Title: Does HRT reduce your foot size?
Post by: EmmaK on February 18, 2014, 04:15:19 PM
I have fairly large feet, size 12-12 1/2 in men's. Which roughly comes out to a size 13 1/2-14 in women's.

I want to wear high heels after I transition, but I know that anything in women's above size 10 is a uncommon size. (im a footwear sales associate just fyi)

So my question is: Does HRT effect your feet like it does the rest of your body, making things more feminine and dainty?
Or do I just have to suck it up and shop around to find places that sell my sizes?

You can lose fat or muscle mass in your feet. I went from a 11 in women's sneakers to a 9.

You can but it runs anywhere between 1,500-2,500 per toe to reduce the size. I just don't have that kind of money.

I dont have large or muscluar feet, they are pretty thin and long. But I know that HRT effects soft tissues, and alot of your foot is soft tissue.

But it is possible - not necessarily with You, but I can attest that it happens :). Some people get C cup by just looking at hormones, others experience feet shrinkage :).
That's good to know! Hopefully im one of the ones with a foot shrinkage xD

Indeed, I did and before anyone fires back some snarky response I am going to do a pre-emptive strike on that. YES, it actually happened. No matter what brand of women's sneakers I buy now. 11's are like clown shoes on me when that wasn't the case in 2006. So, yes, it is possible.

But as far as fat is concerned, I am a total cow (chewin' my cud at this moment) so I certainly had some fat to lose, and still do.

That is one thing I will never expect. Even if I was a GG, I would have more than likely lost that lottery.

I never liked heels. They just seem like a back problem waiting to happen. My balance is bit off, anyway, so I doubt that I could walk in them properly.

Even if it takes me forever to learn to walk in them I still want to have the option to wear them. I cant see myself wearing them that often since I usually don't dress flashy, but if there is ever a time I want to wear a dress (and there totally will be), I want to wear "appropriate" shoes.

I'm the girl in my all girl relationship, so im alot more dainty and feminine than she is. (despite this awful body I currently have T_T)

She usually dresses up in casual or unisex clothes, sometimes she wears feminine stuff like sun dresses or blouses. But she has openly stated that shes leaving the "prancy" stuff mostly to me! I would gladly ablidge to dress more femininely!

I kind of em in your situation. I am a size 12 in mens and I almost could fit into a size 11 in womens. If my foot lost some of its girth I would be able to get away with a size 11 womens.

I don't think my feet are smaller (I am still a womans size 10), but they are certainly looking more feminine. I think the fat being redistributed and the skin getting more translucent were the major responsibles for this effect...and probably any reduction you might get may come from here.

My feet were always a disphoric thing for me. I always thought they were terribly ugly, but now...I am loving them :)

My shoe size peaked at a size 9 in men's shoes.  I now wear women's size 8 1/2 (sometimes just an 8 ).  So that's equivalent to what?  A men's size 6 1/2 or 7 or something?  So shoe sizes can go down.  I don't know why.  But like you say, it is possible.

Yes, my feet shrank. When I first started buying women's shoes I was a size 10 and I bought several pair and they fit well. Then I began noticing that those same shoes were fitting looser even though I hadn't lost any weight. Today I've lost about 25-30lbs since I bought the shoes and they definitely rattle around loosely on my feet now.

As everyone else says, it can. I'm not sure of the mechanism, but I do know I have a bunch of really cute shoes I bought pre-HRT and only wore a few times each, and none of them fit anymore. They were all a size 10.5-11, and now they're too loose to wear. (Really annoying!) Also one pair of combat boots that had fit perfectly for years... and are now about a size too big.

All the shoes I bought too early are heels, too. :) Figures.

I'm surprised that some have experienced their feet getting smaller on HRT. My clodhoppers are a US Mens 10 1/2 which works out to be about an 11 or 12 in Womens. I'd love for them to get smaller once I'm on HRT, but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

So which part am I wrong about?  The part about wearing men's shoe size 9 in the past or the part about wearing women's 8 1/2 now?  That's a pretty big difference.  I think it's equivalent to losing two full sizes or a size and a half.  So if that's impossible, then it must never have happened, and I must be getting one of them wrong. :)

Seriously though, I am the first to admit that there is some other stuff going on with me that is atypical for trans* people.  So I'm careful about commenting on hormones because they do affect me in strange ways.  My doctor's mind is routinely boggled.

ThePhoenix : I'm atypical myself in responsiveness, but I remain amazed at the people who are effectively calling those of us reporting this phenomenon liars - it's that my feet shrank or there's cobbler elves living in my house expanding my existing shoes, far as I can tell. :)

(I haven't lost weight - gained a bit, actually - so it's not that.)

Didnt mean to call anyone a liar. What I should have said is generally hrt has no impact. In reality, I think the vast majority of people will not experience any shrinkage unfortunately and its a shame but kinda how it is.

Sorry to offend anyone.

Lisa : Fair enough. I'm sorry if that came off snappish; there are a couple other people who chase these threads in order to *explicitly* say that anyone who reports otherwise is making it up. And you're absolutely right that every single personal report of what HRT has done should have an implied disclaimer of "FOR ME, and who knows if anyone else will ever experience this."

I've heard of some people losing a couple of inches in height. That sounds a bit extreme to me. I lost a half inch in height, but I think it was related to the loss of muscle mass in the feet.

Looks like the most of you had the luck with the shoe size... On 13 months HRT I can still see close to no change - I just went from EU 42 to 41... I don't know what is it in US sizes... I measured my feet and they shrinked about 5 mm in length and 4-5 mm in width, which is one shoe size difference... I doubt they will shrink more, although I want it very much... Nevertheless, I still hope :)
About the height - I think it is possible, because at my age (33) I lost 1,5 cm height since started HRT - I was 181-182 and now I am 180, which is still nice... I wanted to be a little bit shorter, but I don't know if it's possible...

I think I may have lost a size from 9/10 to 8. I also wear different sneakers all the time so I couldn't tell accurately. Overall, years of HRT have caused me to lose a BUNCH of muscle mass, which is a GOOD thing. I noticed my hands are way thinner than they used to be, and even old winter gloves fit looser than before. I can get away with squeezing into a women's size 9 heel, 10 is a little more comfy.

Not only my feet, my height also shrunk. I used to be taller than my mom but am shorter now and when I look at my old male shoes...they look so huge and feel loose when trying them on. HRT doesn't do anything for the bone health but it shrinks muscle and fat all over as most of you know so that's the result of having seemingly smaller feet. Don't listen to Lisa.

As another data point, I wear (wore?) men's size 11 wide. I have a nice pair of NunnBush dress shoes that I could wear briefly, but within minutes my feet would start to ache because they were too tight in width and length.  After reading this thread, I pull them out of the back of the closet, dusted them off, and tried them on again.  12 months on low dose hormones and losing 45 lbs. and they fit nice now. I can wear them all day!  :)

Of course, now all my other shoes and boots are loose now...  :-\

Yes I did as well. I know for a fact I lost at least 1/2 inch but I think its more close to an inch. I was close to 5' 8" pre-transition I am now 5'6 1/2". I was probably closer to 5'7 1/2" in prior life...but I never much cared...so even if I was that would still be a full inch!! The more scientific evidence I have though, is a growth chart I made on the wall for my children 8 years ago. I also made a mark for myself 8 years ago and about a year ago I decided to see if I grew like my children LOL... I was pleasantly surprised to see I had shrunk at least an inch!!

Shoe size I always wore a men's 8 prior so when I transitioned I bought the equal size in women's being that of a 9 or 9/12....I soon realized these were too big I now easily fit in 8 and even 7 1/2 women's....but my feet are a little wide so I if I can't find a wide I buy an 8 or 8 1/2. It's really convenient since these are popular sizes and I'm able to find many more styles.

Now heals! That's a different animal...I haven't found a single pair I could wear longer than 4 hours and its not that they were too tight! I'm in a real bind, since I have an engagement coming up that requires I dress a little more classy and will need to wear some heals.....UGH!!

I tried some 37 (8.5 womans size) and they fit but it seems like my toes will get like this:

My own shrinkage is not that dramatic. I went from a fairly-tight U.S. 10 to a very comfortable 9.5 and sometimes 9. Although what causes the foot to shrink is debatable, that it does in many transwomen is hard to dispute, unless we are under some collective cinderella step-sister fantasy. I have also lost an inch+ in height (as have many of my other sisters). What I find more peculiar is this. My left foot has always been slightly larger than my right. I always used it as the guide for buying shoes. But recently, my feet have evened out, and the right may actually be slightly larger than the left.

I love you all, regard of foot size.

There are tissue cushions in between the backbone.
If you measure your height you are supposed to be about 1 cm higher in the morning, compared to the evening.
This is considered normal.

Changes there can make for a difference in height.

Also changes in posture.
The backbone has an s shape.
Slight changes there can make for a difference.

I've also noticed that getting a wide-size shoe makes my foot go down half a size (same shoe, same day), suggesting that in some shoes I basically have to buy a half-size bigger to accommodate foot width. So it'd stand to reason that if my feet got a bit narrower due simply to muscle and fat loss that I might appear to also have lost a bit of size.

I think my feet have grown or shoe sizes have gotten smaller. As a male I wore a 11 1/2 in a good quality shoe but the tennis shoes I am buying are size 13. I tried on some shoes I haven't worn for a long time and they no longer fit so I did an internet search and came up with http://us.longtallsally.com (http://us.longtallsally.com). I am down to one pair of pretty worn shoes so I better order soon.
