Title: Strange article?
Post by: Kade1985 on February 16, 2014, 06:42:26 PM
So a friend of mine recently linked me this article.. Like last night I think? Anyways we both kinda looked over it and I personally wasn't sure about it and she's a little more clueless than I am when it comes to this sort of thing... I was curious what others thought of it? I mean it supposedly lists side effects and "problems" with taking testosterone. Some of it is pretty obvious like the voice changes and so on (like the OBVIOUS of the obvious) but some of the other stuff kinda made me go whut?

Anyways here's the article. What do you guys think?

edit- sorry link not allowed

Now that I've really looked through it this article almost demonizes transmen in a way.. Almost..

Almost?

That was a hit piece written by someone who is pretty bitter.

Testosterone will turn you into a psychotic, balding, smelly rapist and an axe murderer who likes to torture puppies and eat raw flesh...

Ya when I looked over it last night I somehow missed the rapist part. Probably because I was in a bit of disbelief over some of the other crap. I was like wtf is this?

Just curiosity (cause I had no clue really) why is it banned? I mean shouldn't stuff like this be talked about so people can avoid it?

Sorry I don't want that to come off as confrontational, but a serious curiosity.

Edit: Rather learn from it* not avoid

Good point.  I didn't realize that I needed to be protected from such things. /snark

The blog in question has already been discussed ad nauseam on the site. And it's more than just the content in this particular case. The blog has mockingly featured photos of underage trans people that they almost certainly got off this site.

Anyway, we all know hate is out there. We don't need to give it backlinks.

Fair point... I just don't want to come off as trying to cause a ruckus but I think, even if over discussed some people are new here and some of them are family of trans people and need to realize stuff like this exists and it isn't true... they can't learn that if no one's willing to allow it to be discussed or scrutinized

.... Like an example... Being that my mother doesn't understand my position on being trans and doesn't want to but if she decided to look stuff up anyways and came across that site.. It's fuel for her to why she shouldn't accept me as being a transman. But if she came here shortly there after and saw it in discussion? It might save ME a world of pain. I think I'd rather have that then have her misinformed and no one willing to discuss why or how and then be looked down at by my own mother.

There are a lot of topics that have been discussed in the past that are no longer allowed. Now that we are aware this is a hate blog, it is on the banned list.

I appreciate that the blog may cause misunderstandings but we're not going to allow links to every hate site just so we can counter it. That doesn't mean we can't discuss common misconceptions about HRT and other issues etc. If you'd like to discuss the misconceptions or fears brought up by the article, that's fine. Just use your own words, don't quote the article.

Well as long as it's open for discussion I have a few things to say.

The LGBT community in general has made leaps and bounds, especially in the past ten or so years, and especially for lesbians and gays. That is AMAZING, do not ever get me wrong. I have been along side that fight for years now, and have been apart of it because until I figured myself out I just considered myself lesbian. Now that I on HRT and all that good stuff I am going to technically be a straight man but I will continue to fight the good fight.

However with stuff like this? We can't hide forever or bury ourselves under the sand for the sake of protecting ourselves or others from hurt feelings. It's time the transgendered people have their day in the spotlight. Hiding from the "hate blogs and mean people" won't accomplish ANYTHING. We need to stand up for ourselves not just say, "Ya crap happens" and then pretend it doesn't exist.

I said misconceptions about HRT were open for discussion, not site policy. We're not hiding from anything or failing to stand up for ourselves by banning hate sites. We're not pretending hate doesn't exist. We just don't have to give hate blogs any more views by linking to them. We have to pick our battles.  Who do you think gets more views and visitors? Showcasing hate blogs here gives them much more exposure than they could hope for. Regardless, this is a safe space and sites that don't fit our TOS and mission are banned.
