Title: Are there any common jobs or profession MTF transgender do?
Post by: jeminajay on March 19, 2014, 04:51:06 AM
Hi everyone,

I am going to start a new life as a trans, and preparing to lose my job. (sure I will, since my wife and I share the ownership of a business, and I will have to leave everything behind.)

So I am curious if there are any common jobs or profession for trans people out there. In Thailand, job opportunities are not open in general. It's limited to prostitution, actress (if you are funny, ugly, or beautiful enough), makeup artist, fashion stylist, or a few others.

Please share your opinion and experience. Thanks with hugs.

Jemina

There are jobs that seem to be common among MtFs, there appear to be a lot of trans musicians, techies, programmers and pilots.

As for getting a new job, gender identity shouldn't come into it, there are jobs for people, not men/women/cis/trans/anything in-between.

I can't tell you what to do, but I can give you my life experience and observations as options to consider.

I have always excelled in administrative positions.  Before I had to take time off to prepare emotionally for the pre-op process, I was in-training to be Head of Human Resources at a fledgling multimedia company (who's name I will leave out as a proffessional courtsey.)  In the military I managed a tool room, organizing the training manuals and did sorting and polishing of the tools.  I have been in housekeeping and culinary positions like a baker and have tutored "special needs" children as well.  I was the primary floor stocker for girl's toys and worked customer service on the floor at Toys R' Us. Before I joined the military I was a psych major, dishwasher, and cook.  In grade school I was a library volunteer and loved to sort the books and file things.

I am also a self-employed independant author, and freelance columnist from time to time.  (Communication skills.)

Another transgender I knew was a manager at Wal-Mart and stocked shelves.  All others were in some sort of cashier or in sales of some kind.

Basically, I have found most MTF transgenders to make a living out of their natural motherly and nesting abilities, which includes good communication skills and gently putting things in their place. Guiding others (Human Relations, psychology, tutor), cooking and baking, cleaning (housekeeper/janitor), organization/sorting (tool room and toy stocker) are how it translated out for me.

If you're the motherly type, look at everything a mother does and ask yourself: how can this translate into a job skill?  Be creative and learn how to spin everything you're even remotley competent in to a transferable skill.

I'm in manufacturing. I have tried restaurants and retail which are supposed to be more LGBT friendly but the jobs just weren't right for me.

I'm in the music production and engineering field :P Artistic fields don't care about your gender identity most of the time; in fact some might even say its a plus. Everyone needs someone to look up to :P what better than a well-known trans producer or performer?

Laura Jane Grace was a small source of inspiration for me when my career was a worry on my mind.

I work at a veterinary clinic. I was deathly afraid of coming out to my boss who is a heterosexual male veterinarian but turned out to be the coolest (and sexiest) boss I'll ever have.

Digital Artist reporting for duty!

Joining the growing ranks of "techy trans" people!

...

If by "Duty" you mean drinking tea and sitting at a desk in a design studio for 8 hours a day...I mean we are not going into combat or anything are we? Because I would be MORE than useless...I guess in a pinch I could attack somebody with my graphics tablet pen...but I don't imagine it would be particularly effective...

Admittedly since going through all the therapy and counselling I am beginning to consider a career shift towards that area. Everywhere I go in Scotland I hear professionals lamenting the lack of people specializing in the field. You gotta think to yourself, "Hell...if I could get a psychologist who was also trans to help me through my transition, that would be great!" I also love listening/helping people and what little armchair psychology I can pick up in day to day life (a pretty poor use of that phrase if I am honest...but we can't go back now brain...we have come to far!...I mean you would have to delete this entire sub ramble about the bad use of the analogy in addition to deleting the analogy itself AND figuring out a replacement one...nah this is much better...OH A BIRD!)

I'd say IT and techie jobs would be a good bet. I'm an instructional designer and nobody really cares what I look like behind the scenes as long as my product is good and I play well with stakeholders and subject matter experts.

Someone else mentioned healthcare. I've heard the same thing. My g/f is a nurse and she knows several trans people who are nurses. Depending on your region/location, it might be a good field to get into.

Thanks to every contributions. It seems that the jobs trans can do depending on personal expertise, interests, and opportunities in different locations.

I am thinking about a couple things relevant to online business. What coming to my mind is to set up a website in my language giving advice to trans people. There is no such the website now. Most of them is sexual oriented.

I have 2-3 months to consider.

Thanks.

I have two jobs at the moment.  I teach swim lessons/ assitant coach on a swim team, and own my own rescue/ tow boat business that actually pays the bills.

I was wondering what other girls did for their income. Thank you for asking.

Curious question, but don't you already have the know how and talent to run your own business? Unless the start up costs are too great why not use what you already have?

I work in a bookstore, and I like it just fine.  :)

I have a master's degree in social anthropology though... haven't really used that to any effect so far.
