Title: Need help with my voice
Post by: jenpa on April 07, 2014, 04:53:52 PM
Hi, I am a male-to-female TS. I've studied many of the numerous voice help videos on YouTube. I've tried to raise and move back where the voice is coming from in my throat, with limited success. Right now, I would rate my voice as a D+ or C-. My voice just sounds weird and fake, neither feminine nor masculine. A little bit like "Minnie Mouse", I guess (??) but if I bring it down any, it's just masculine.

I've tried uploading .mp3 files of my voice to my webspace via FTP, but when I click on the link, the page is blank or I just get an error message.

Can anyone help me? I don't have much money, so I don't want to invest in private lessons or a course, which I don't know would work anyway.

Jen,

antonia is putting together a voice group.  Send her a message, and she'll get you in the loop.  Work on centering your voice at A below Middle C for starters.  I sing the do re mi song in the car or when walking (It helps if you have no pride)  Don't use falsetto, but keep your throat relaxed and speak from your diaphragm.  Listen to other women, their cadence, and phrasing.

You'll get it.

I've studied many of the numerous voice help videos on YouTube.

Here's what worked for me (can't say whether it will work for you, but it's all I got):

1. I spoke in the highest, squeakiest voice I could manage. I concentrated on remembering the exact position my throat was in.

2. I would then position my throat exactly that way, but speak normally. Everything that came out of my mouth sounded female when I did that.

This is my 1st post here, but I have checked out the forum since mid 2013 (time for me to give back) In answer to your question singing works for me, gradually pushing myself to reach higher notes. As I do this, the higher pitched speaking voice comes more naturally. I am never misgendered on the phone. Hope this helps.

I'm going to try this.  Thanks for asking the question Jenpa.

Oh and welcome Melanie H74.
