretly really bugs me.

It really isn't so bad unless I wear my hair a certain way but sometimes you can see a little bit of skin through the sides of my hair when I wear it down.  In my avatar I was trying to hide the hair lines.  I honestly wouldn't wear the headband at all if it wasn't for the hairline.

Here check it out.  Maybe I'm just being over critical but it bugs me.

I think you would look very good with that hair style, if you're worried about the hairlines showing maybe part it slightly more to the middle?

Thanks!  Yeah, Ill probably have to move it slightly to the left or right depending on what side I part it on.  Hair is work!   :D

Your hair does not look like The Joker at all. I think it looks very pretty. I have the same shape to my hair if I don't grow it out. Then I can just put my hair to one side.

I have got a very pronounced M, even more than the picture of the Joker and the only non-wig solution I found is a simple fringe, combined with a light blonde hair :)

I wouldn't worry too awful much. I have a tendency to obsess over things like the index to finger ratio deal and I have seen quite a few women and not just older ones with the M shaped hairline. Obsession may not be the right word but I start comparing rather.

M is for men. I hide it just by my hairs. Strong winds sometimes reveal my M-shaped hairline. Also after running and sweating. Sometimes, pony tail is better to hide the M.

My colleagues say that I do not need to worry about hair loss, but I do. I have been taking finasteride and applying minoxidil to prevent further hair loss. I guess it has helped a little bit, but I am not quite sure.

My kids want me to be bald  :o

Whats with that!!?? My kids say the same thing!  "Cut your hair.  Lets get the scissors."  I think its because they know how much I love my hair. lol

Do poneytails work to hide the hairline?  I thought it would be the opposite but now that you mention it, it could help if you do it the right way.

I see nothing wrong with an M-shaped hairline! Growing up, when I did not have bangs and wore my hair pulled back in a pony, my sis would tell me I looked like I was balding, but hey, it is what it is! I've had it my whole life. I do find that bangs cover it pretty well. And m is not for man, it is just a genetic difference that can happen to girls or boys.

Here are pictures that show my m hairline and how well it covers up.

You could get hair transplants to fill in that area. If you're planning on having FFS though you'd probably have to wait until you got it done. I'm probably going to get maybe 3000 grafts done. Just trying to decide whether to go for the FUT or FUE method. Basically FUT leaves a massive scar at the back of your head, but FUE requires you to shave parts of your head (not an easy option for me).

Streighteners. (cant use em for my lifes sake)

Also you can put your hair this way or that, but the angle hair comes out of your head can effect the over all presentation too.

For a new style to fall in, it needs to be maintained, so the hairs start to adopt the new angle over time, wet styleing takes some of the spring away and hair sprays help hold the hairs in place.

The itching we get after using a hair spray is what happens when your hair is like im supposed to be in that directon.

Has changed my natrual parting this way more then once

If you want that hair style you're going to need healthier hair. No offense, but yours looks rather brittle and porous. Invest in a professional shampoo / conditioner combo and use it for a couple months. Also, eat more protein if you have been avoiding it.

I agree. In addition You should be taking a good women's multivitamin along with a good hair, skin, and nails vitamin. The condition of your nails often mirrors the condition of your hair. I take these and my nails are like knives -hard, sharp, and healthy, likewise my hair hasn't gotten even one split end since my last trim over 3 months ago. I don't get any hairs in my brush or combs anymore either. You can see the difference in my hair as well vs. it's condition a year ago. I do attribute a lot of my hair's recovery to the Avodart I take, along with my other hrt meds, however the above mentioned vitamins in combination with I know have a lot to do with it because I started taking these before hrt.

Best wishes!

I take the "One Source" women's daily, and the AppleNutrition Hair Skin & Nails vitamins. These seem to work really well for me in conjunction with my hrt, and you can get these at Wal-Mart, both for around $22.00. Each has 100 vitamins so they last about 3 months. You'll be very surprised at the difference in your hair and nails, as well as overall health.

No problem, glad I could help. Just make sure you get the right hair skin and nails vitamin. It comes in a white box stating the brand and what it is on the front. You shouldn't have any trouble finding it.

My hair is a big issue with me, my being Native American and female, and when I started losing patches on the top left right side of my head I cried myself to sleep at night. I started taking these vitamins and they brought it almost to a standstill, and of course after I started my hrt I began to get my hair back. Now 5 months later I've a lot of new growth I can onlt attribute to those vitamins and my hrt.

All My Best Wishes!

This is absolutely true. They're both primarily made from the same protein, keratin.

This is a very good long term plan, but don't be discouraged if your hair doesn't change in the first few weeks or anything. The hair that's grown out of your scalp are a collection of dead cells. Nothing you feed it will make that any different. Therefore, any nutritional deficiencies you are correcting by supplements will not be shown until the new growth is being pushed out. Hair grows an average length of 1/2" a month. You'd be looking at months before seeing any changes in your overall hair health. But, try a B-vitamin complex (important) and Vitamin D.

However, there's no getting around it. You WILL need keratin to grow healthy hair. Supplements may cause complications when dealing with protein. Too much protein can lead to many complications in the body, not to mention it can cause your body to not process it well anymore. It's really best to get it from meat.

For now, try good shampoo / conditioner combos if you can or get a keratin treatment at your salon (expensive but lasts for 2-3 months). Do not go with Garnier or anything like that, but the stuff you get at salons (I use Biolage, personally). DON'T GET ANYTHING SCENTED, as these have additives that attach to your hair and are not good for it.

Alainaluvsu,

You mention getting Keratin from meat. Which type of meat do you get it from? I only ask because I don't eat red meat or pork. I eat only fish/seafood, or poultry/fowl. I'm just wondering if I'm getting any Keratin from these sources?

Thanks

I have seen plenty of women with recessed hair at temples and the M shape hairline.  I don't believe an m shaped hairline is actually a sexually dimorphic trait. It may be more common in males, but there are many females with the same trait.
Ditto. I myself don't have one, but I know many girls and women that do including my SO. So I agree, while it's more common in men, some women do have a less prominent M shaped hairline.

A classic M shape that men tend to have is much less common in women (but it does happen). It's generally due to a rise in testosterone as it is an indicator of MPB (which can occur during pregnancy). Women do typically get a slight bit of hair loss at the corners, but usually not a total loss, more like a large area of thinning. Female alopecia tends do occur over a large area and is not really focal towards the front or the crown.

I'd like to differentiate between a true M shape:

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F2.bp.blogspot.com%2F-5NRdILPnHlc%2FUfErjMwS_cI%2FAAAAAAAAAIQ%2Fmzs3Z8N_26w%2Fs1600%2F20130725_214021.jpg&hash=3e27f20bbf3d49bc41c3588c195a4b5bc6515acf)

Corner Loss:

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.ehowcdn.com%2Farticle-new-thumbnail%2Fehow%2Fimages%2Fa04%2Fps%2Faf%2Freceding-hairlines-women-800x800.jpg&hash=2f5b19c464cbdf28ce367def2d8ec54a34a3084a)

and a heart shaped face:

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hairworldmag.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2014%2F02%2FHeart-Shaped-face.jpeg&hash=55b83578fad53c792935d7b2b8b665734c027380)

As you can see, corner loss can lead to an M shape, but there is no real loss going towards the center of the forehead to indicate a Q ball effect coming in. A heart shaped face is simply when the natural hair line grows in a way that makes the face look heart shaped. It's very rare for women to lose their hair in a male pattern effect, thereby giving them the classic M. They generally lose the corners first, then an all around thinning starting with the top (not the crown) of the head. MPB is called MPB for a reason. It's usually seen in men (as a result of DHT choking the follicle), and it has a couple of primary patterns. In fact, the technical term for MPB is Androgenic Alopecia.

Here's an illustration of how women typically lose hair:

The feminine hair loss pattern in photo number one is the type I had though not as bad until I started my hrt with Avodart included in my regimin. My hair loss stopped abruptly on the 3rd day, and has been coming back in ever since. I have plenty of new growth in my problem areas and the new strands finally getting long and starting to thicken (my new growth). Now you can't see my scalp in those areas unless my hair is wet. If my new growth remains consistent my hair will be as it was when I was in my 20's in about a year from now. As you can probably guess I'm very pleased with my results so far. :eusa_dance:

You can hide a lot with the way you wear your hair. I myself don't have an M shaped hairline, however, when I was experiencing loss I was able to somewhat hide it a little by staggering my part a little more straight along my head instead of hoe I usually part it slightly on the side angling toward the middle. I just dropped my angle toward the middle a bit in favor of a more straight part which enabled me to pull more hair over the damaged areas. In fact, I still forget sometimes I no longer need to do this, lol! The point I'm trying to make is that those who may have an M shaped hairline could easily hide it with your hairstyle. Bangs come to mind off the top of my head. Also, it might help to refrain from using a thick brush to brush hair back. I've even known cis girls that do this who had receding hairlines.

Best Wishes

So, I like many transwomen suffer from having an m-shaped hairline.

It so weird.  Even when I was like 12 years old, I had these spots where my hair just wouldn't grow.  My sister had them too so I don't think we have receding hairlines.  That being said, I am worried that it will never fill in, even on HRT.  My sister has baby hair in her spots after like 15 years of growing her hair out.  I don't want to wait 15 years!!  >:(

I'm too proud and too chicken to go to a professional so, what should I do?  I've even considered filling in the weird spots with eyeshadow o.o  Please help me!  :embarrassed:

In my opinion, going to a professional is your best option, otherwise, the joker will win. The choice is yours...

Its been 8 months since I posted that.  I'm still not sure about my hair line and I still haven't seen a professional.  My hair has grown longer and I have bangs now but golly...when the wind blows or when I am walking fast my hair flies back.  In these moments I am super self conscious.  It seems the only other solution is surgery and that really sucks.

No complaints!  Life is still excellent. :)

I spent some time last night with a woman who had a very defined M shape hairline.  And she wasn't even trying to cover it up with bangs.  She was beautiful and had really great hair otherwise.

I still do plan to get transplants to thicken up the front of my hear and to fill in the temples a bit, but I'm feeling a lot better about myself after seeing her.

Sometimes it's all about perspective.

I've thought about Dr. Cardenas a few times.  Please let me know how it goes! :)

I love meeting CIS women with the same features as me.  One day I will find my CIS Gender doppelganger.  Same height, weight, and general appearance.   One day.
