Title: Surprising HRT effects
Post by: ath on April 16, 2014, 04:57:36 PM
I've had some surprising HRT effects. I'm about to hit my two month mark - and I'm noticing many changes much sooner than I thought I would. So I suppose they are surprising simply because I'm getting them now, and I wasn't expecting them this fast or maybe even at all, even though I knew they were possible.

My facial hair has gotten much, much softer. Also, all the hairs on my upper lip have turned platinum blonde/clear, where before HRT I could grow a mustache. The hairs on my chin and sides of my face also have turned clear, and in general my facial hair has lightened in color, thickness, etc. a surprising amount. At this point I doubt I'd be able to get laser. Also, my facial hair growth has slowed down to the point now where 4 days of growth isn't even equal to one day pre-hrt.

Another thing - a very pleasant surprise - I started feeling breast development on day 7 of HRT, and it has not let up this entire time. In fact, recently the breast pain/soreness/itchy-heat-ness, etc. has increased in intensity. My nipples look very different, too, and have also grown in size. My breasts are actually jiggling/bouncing as I walk, and I've got to be careful going down stairs - it's probably time for a sports bra or something. I also can't wear shirts in public anymore in guy mode - I have to cover up with a hoodie or coat or something, and even then it's starting to get a bit difficult to conceal them well.

Another strange side effect is my voice seems clearer, if that makes any sense. I'll describe it a bit better - basically when I'm singing my voice feels like it's more crisp - more clear - it doesn't want to get raspy as easily or fail hitting a note. My range is exactly the same as it was pre-HRT (~5 octaves, more or less depending on the day and circumstances), but now it just feels easier to sing loudly and clearly whether it's low or high. Before HRT I had a lot more days where I just couldn't sing certain songs because my voice was being temperamental.

Also, my reduction in joint pain has continued.

There's probably other stuff I'm forgetting to mention. These are just the major things. I've also had typical stuff like skin softening, skin tone lightening, some fat redistribution, etc.

What sort of surprising HRT effects have you all had? Anything like this? Anything different? Does this stuff I've been experiencing seem normal to you all?

I've been on low dosage HRT for about two weeks now. I've only started to feel slight breast tenderness but its very very minute ATM. All of my changes so far have been mental.

Everyone experiences changes at different times so your probably going to get a bunch of different answers.

What dosage are you currently on?

Party foul!

Yeah the effects are interesting. It's one thing to read about them and know what to expect. Much different to see them manifest on your own body!!!!

I've been on hormones for two and a half months. Not a single change. Not inside or out.

Bad genes I guess.

Give it time. It takes a while for the biological processes to kick in.  Plus if you are under an Endo's care, they are notoriously conservative on dosing, starting pretty much at background levels, and then ramping up.

These are the only discernible changes I'm seeing 7-weeks in:

Face:
Much less oil on my T-zone, nearly matte face.
Pores are definitely getting smaller.
What's acne?
My eye area seems to have opened up.
Lips puffier.
Cheeks a little puffier and my jaw line is getting softer. I seem to be progressing fast in these areas (I am half Korean afterall and we gals have big cheeks)
Skin is glowing already.

Hair:
(Also taking dutasteride since i'm about a NW2)
Hair regrowth overall, definitely liking what's appearing at the temples, widows peak.
Arm hair thinning. Leg and beard seems the same.

Body:
A little paler (asian?)
Some nipple firmness, only a little more puffy, but still less than what you may see with gynecomastia.
Skin is definitely softer can feel subcutaneous fat thickening.
Muscle strength is going down down down. I can't believe my arm gets fatigued holding up an umbrella.
Forearms and calf appear a little thinner.
I think I smell different and much less male body odor.

Sexual:
Still functioning but takes a little more time.
Jewels are a little smaller.
Semen running less and much clearer.
Libido definitely down (which is a god send, I'm so much more calmer and can focus on work)

Odd things:
Slower metabolism.
Hands a tad smaller and slender.
Neck seems slimmer.
My bottom jaw's resting bite position seems to have retracted ever so slightly.
My nostril flares and nose appear smaller.
My voice seems a tad tighter than usual contrary to HRT supposed to having nil effect on chords.
My body language seems to be becoming a little more graceful.

Mentally:
Maybe only slightly more emotional... I don't know. That's a hard one to gauge.

Med specific:
Although I think I may be less sensitive to spiro as a diuretic, I was expecting a constant marathon of running to the bathroom and replenishing. Not at all.
Arm vasculature increases and decreases with the coming tide of spiro intake (obviously blood pressure).
You know those spiro salt cravings. I go through A1 sauce, Franks Red Hot, pesto and salad dressings like crazy. Need a bag of Spicy Sweet Doritos NOW!

Some other general effects I've had:

Scalp hair seems thicker, fuller, although I had little to no balding before HRT.

My sex drive has definitely changed. The physical desire for sex is much less prominent, but I'm still capable, although it now takes more focus and desire for it to work.

My testicles have shrank quite noticeably, and semen is now clear and less in volume.

My arm hair, leg hair, and body hair has lightened a bit, and grows more slowly.

I've had emotional changes, but mainly for the better. I feel more stable, more calm, and I feel emotions more powerfully but mostly in a good way. I'm also the happiest I've been in my life pretty much.

As far as dosage I'm on - I know we're not allowed to say specific amounts, so basically I'm on an average dosage. Not low dose, not high dose, just middle of the road. Right now I'm taking spironolactone and sublingual estradiol tablets. My endo agreed to switch me to injections soon (this month), so I'll be seeing how that changes things. Hopefully for the better, although it's already going well. It's just annoying to take sublingual doses every 6 hours. I'd rather just give myself a shot every week.

I have super powers now.

*levitates*

No, but seriously my color vision is better, my sense of taste has been greatly enhanced and can cook tastier things, my sense of smell is more acute and I have become more tactile.  I still have zero sense of direction though.  Also, I was never very verbal and found writing to be tedious before.  Now my full vocabulary is readily accessible and I found I love writing.  I used to be relatively cold and emotionless, but now I'm very compassionate and can cry at the drop of a hat. (Please, no hat dropping...)  It's amazing what happens when your brain finally gets the right fuel to run on.

Surprising effects . Hmm.

Color perception changes and goes up so that red looks really nice.  Flowers look better.

A non existant interest in cooking changes to an interest of sorts.

Sex changed a lot.  wait a sec thats the point isnt it

Kidding.  But not kidding about this - female, intense sexual pleasure and nerve endings.  Dream come true.

Loss of being insanely driven.  Finally able to concentrate for longer periods of time.

And now I only have to shave body hair after 48 hours.  It used to last about 4 hours.

Thats my fun stuff.

It seems that you have had some very nice changes. That is good for you & good to see. For myself at 6 months. Body hair has definetly slowed down. Facial hair maybe some slower. Breasts are growing, a B cup, just today some new bra's, playtex 18 hour, they feel great. Completion is definetly smoother. Testicles definetly shrinking which is great, much less tension or aggression. I'm very calm & feel so nice. I've had a good cry or two about small things so that is new for me. All & all I feel great so far. It is so nice to feel more like a normal person, a nice woman.     I feel so good I'm trying to schedule asap face & neck lift plastic surgery. That wil be so nice to improve my face as feminine as possible.

I expected my biggest surprises, but they still caught me off guard:

Emotions--I expected emotional changes but wow, are they more intense than I thought! I was much different watching Downton Abbey this year than last year. I also found myself empathizing more with the female characters whereas before I was indifferent. And the pouty days -- forget about it. I also found my emotional swings to be cyclical. The g/f is the one who pointed out "my time of the month."

Upper Body Strength--I knew I would lose some but it's been more than I expected and really hit home the first time I tried to open a jar of smuckers.

Soft Skin--I know my skin would get softer but never anticipated its effects. I get colder easier and am much more sensitive to touch (both good, like when the g/f touches me, and bad, like when the cat kneads my chest. Ouch!).

Even so, I'm loving every minute of it :).

I'm 3 months, 2 weeks and a few days in. It should be noted that I'm xxy, and have always had somewhat of a feminine body shape and small delicate features.

One of my biggest changes is with my hair. I had a feminine hair loss issue before hrt which halted abruptly on my 3rd day, and began reversing. I now have much more hair in these areas and continue to get new growth. Overall my hair has become thicker but softer, and is growing very fast.

Next is my boobs. Being that I'm 49 I had a fear of not getting nice round feminine looking breasts. Oh how I was wrong. My boobs are coming in nicely and are round and though still small, beautiful and very feminine. My nipples are more sensitive and overall my boobs are sore as hell, which means they're still growing. I'm tiny and my biological Mom didn't have very big breasts, so realistically I only expect a full B cup eventually.

My feet, my feet have shrunk and I'm now in a size 8 womans narrow down from a size 10 womans. I seem to be getting my arches back even though both feet were broken in my 91 accident and I lost alot of my arches. Hrt is bringing them back, YaY!

Weight loss and body changes. I seem to be losing weight again. I'm now at 117 at a height of 5-5, which is a good weight for my tiny bone structure. I have very long legs for a person of my height. And though I've always had hips they're now more feminine and my waist has gotten smaller. Likewise though I always had narrow shoulders they have now become more feminine in shape. Also my posture is improving and becoming more feminine.

Skin and body hair. I was never very hairy being Native American. However what little body hair I did have hrt has now erased. I have my own lasers and IPL device for hair removal which, has become much more effective on my face and bikini area due to hrt. My remaining leg and arm hair has become very fine almost velus in appearance. Shaving my legs once per week is all that's required. I never had underarm hair so this area's not been an issue with the exception of my underarms becoming very soft to the touch. Overall my skin has become much softer and my pores have shrank considerably. I continue to treat my face with my lasers and IPL once per week, and now only have sparse but very soft gray hairs on my face. In fact, I can make things worse on my face by shaving due to irritation from the razor.

And last, my face and voice. Overall my face has finally started to change and fill in. My skin on my face has become softer same with that on my neck. However due to my age a face/necklift may still be in order. As to my voice, though I haven't, my friends have noticed my voice has raised in pitch a little. I only believe them because now when I have to speak in stores at the checkout after being gendered correctly as female, I get no more funny looks and continue to be gendered correctly. I consider this a miracle because from what I've read hrt has no effect on your voice. Well, it seems in some rare cases it does. However I'm still going ahead with my VFS (Voice Feminization Surgery) when the time is right.

Well there it is so far. For my age I'm very happy with the results of my hrt so far, and because these changes are ongoing I look very much forward to the future and my eventual SRS. I feel 30 years younger, have more energy than I've had in years, and wake up each morning looking forward to each day.

If I get a full B cup I will be esctatic.

Girls,
All I can say is WOW! You are making awesome progress.

I'm waiting on a call from my endo (my therapist took care of everything) o schedule my first appt. I'll be starting HRT soon and if I fare half as well as you ladies, I'll be doing the happy dance!

What do you think my chances are at 40?

Wow! I REALLY envy you the facial hair and voice; both of those were excruciating and took *forever* to get fixed up for me.

The main "surprising" effects, I'd have to say, were visible breast growth and bouncing and soreness by day 5, and the fact that my feet are now about a half size to a size smaller (all the cute shoes I bought pre-transition don't fit, darnit!). I think all the rest was expected and arrived roughly on the expected timeline.

Melanie : Personally, I think that age doesn't matter, within reason. :) We get what we would have gotten... just maybe slower at a really advanced age, but it'll still get there. (Except for the awful fact that later in life testosterone has another chance to permanently change the facial *bones,* which later HRT won't fix.) I started at 32 and haven't been misgendered since six months into it.

I noticed a lot of effects within the first month, but now nothing. My nipples were very sensitive, but now they are not bad at all. I had to wear a sports bra to protect them, but I find now I'm find without one. It is like one step forward then one step back. :(

Yet, to stop whining about the lack of effects of HRT, I'll share my most surprising effect. My sense of smell has gotten a lot more sensitive. I notice odors that I have never smelt before and the ones I use to smell are now stronger. I love it! I burn my oils more frequently now because they are so much more enjoyable. :) Also, since my sense of smell changed my sense of taste has also changed. Food just has a lot more flavor now. Chocolate melting in my mouth feels better then sex!

Well, I'm 49 Melanie and you've read my changes above at 3 months, 2 weeks, & 4 days in. I'd say your chances are excellent. Just wait until you feel the energy surge that happened to me about 3 days in. You'll feel young again despite your age.

I don't know if I'd call it that, lol! I think in my case I have my extra x chromasome to thank for holding my feminine features through the years and why my hrt has been going so well even though I'm only 3 months, 2 weeks, and 4 days in. However I have seen phenominal transformations of girls in their 40's. So unless you currently look like Shrek, lol!, don't worry you'll have great results. Just remember when your older the "mones" sometimes take a little longer to do their thing. Alot of it comes down to your genetical makeup. Your Endo will adjust your dosage after three months or so after your first bloodwork. I will tell you this, my boobs started getting sore after the first week, and them getting bumped in any way will make you jump back quickly. It's an awesome feeling though because this means they're growing. In fact, I have a 64 year old TG best friend who's been on hrt just a few days longer than I, and she already fills out a C cup nicely.

My endocrinologist was scare about my liver so my dosage went up very slowly. Every time the dosage went up I got a 2 weeks blitz. 2 weeks with plenty of bad side effects and pain in my butt/breast, having greasy hair and acne. Then everytime after this 2 weeks I looked more and more like a girl.
In my case very very low doses my breast started to grow and on half doses I wasn't able to gain weight whatever i ate. Now on full dose my hips has gained few inchs and my waist got a little thinner. My face has become very feminine over time and my neck hair has become blond and short.

Everybody seem to get different results.

For the aggressivity and rush-hour in my case it stopped when my hormones became stable. Some seem to stay like this forever :) .

Oh I'm just a happy go lucky driver now. Never speeding or getting in a hurry. I make sure I leave the house in plenty of time to get where I'm going. Another thing, When I was young I used to enjoy going for a lesurely drive, however ovjuser the years I'd grown to hate driving and traffic. Now I noticed how much I now enjoy driving again. Which, I must admit I find quite pleasing to say the least. My hrt has calmed me considerably with regard to other people. Oh I'm still a little ball of restlessness who has a hard time sitting still or at idle, but I'm much more accepting of the people around me. :icon_flower:

As far as my SciFi and horror Movies I still love watching them and do so. In addition I still loooove building my own gaming computers and am about to assemble my fastest yet. I'm an active Star Wars: The Old Republic online RPG player and play whenever I can, I still love my 21 foot bass boat & bass fishing, and my 8" lifted 97 Ram ext. cab 2500 truck with a V10 running on 37's (you should see the looks I get when lil ole me steps down out of my truck at the boat ramp, gotta luv it!). But likewise I am very emotional, looooove shopping, shoes, pink, purple, summer dresses, cami's, shorts that show off my legs, gossipping, girl talk, Love Stories/movies, my collection of dangler earrings which I love wearing along with other jewlry and accessories, a good mani/petti, getting my hair done, and just being a girl. I try not to let society's stereotypes dictate to me what I should like and dislike, or do and can't do just because I'm a 5-5, 117 lb girl.

Coincidence or just the death of horror in Australia at the moment, (hopefully someone resurrects it soon). As with societies rules about what one should do for their gender or age. I also reacted straight away to hrt... soreness within 2 days.. I actually matched my mothers breast size.. a D cup, but I do wear a 36 band, where my mother wears a 34.  There are aunts in the family with bigger, so i may got some of genetics from there.

I also reacted straight away to hrt... soreness within 2 days.. I actually matched my mothers breast size.. a D cup, but I do wear a 36 band, where my mother wears a 34.  There are aunts in the family with bigger, so i may got some of genetics from there.
What worries me is my biological Mom was only a B cup (32-B), so I may not be too endowed in the bewb department. Mine are sore and coming in nicely -round and very feminine, however they don't stick out too much. I massage them twice daily as well. Helps with the soreness. :icon_flower:

I have a totally dry orgasm now :) .

I have long periods of pleasantness; I think it is 70% of the time.

I don't typically volunteer this information, but I guess this is one of the few areas where it's OK to.

At about the 2 month mark right now, and now when I orgasm it comes out almost totally clear, much more runny, and it has been steadily decreasing in volume. Sort of like how it started when I hit puberty, but in reverse and way faster. I've also had a rather dramatic reduction in testicle size (they were pretty big before, now they're 3/5 the size or maybe 1/2 the size, which has made me less dysphoric about them)

I also feel pleasant almost all the time, pretty much for the first time in my life. I finally feel like my life is on track and I'm holding the reigns.

Well, girls, I didn't realise how much, er, traffic, my comment on driving and road rage would get!  As long as none of you were messaging from a traffic jam  ;D

I truly would welcome HRT making me a bit more placid and less aggressive in the traffic.  I've lived in a few cities, and Madrid is really one of the European cities with the most aggressive drivers.  Plus, I am always rushing... From work, in boy mode (urgh - can't wait for this to end!), zipping through the cars to get home... 30 mins at home to rescue the girl and make her look pretty and then out to do chores or see friends or whatever...

Maybe I need to take up yoga (or yoghurt?)

One thing I've noticed lately is that I no longer scare children.  I used to go to the grocery store and little kids would look at me and start crying.  Now they smile at me.  Didn't see that one coming.

Sorry Jill, but I had a good laugh at this!  Although, seeing that drivers licence pic you posted as your avatar the other day I kinda get why...  :)

Being very tall and with not much hair I think I used to look pretty scary too, especially when I had my grumpy face on.

More noticeable blueish-green veins on the muscle 'karate chop' side of hands.

Veins on top of feet showing more prominently also.

Saw a news photo of George Clooney and wondered what it would be like to be taken cared of and, and ....

No. Wait! i'm not straight! What the hell??????????????????????????????????  :-\

I'm in this because I make a much better looking androgynous-fem human vs an average looking male. I am extremely vain (part Korean after all  :D)

Plus HRT has vastly improved my skin and hair situation.

I am not mentally trans.

But the HRT effect on my sexuality is, ehhm, palpable.

The only effect that surprised me was my calf muscles, I knew that muscle mass would drop but never realised how much my calves would ache when walking for more than 15 minutes (or within seconds on long flights of stairs).
Before HRT I wouldn't think twice about walking for an hour or more, nowdays I use buses more & more.

It's got to be the emotions that come out of nowhere (at least not in my previous 60 years of living), and carry me away.
And they can reduce me to a puddle of tears in short order, or send my head into total bliss.
Tempered with the knowledge that I was never much in the manly man department, I have to say that my emotions are in a state of truce.  Calm down, each side gets it's fair share to time and attention.  The weak male part doesn't want to let go, but often loses because the female part is too quick.
That's the easy stuff.
The hard stuff is conducting oneself out in public.  I don't look like a woman, so I have to watch the giggles and batting eyelashes stuff.  Upsetting others is not something I want to be doing.  Making them smile & laugh, no problem.

It seems like the neurons that rub together to form words are turning into word ninjas. (writing vocabulary and words I've forgotten are coming to fore more readily)

Beard shadow becoming more pronounced. Ugh. And it's a close shave.

Welp. Seems like my little army has lost their marching orders. Semen running clear. I'm actually not sure how I feel about this. I'm killing them!!

Temple hairline starting to show more regrowth.

Skin getting that freakishly asian pale-yellow glow.

Is it creepy to like the way you 'smell'? Things sure seem different.

Oh yeah, lost interest in video games.

And so the confustication continues on...

My hair in my problem areas continues to fill in, and overall it's growing like a weed! I had my dead ends cut off and a reshaping around a month ago, and my hairs length has shot down 3 inches in just 1 month -still healthier than it's ever been and no split ends. In addition my face is finally filling in and has a softer appearance I hope continues. My right boob is bigger than my left one, but both are very sore. Myself and my SO hugged tightly the other day and we hurt each other's boobs, lol! (it's her monthly time). As we hugged we're both yelling owe! owe! owe! owe! laughing at the same time, and we both just cracked up laughing about it afterward for over 5 minutes. :eusa_dance:

I know HRT will affect hair growth (legs, arms, etc but not beard), and skin (softer, etc) but what will it do for my legs and shaving?  Being on herbals for the last 7mos, I got the fat redistro'd fine.. on hips, butt and legs (thighs getting larger, thigh gap workin') but they still -look- like guys legs, just shapelier.. when (if) I get switched to real/script hormones, will leg skin get smoother also? I don't have blemishes on them, but they are just pathetic looking, even after shaving.. and whats with these lil red bumps, ugh!!.  Granted, they probably need some real Sun on them to darken up a bit but does HRT help make them "look" more feminine?

I haven't really noticed a whole lot of changes since I started, although I've only been on hormones for about 2 weeks. However, my breasts have grown and I seem to have anywhere from dull throbbing pain in the chest region to some pretty sharp pains. I noticed that my body hair takes a little longer to grow back, not a whole lot longer, but it's nice not to have to shave there every day. In terms of mental effects, I'm a lot calmer - I use to get really anxious, so I'm glad that stopped. For the most part I've just been sitting back and enjoying the ride, you know business as usual ;)

The difference between proper hrt meds and herbals is night and day. In fact, for most girls herbals really just, well, don't work, period. As with all medicines you need to consult your Primary Care physician, and get a referral to an Endochronologist or OBGYN with transgender experience. You'll also need a therapist who has Transgender experience. However, the Endo or OBGYN can get you started on hrt, and monitor you in order to adjust your meds if necessary.

Best wishes.

If you noticed I said with MOST girls herbals don't work. No "battle" wanted nor intended. I never tried them though I was tempted a few times over the years. I'm happy to hear you've got access to great specialists. To answer your question yes, hrt will change how your legs look to a more feminine appearance, and soften your skin.

Again I wish you the very best.

I'm sorry.. I do apologize, I didn't mean to sound antagonistic, I just am tired of being told they don't work, wasting time, money, etc.. sorry.. really.. but no, they are not all the same.  Some work, some don't.. depends on the body chemistry.  They worked well for me with no side effects.  But my therapist and endo can not work with herbals.. so that's why I'm switching to the script based drug hormones.

Thank you for the answer tho.  I know you and others are just looking out for us.

I am 6 weeks into HRT. Took initial measurements at three weeks. Took them again yesterday. In the three weeks, I gained 1.5 inches around my chest and both thighs. Half and inch gain for my calf measurements. Zero changes for neck, hips, arms and waist. How can I gain inches but lose two pounds in weight?  ???  ;D Muscle loss can't happen this quickly.

My biggest surprise is that I am a big sleepyhead now. I wake up in the morning with a big smile on my face after a long night's sleep. This would have never happened when I had a bad case of dysphoria. What is also strange is that, outside of losing my dysphoria, I have not felt many mental/emotional changes other than a greater happiness.

Surprising effects of HRT
I have totally mentally feminized..
I swear I don't remember how I used to be.. I ask people when they say I am totally different and they just say I had a wall up and used to be hard to talk to.. now most friends wonder why I seem so happy now.
I have not been on long but despite losing a ton of weight my butt is getting bigger.. I am actually worried a little about it.

Ok, I notice what women wear all the time!!
Biggest surprise for me is how men intimidate me now.. especially when several are together being dudes.. Men seem so manly now.. its weird.
For example I was getting new pipes on my sports car.. several dudes standing there when I walk in and I just felt they were sizing me up for no reason.. I felt paranoid.. I think its just part of the deal.

I am shocked at how easy I find it is to slide into the sisterhood. Mannerisms, walking, movement, general awareness, a sense of femininity, knowing what to talk about and being sensitive to other people's feelings and moods, and a budding fashion sense  - its a work in progress but I'm finding that it comes naturally to me. I cannot shut up to save my life now, and before HRT you couldn't get 3 words out of me. Writing? I can and do write long letters now! My poor mom is the recipient of most of them

Body changes..... boobs are happening albeit slowly, I always got comments about having a "nice butt" as a boy and I am now getting unwanted attention from it as a girl from random guys. Hair regrowth sadly is not happening - its too far gone. Facial changes? Yes, still happening.  Hands and feet are smaller, and I seem to be a bit shorter these days too. No one pays me any attention when I'm out and about these days.

The main difference I've noticed by far is that i'm happy now!

I was delightfully surprised of suddenly having no acne. Before HRT it was quite the problem, nothing I could do would get rid of it completely. Now a pimple is a pretty rare occurrence.

I'd have to say the emotions are a big one too. I expected them to change, but never did I imagine they would have such a big impact on me. I'm loving every minute of it.

My wife hates me getting weepy over some movie, she came upstairs couple weeks ago to find me crying over some scene in To Sir, With Love..  She turned and stalked back out.  And it happens all the time.  She's disgusted that I started watching Say Yes To The Dress with her.  I'd been on herbals since Oct and while not stunning results, they were enough to make me noticed my almost Bs and better skin.  The mood changes is what really got me, tho!

I stopped my doses two weeks ago (agreed to revert for the family), my mood has def begun to change back, and I'm getting much more acne now, chin, chest, and shoulders.. I'm really hating that.

In a complete 180 from my momentary George Clooney swooning a week ago, I've returned back to normalcy feeling contempt for men in general.

If they all suddenly disappeared from mother Earth, I'd be pretty happy.

Violent, gross, aggressive, smelly pits, dog breath, dirty socks, farty, crude, a vicious controlling a**hole of a gender. I don't understand why a butterfly would want to land on such a greasy primate. Ugh!

As far as a new surprising effect, it seems my cuticles have retracted slightly showing longer nail beds.

Here's a new one...

I noticed my spacial awareness (say when walking) has shifted. Before I literally had eyes in the back of my head and was exceptionally aware of my surroundings. Always checking those corners and intensely scanning for two legged pests. I live in the city after all. After being on E, I seem to have tunnel vision now. It's like my senses are entirely focused on what's in front of me only and my peripheral sense has been diminished.

What the hell.

You'd think a woman's perception would only increase to look out for danger to herself and her young.

Anyway it's obviously not a good thing, so I'm going to have re-address that with renewed training.

Anyway it's obviously not a good thing, so I'm going to have re-address that with renewed training.
That's strange, for me it's just the opposite. I catch myself scanning my periphrial vision more and taking detailed account of my surroundings and anyone within a 7-10 foot radius of me. If there's a potential threat or danger I want to see it coming in order to avoid it if possible.

People at work now say that, somehow, I look different, but they are not sure what it is that makes me look different.

Also, muscle mass especially in the upper body is way down. My chest has lost 4 inches and my upper arms and forearms are much thinner.

Fat is accumulating on my hips and thighs. My thighs jiggle almost as much as the fat on my rear up by the iliac crest and down to slightly below my hip joint. I seem to have a slight swivel in my hips when I walk. I am not forcing this, I just sway naturally. When one foot goes forward, my hip on that side shifts ever so slightly forward and my foot swings slightly inward. In the next step, it happens to the other side.

My belt is 6 inches smaller and my pants are loose in the waist but not in the thighs or seat. I am dieting like crazy!

I did not even mention my breasts, but I expected that!    ;D

I've been on hormones for two and a half months. Not a single change. Not inside or out.

Bad genes I guess.

Listen to James; I've been on HRT for a year now and only in the past three months have I REALLY seen my body go through some dramatic changes. Like many have said the Endos like to steadily up your dosage from practically nothing and on top of that some of us are late bloomers  :)

Has anyone noticed a change in their sense of smell?

I've always been good at noting and identifying odours , but in the past few weeks I have particularly noticed that I am much more sensitive to how men smell...!!!   Some smell horrendous; others very, very masculine.

Since I did have boyfriends before transitioning, I'm quite used to how men smell - this is very much stronger!

Oh, but nothing compares to this bartender at a Japanese restaurant I frequent.  I went to college with a bunch of meathead football players on steroids (literally) and I thought they smelled bad then.  I got a whiff of that meathead and I almost upchucked my Sapporo Light.

It's funny, my wife always thought my scent was "off" or "odd" before I went on HRT.  Is there something about MTFs and testosterone that makes us smell funny?

In the past month I've had a really odd effect to e that I hadn't heard of before. The skin on the bottom of my feet really dried out. I was expecting dry skin but I wasn't expecting this. After drying it got really tough and itchy for a week and then the top layer of skin started flaking off.  These were like inch long skin flakes.  All the new skin is mich softer, a more pink color, and more sensitive then my feet used to be.

It only happened to the bottom of my feet, but its made me feel a bit like a snake shedding its old skin.

That sounds wonderful! I hope this happens to me too! But then the rational part of my brain tells me that it could also be the results of proper hydration, more active lifestyle, and better diet...
But I'll cross my fingers hoping it really is the hormones that can do this (:

Anyone else notice this benefit?

I think I can see the veins in my hands and lower arms more. I used to only notice them when they were raised, but now I can see them fairly clearly pretty much every time I decide to look. Especially my wrists. I could be imagining it. Could be related to getting a lot more exercise now? I have started cycling again, going from little activity to around an hour cycling a day. I could also be imagining this, but my bicycle seat seems to irritate in different places. It's kind of like I'm starting to sit 'around' the seat rather than 'on' it. Haven't ridden it in about 7 months and its 5 months HRT this Friday (aka, today :) )

You know that's probably it. When I first went full time for about 3-6 months I was a little tunnel visioned. I just focussed on what was ahead of me cause I didn't want to know what kind of looks I may or may not be getting, if you know what I mean. But once my confidence grew I was back to my overly self aware self. You'll figure it out Evelyn.

My taste buds have changed 0_0 dramatically. 23 years of hating blue cheese, black olives, pickles, and all things salad. Now I can't have enough of em :P

I'm always.freezing.my.ass.off. I use to keep my house at 70 degrees, now I can't have it lower than 77 because at 76 im shivering.

But the most surprising effect has been skin glow. My skin actually glistens now even in the faintest light, its almost like I'm a twilight vampire (lame -_- lol) and I actually TAN... I use to BURN like an albino, now my skin actually tans instead of getting bright red and burnt.

Also; genetic hypertension seems to have disappeared. So technically speaking, E saved my heart lol

The softness of my skin was the first change I noticed, and as my skin became smoother and softer, so did I. There has been a wonderful transformation of both my body and my soul. I have become better able to live life as it unfolds and less anxious about the future and less critical of others with whom I disagree. And for that as much as for my physical change I am grateful.

But I am a A cup a;ready and very much aware of them. I will be happy to reach a B and love iy if I made it to a C cup. Mother is a C, daughters a a D and a DD. I too love all the other changes too slower facial hair growth, softer skin, rounder behind.

OMG this is probably one of the biggest changes!! I recently wore some capris and as I was putting on my sandals I noticed that my ankle was really bruised....apparently I sprained my ankle...fairly bad also from the appearance. All I can recall is twisting it a bit on an uneven surface about a week ago, I didn't think much of it.

Smell is a big one for me, I never noticed the smell of men until now, and boys going through puberty is even worse (I have 3 boys) I have become accustomed to the smell now and the times I am not with a man I kind of reminisce about the smell.....even though it is a strange and indifferent smell.

Other very noticeable changes on almost 4 years HRT are:

Dry orgasms

testes receded back into cavity

leg hair almost obsolete

Cold all the time (though have other issues concerning that)

nails break easier, though never ever grew them out before

Skin is much softer, though I am so use to it now...but I am constantly moisturizing cause it dries out so quickly

Height and feet shrunk 5'7 1/2 before now 5'6 1/2.... feet were mens 8 now there womens 8 to 8 1/2

boobs...ya duh!! I got them, they jiggle, nipples are always present...one of the main reasons I wear a bra and I also feel their presence when walking up or down stairs!!

Often ignored, or viewed as unintelligent...not from HRT unfortunately just a women thing!

Oh and the biggest change is that before I was a skinny weak male often asked if I was ill.....but now a female that is viewed as petite and somewhat attractive....never viewed as sickly. One of the prejudice's I don't miss!!

Another thing that probably isn't hrt related, but...who knows....is my third sense of noticing just how stupid men can be. Just today I witnessed a man being asked by his wife why he had some rope in the shopping cart, his reply was that he was going to make a home made gym....my thought matched her look on her face to a tee. "Ya sure like that's going to happen"LOL

I suddenly feel very sorry for my wife and kids (2 girls)..

When we go on vacation, I used to run the room Ac to.. like.. 62degrees... full cold... you sleep better when it's cooler.. anyway.. they would always complain that it was an icebox in the room.. I mean, you could almost hang meat it there.. you couldn't quite see your breath.. but only just..   but now.. I suddenly have a muuuuuch smaller temperature window that feels good..  like... 72F-75F..  I tried running the AC cold when I'm alone in the hotel rooms, but it is really cold now..  Honey, kids.. I am sooo sorry, I didn't know... NOW I get it!!

I'm actually from this area of the Country as I was born on a reservation strattling the Nevada/Cali border. I loooove those dry warm temperatures much better than the hot sticky humidity I live in now. If it weren't for the fishing down here, I'd move back out west in a heartbeat. I'm selling my house to move further south for better fishing and to be closer to the only two true friends I have that live somewhat close. But who knows, I may still move back home before it's all over with. You can take the Native American out of the desert, but you can't take the desert out of the Native American.

Once your on hrt and your boobies start growing they are no longer "moobs." They're "breasts," "boobs," -anything but "moobs." You have breasts girl. They'll be sore most of the time and they're only gonna get bigger so, you might have to alter a few habits, lol! I've had to change a lot concerning how I do things because even brushing my arm across mine lets me know they're there in a big way. Just hugging my girlfriend a couple of days ago hurt like hell as we're both the same height with similar builds -you get the idea, lol!

Actually, mine had stabilised in size and stopped being sore for six months.  Then in March, I switched over to pellet, and they've grown again.  Hurt like heck when my kids head butt me in the chest.  (And my youngest one keeps going for nipple cripples).

Not planning on transition so my endo and I have some work ahead to tweak things.  HRT has been great for my mood  but we're trying to control the degree of feminisation.  I'm an experiment in progress.  :)

I wish I could switch over to pellets. I am in full transition and at the moment I'm taking orals. My body has always had a feminine shape, which my hrt has enhanced. However I'm very unhappy with my facial  and breast development. Though my face is small, I have the body of a woman and a face with too many masculine features. I pass everywhere I go, but I feel that's mostly due to my body having a feminine shape. Cause it certainly isn't because of my face. Also in the breast department while I do have some development and they are sore, it isn't much. Maybe I just need more time idk. But I do feel that the pellets would give me better feminization results than the orals I'm currently taking.

1 : Total loss of sexual desire

2 : Extreme vanity

I have been on a roller coaster in the 3 1/2 years of HRT using the Spiro component and some of the effects coming back on are similar as first used. At first there was the breast tenderness at 2 1/2 weeks on E and Spiro with some tenderness and a little pain.  That has not occured this second time, but the breasts are getting close to the size before coming back on Spiro.  The Spiro was removed for 6 months with the E still being taken due to the flushing of the sodium and the other kidney items plus the pain relievers used for the peripheral neuropathy.  The T level went up as well as my PSA (prostate) reading shot up.
Both times, the usual body hair and beard thinning after one month.  Softness of the skin and with the soles of the feet more evident this time after using the Lamisil, an antifungal pill used.  About 35 years with the fungus on the soles of the feet misdiagnosed and after one month on the stuff, fungus and callouses gone.  Both times, yet, the increase of muscle mass and body strength.  My doc says that is unusual, but not unheard of.  This after another winter in bed in pain.  The pain relievers stopped working.  The gardening, the large 1 ton telescope mount repair, and today with the digging around the foundations of the out buildings at my club's site for rodent abatement.  All of these help with the recuperation.  The guys at the site were keeping up with me today!  We are in the same age group, 60's.

This one is odd.

Picked up the game controller today for the 1st time in several months and jumped right into the new Tomb Raider 2013. As Lara faced her struggles with the inhabitant scourge of the island (you know, enraged feral men) I couldn't help but feel a completely riveting sense of urgency to dispatch the cancers affronting her, as hard as I can, and subsequent elation at seeing her through to survival. Before it was ho-hum. Now it was like a total embodying experience. Seeing her move, her curves and body shape, her femininity and her vulnerability. I was in, "girl power!" HRT euphoria the whole time. Just in love with her, not amorously, but as one of my own. As a sister. Or as even me....

The sweet-and-sour irony is - her character was visualized by men, which brought me back to reality. :(

But still, Evelyn can dream, can I?

She might of been visualised by men. But what I like about the character is. Although shes stands as an ideal woman visually.

She stands as a role model, in this latest game.

Shes not week
Shes not scarred to get dirty
She doesnt need help all the time.
She is better suited to what she does than a man. Because of WHO she is.

But to some degree yeah. I suppose it can be looked at like this new TR isnt just a mans portrayal of ideal looks but the "sexy" personality too. sad when it hits you.

The most surprising change for me from the physical point of view is that my face changed considerably. Even my therapist gave me a surprised stare when he saw me 54 days after the first estrogen injection. Then again I looked like a copy of my older sister before the first puberty which fortunately didn't do much damage.

From the psychological point of view I actually started to love life, myself and my body (with the exception of the mess between my legs of course). I didn't expect that so soon and as a sudden change which was what surprised me. Not to mention the flood of emotions I didn't know before as before I was pretty much as emotional as a block of ice.

The last surprise from rather social point of view is that just after month and a half I started to be nearly 100% gendered as a woman. Besides that being surprise on it's own it had incredible effect on my self-confidence.

It's a bit of irony. HRT seems to do incredible job on me and given my crappy eye-sight I can't really appreciate it myself. But I don't mind that since I'm recognized as a woman which I feel to be and what I see is good enough for me :-) .

EDIT: And yes, I do feel very lucky. And kind of sad that a lot seem to have to wait much longer.

Ohhhh Nooo I'm shrinking!! -Sorry Evelyn, I couldn't resist, lol!!

I've actually gained a 1/2 inch or so due to hrt's remodeling my posture a bit. My accident in 91 left me with the inability to completely stand up straight. As a result I always walked a little stooped forward. Now it seems due to my mid and lower back's arching inward I'm standing up straight again. YaY for small miracles!!

I had a lot of changes in the first two months but nothing the next two and half months.

My mood also went back in depression which I'm guessing is because I'm not noticing anything.

It seems like you are getting good results!

For me, I am 3 weeks into a mix of Estradiol Valerate and micronized progesterone.  I really don't want to take anti-androgens unless it becomes absolutely necessary.

My nipples started "staying at attention" just 3 DAYS into the hormones!!!  After 3 weeks, my nipples protrude noticeably when I pulled my shirt tightly against my chest.

I think my breasts are a little rounder than 3 weeks ago, but the change is gradual.  I am happy with the changes so far.

Emotionally, I feel TRANQUIL.  I don't have mood swings so far.  Really, I just feel calmer about life.  Even tough situations I seem to be able to handle more calmly than 3 weeks ago.  I am somewhat AMAZED at this happening to me so fast.

Hey, I have a STRONG desire to continue with this every days.  I am SO happy with these hormones.  The micronized progesterone makes me a little sleepy I think, so I only tkae this at bedtime.  The sleepiness effect only seems to last for a couple of hours, though.

I don't feel what I would call SEVERE problems with being a male, but I LOVE these hormones!!!!  I DEFINITELY don't want to stop them.

I want to continue for at least 3 months to see where this takes me.

I would like at least a 38A so that I can still WORK as a male, but, hey, if I get to 38B at some  point I can learn to deal with it.  38B may be a little hard to hide for male work purposes.  I think I probably could hide 38A with loose shirts working as a male.

Probably the most surprising effect was what it's been doing to my eyes.

My eyes used to be sorta a muddled green-blue, almost splotchy with the colors. At the 5 month mark I noticed that my eyes had changed completely. All the green in them disappeared, and instead the blue became much more prevalent. What I have now are these pretty blue-gray eyes, they look kinda cold too. The other thing I've noticed with my eyes, is I have a condition known as strabismus (for those who don't know, it means my eyes don't exactly align... it's really not noticeable, but it results in me having absolutely no stereovision (which makes learning to drive suck ass... and the main reason I haven't gotten my Drivers License despite being in my early 20s, and watching 3D movies is a no go... although I can sometimes play my 3DS ^^) Anyways, I could be imagining this, but I feel like I've been getting less double vision recently, which could be indicative of a number of things~<3

The other thing that surprised me, is just how much my sense of smell has altered... I mean it's like, I used to sometimes notice smells before HRT... but now it's like, almost almost a constant thing. We were cooking curry last night from scratch, I was so overwhelmed by sensation that I almost started crying.

Other than, how different uh... intimacy... feels now really caught me off guard. Also my sex drive dropped like a rock, which I expected, but then it came back with a grudge.

Oh right, and freckles. I've got so many freckles now. Like, I've got an entire chain of them going from one cheek to the other across my nose. x3 I love them, I think they look adorable!

Interesting the eye color change, and cool too. I used to loooove Actress Meg Foster's cool almost gray eyes. It's like they bore through to your soul. I'm not sure if that's the color yours have gone, but it would be cool if it were.

I haven't had much of a sense of smell change. And I still don't have much of a sex drive. Yea I get a little warm down there when I see a girl I like, but that's as far as it goes.

Now the freckles, that I can relate too. Though I'm Native American and dark skinned I've noticed I've gotten freckles between my boobs! I mean, I've never had a freckle in my life. Go figure, lol!

I've got a lot of Welsh and Irish blood in me, so that is probably where the freckles are coming from. My hair is kinda getting a little bit redder than it used to be as well, used to be dirty blonde, now it's getting more of a strawberry blonde. Idk. I read a lot and did a lot of research before going on E, but it still seems like every day I wake up and it did something completely unexpected... still most of the little things have been nice so far, so I'm not complaining at all~

Oddly my toenails grow about 1/4 the speed they did prior to HRT.

Doing my nails is now a hobby.

Cars, survival techniques, knives, gear stuff are no longer on my mind - I want to do other things like folding little paper boats and filling them with potpourri, or channeling Julia Child when cooking.

LOFL!  Evie, I LOVE those JC-isms!!

My nails..  fingernails, are growing reeeeeeally fast now..  I can bite them (ik, bad habit) down, even with fingertip, or short, on Monday, and by the following Monday.. they are 1/4"..  I'm doing 10k mg of biotin every few days, so that is adding to the growth too.  I wish my hair grew as fast or even half that speed/length..  Arm and leg hair regrowth really has slowed, even with the biotin.

I have noticed, and I have to try to find the link again.. abt nail health, signs..  like vertical streaks, rounded/flatness (thumbnails are just flat in the middle, no curve, and pretty sharp corners to them..  but there are several signs in your nails that are real warnings.. just cant remember where I saw the article.

Oh, yes..  (que fanfare music)  Wednesday morning, I go for my first laser consult and treatment !!
SenzaPelo..  with recommendation for technician from one of my friends, and my therapist goes there too..   $150/session.. but.. what is beauty without pain or sacrifice??    :P

My weight/fat shift seems to have slowed, but weight has not changed much in the last 6mos.. a few lbs up/down.. still 155lb avg but I have seen several say weight gain/loss is a problem on E..  just hope I can dodge that bullet.

My eyes are hazel (brown/tan/green) but I havent not really looked closely in the last few weeks.  I did start Restasis drops a few weeks ago..  eye docs recommendation for eye film covering, and fight dry eyes while flying.  I haven't really noticed much change, but he said it is a loooong term change thing.. nothing noticable for 3-4 mos.. so, just under a month down, couple more to go before he'll see any change.

One of the best things from my visit..  I -finally- got my girl glasses!  both clear and sunglasses!!   No more Clark Kents for this girl!  Ugh, idk why i let the girls in the office steer me towards them even last year.  last month, when they said, ok, time to pick new frames, I walked right over to the girls wall, and picked a few.  I should have said, "please.. pick a couple nice pairs, that would look good on me".  They pretty much know now..   and I'm ok with that, they are super sweet to me.  They know which wall to pick from now.. even, the doc, (kinda short, smarmy guy), is ok with it.

The Emotions Dept..  def open for business!!  OMG..  I cry at sad things, I cry at happy things, I cry when I let the dog out, I cry when I get the mail, I cry because I'm not crying!!!   I just wanna know, how can a body cry sooo much and not become dehydrated??  I should look like an insect husk on the window sill !!!

I think I have noticed my fingers getting just a bit thinner..  feet a tad narrower too.. gawd i hope so!  I'm a tight size 9, better 9 1/2, and would LOVE to get down to .. heck, even an 8 1/2.  idk if feet shrink shorter, or just get thinner.. if they can shorten up..  fab!!  but eh.. I will take what I can get.. I'm only just under 11mos on hrt (2 on 'script 'mones), so I still have a long way to go.

For me when it comes to hair and nails both are growing really really fast. My nails are like little knives on the tips of my fingers and toes. And my hair is growing at a rate of a little over an inch per month. It is time for another trim though as I'm starting to get split ends. They aren't too bad yet as I only have a few, and it has been a little over 4 months since my last trim. If I get another trim soon my length can be preserved. However if I wait too long I'll lose an inch to damaged ends.

@Paula: Yes, your nails can be an indicator of how healthy you are, and that cracked, chipping, splitting, or funny colors can be an early indication of developing health problems. The health of your head hair is another but more harder to read.

Hi, Ali...I have always been blessed with great nails, even pre-HRT.

Now that my toenails are polished beautiful bright red with sparkle/glitter ALL of the time, and my fingernails usually polished sexy medium purple when I am at home, I feel truly blessed to have great healthy nails of my life, including right now.

Now, just need some more breast growth to my already-existing small female breasts and things will be "girl-great."

And, my hair is growing longer, quite nicely...

Johanna.

Despite reading countless reports that facial hair remains in place throughout HRT, the most surprising thing I had when I started HRT was to have the majority of the thicker facial hair on my upper lip and chin fall out a few months in. In most cases it did grow back a lot finer, but on the whole quite a fair amount never grew back. Makes clearing the stragglers with a Tria a lot easier.

The sensual touch afforded from softer skin was a very pleasant surprise. I have to be on my guard a lot more when my SO tries to catch me out and tickle me when I least expect it.

Having a range of emotions other than meh or anger was kind of hard to realise before HRT, but it is nice to know that there are now a range of emotions available to me. Although lately there's been a lot of tragedy and sadness in the news and I find myself having a bit of a wet eye after each news report.

Being made aware of the aroma of men and young teenaged boys was another revelation that I do not relish. At work I have to suffer a room full of men and in an office with no windows and an a/c unit that seems to only really cools recirculated air it can get quite funky sometimes.

Yes, Leila, about the emotions.

I was chatting away from Susan's with one of the gals here, and she told me she has Parkinson's Disease.  I started crying.  Wowwowowow.  I cannot believe this is happening to me.  I can FEEL and I sometimes start crying at surprising moments.

The mental changes for me, 8 weeks into HRT, continue to be even more amazing than things like my new female breasts.

I feel a euphoric happiness 90% of the time.  All of my relationships work and personal are better.

Johanna, who is now becoming FREE.

Ali, Leila, you have my "third" on this...

My former body odor problem disappeared almost completely just 3 weeks into HRT.  But now too, I have more abilities in the areas of smell and perception and feelings, and I can notice this "man" smell in others a little more.  I'm glad I don't have this "man smell" problem any longer.  I live in a hot tropical climate, so this is quite a relief for me.
