Title: How long does it take for the voice to become low?
Post by: makipu on April 04, 2014, 08:40:15 PM
I may want to restart T in order to only get my voice to be low enough (but not too much, it's fine as long as it's in the male range) but I definitely don't want to take it more than I have to because I was hairy to begin with and I know that I can't tolerate more hair than I already gained.
So I was wondering from you guys; how long does it approximately take for it to change? Does this also depend on the person? I took it for exactly one month and I felt like whatever that slightly low feeling I had with my voice reverted back to the way it was after stopping. Also, how long does it take for the T to clear out of your system?

My voice first broke around 3 months. I think it's typical for the voice to start to lower in the 2 - 3 month range, maybe as early as 6 weeks, and it does depend on the person as everyone's body reacts differently to T. One month is probably not going to be enough to create a lasting change. Since you don't want the other effects, have you thought about trying vocal exercises to lower your voice?

I'm not sure your voice do what you want without effort. I was "misgendered" on the phone all my life. It even bothered me twenty years ago, anymore of course...

My voice hasn't really changed since 6 months on T. It began cracking at month 1 I think.

Mine has lowered a bit after 7 weeks on T but only one person has commented (I'm not out to anyone here other than my therapist).

Yep - month 3 it was noticeably different.  By month 5 it was pretty much the same as it is now over 2 years on.

Thank you for the replies. I will try to take it at some point and I guess put up with the unwanted changes. :( I heard of doing vocal exercises but didn't look into it. I actually am able to sound low but it doesn't come natural. Will doing the exercises make it natural and not forced, like I have to speak from my chest?

If you're really trying to minimize hair growth, consider taking to your Dr. about also taking finasteride (propecia) it's a DHT blocker which is what is responsible for both hair loss on the head and hair GROWTH on the body. This site does a great job of explaining it imo: http://americantransman.com/2010/04/12/beards-baldness-and-whats-in-your-pants/

Wow, I never even heard of this Polo. Thank you for the information, I will definitely talk to my doctor about this.

I'm two months on T and it's gotten noticeably lower, or at least just resonates different. some friends that don't see me too often have commented on it so it must be noticeable.

My voice is mostly stable now. My first drop was three months in, the second was six months, and another about a year in. My voice still occasionally cracks and breaks, and I think over this last year it has gotten deeper. My husband says that I am still getting lower, but it could be just the way I'm talking now. I've been on T for two years and the major changes were in the first 9 months.
