I like the young Turks. They have very interesting topics. That being said I sometimes worry that whether pre -op or post-op people like us are going to be mistreated simply because they can look up our id information and then use it inappropriately.
Another reason if you are pre-op you should likely carry additional documentation from your doctor/therapist.
Yet another reason I don't fly. If I can't drive there, I don't go there.
If this did happen to me at a US airport, I would have Gloria Allred all up in their business yesterday. Public shaming for this kind of thing is one of her specialties, and you bet I know where to find her.
I believe the incident mentioned in the opening post took place in Canada.
She, Avery Edison (a comedian), is a 25 YO UK citizen detained in Canada for a previous visa infraction. She was sent to a solitary cell in a male prison before being transferred to a female jail.

I guess police state Canada doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

This is something that is pretty scary and sadly can happen to anyone if us! A friend and I were having this same discussion last mont about the "What If's" and its a fact that most states will throw someone in a certain male/female jail based solely on their genitalia. So kinda pops the question if we all go through the legal battle to change our names and gender marker aren't we not bound to that legally??
Disgusting. That happens everyday here in the United States AND IN EVERY city. Check how ICE handles trans people.
Thanks for this - very interesting and thoughtful discussion by the presenters. Being thrown into a male detention facility is one of my greatest fears. At least she was well known and able to mobilise social media to get a large fast and furious response - god only knows what might have happened if she wasn't in a situation to be able to do that (like so many other trans women). I don't know what her stand-up routine is like but, on the bright side, she'll have a lot of new material for her routine! :)
As part of my job I travel extensively thought the Americas and Europe, and all theses years of travel I have never been harassed by authorities or private citizens in any of the countries I visited.
I am respectful of the laws, the country's culture and history, avoid dangerous places (which exists in every town), and tried to focus my attention on the best each country/town/people have to offer.
Before going anywhere I do read about the place the people and their lows...
What happened in my home town was an abomination, and a classic example of when those just following orders try to think for themselves, while following the letter of the law, but not common sense. They inadvertently caused a massive human rights violation.
Canada is one of the most forward thinking, and liberal countries on earth, with a fantastic track record in trans rights. The rest of the world should follow us.
Unfortunately, somebody with no clue about gender law had to look up in some archaic law book what to do in a situation he had not encountered before. The result could have been disasterous. Education, and common sense, was the only thing lacking here.
I am not by any means condoning the actions of Canadian law enforcement, but Avery was attempting to enter Canada illegally. (illegal by omission, paper work problems).
I have enough faith in the Canadian legal system to think this is being properly addressed, and will NEVER happen again.
I'm glad to be Canadian. I am proudly trans, and can go where I like, be employed, I am in a same sex marriage, and my gender is legally recognized. Most should be so lucky.
I hope you all can recognize this as a TERRIBLE MISTAKE, and not the policies, and practices of a wonderful country.
