Title: Sperm bank cost?
Post by: ganjina on January 30, 2014, 12:36:01 PM
Hi,

I only need some DNA and blood tests and to get this sperm bank thing done to get started with HRT as I already have my referral letter. Have you been able to find something affordable and trustworthy? Seeing as many banks receive and store sperm for free for donations purposes, should not it be easy to find a reasonable offer?

Regards,

I went to California Cryobank in Cambridge- they look like kind of a' chain' from their website. I paid about $1600, which included 5 years storage. The storage cost was a package they offered, and was progressively cheaper per year if you paid for more years up front.  But this seemed to be a typical cost compared to everywhere else in my area.

Something to be mindful of though- be up front about your intentions for cryo storage. It can turn into a MAJOR hassle if your motivation seems ambiguous. In my experience, they only allowed me to say if my specimen were for donor (surrogate), or artificial insemination, and despite my efforts to explain that it could be either, they couldn't classify appropriately. Thankfully someone caught this after a few weeks, but if they had not, there could have been significant complications down the road- both legally and medically.
