Title: Experiences with HRT and nipple piercings
Post by: apriljo on May 07, 2014, 10:21:20 PM
I was just wondering if anyone else here has had pre-existing nipple piercings before starting HRT and how that worked out for you. Did you remove them, leave them in? How were they as you grew?

I had both pierced well before starting HRT and made the bold decision that leaving them in was surely no more painful than having them pierced again. Well, I ended up rather quickly changing the rings to barbells. I found that I went through about a month or two of wondering why I hadn't taken them out yet. Things seem to have leveled off now though. I scratched one changing the piercing recently and the healing from that is all I get pain from now.

I took my piercings out about 3 months after starting HRT. It wasn't anything to do with pain, I didn't want anything to affect how my boobs grew. I still have the holes (the piercings were getting on for 10 years old) and they are the tenderest part, though only tender rather than sore.

Wow, the holes stayed? Mine are 10 and 11 year old piercings and I feel like they'd close up if I left them out for more than a day or two.

I think they are still there though I haven't tried putting any jewellery in to check.  Certainly there is evidence of the entry holes and I can feel where the passage runs through the flesh.  That said, I got my left nipple re-pierced last time as it had closed up after being left unadorned for about 3 years after having a piercing in it for about 6 years.  The re-piercing was a lot more painful as there was a fair bit a scar tissue for the needle to get through.  So if you are planning on keeping the piercings I feel it is probably best to leave the jewellery in.

I was told by the local guru to not pierce mine until they were finished growing and already had the BA if it's going to be necessary.  Too much risk of migration and asymmetry.  Seems that piercings and transchicks go together more often than you'd think.  If they're already pierced and not looking right, the best thing for long term aesthetics is to take them out and do it again later. (Ouch!)

I have been told to replace the rings with bars, that way as the nipples increase in diameter, you get less chance of migration due to the sides of the nipple following the contour of the ring. Change to a longer bar when necessary. Whether that is correct or not I do not know, but it sort of makes sense. I will find out soon enough I suppose....

The thought of taking them out and doing it again doesn't thrill me very much.

Both my nipples were pierced at least 2 yrs preHRT - they were pierced at different times.

The left side (full hoop ring, titanium) healed perfectly without issues.  Since HRT, no issues (but really only minimal breast development).

The right side (first an anodized horseshoe, replaced with my current titanium barbell) has always been abit problematic.  From the start, the healing wasn't entirely perfect - alittle crusty discharge - but it was/has never really been overtly inflamed, red, tender, warm, etc.  It got better after switching to the titanium barbell (the discharge stopped) and I figured it was officially healed.  A few months after starting HRT, it has started to discharge again, but still, no overt inflammation, pain, tenderness, redness etc.  Again - I've really only had minor breast development, but maybe the combination of this ring's placement (alittle deeper into the areola; the left side is abit more superficial, just at the base of the nipple) plus even just that minor glandular tissue is enough to start causing some irritation again.  Of course, I do wear tight shirts (cycling jerseys, tight undershirts, sports bras) so that may contribute.

I do vacillate between removing the right side and starting over; I'm fairly certain the hole will close up, and maybe I can just get repierced through the scar tissue (or maybe slightly above the scar tissue).   I personally love when you can see someone's piercings under their top, which is why I'm so resistant to taking the right side out.

I changed to a bar because of the pain actually. The rings I was wearing were being wedged between my bra and breasts and as my breasts grew they were just acting as a pry to pinch my nipple into my bra. Not sure if that makes sense, but the point is bars were better.

I had mine pierced about 5 or 6 years ago. (Barbells) Prior to HRT I ask my doctor about it (she treats a lot of MtF Patients at Callen-Lorde) and she said it should not be a problem. I might have to put longer barbells in, but that's about it. 5 months on HRT and haven't had any issues with them. They are super sensitive that is for sure. The nipples seem to be pulling in a the barbells in a little (as expected) so I probably will change them to longer ones soon.

Prior to HRT it did hurt quite a bit to get them pierced. (The right one hurt worse than the left one for me.) I would imagine it would be even more painful after HRT to get them pierced. I had my ears pierced last week and I barely felt it compared to the nipples. The piercer just had her nipples pierced and we were comparing experiences.
