"the punishment should fit the crime", i keep hearing that over and over again, but does it make sense? shouldn't the punishment fit the person instead? what is a punishment to one person is nothing to another person.
Your thoughts?
Well, when does punishment start, Katia? when the condemned feels remorse for his crime or when true punishment actually starts? I believe that the punishment should fit the crime, and it should be carried out to the maximum. If the offender is mentally ill, then this person should be committed to a sanitarium where he/she can receive appropriate treatment for his/her condition. I believe that you know my point of view on the rest, unless you'd like me to be more explicit.

Kill 'em all, let God sort 'em out, like that?
Punishment should fit the individual. Some are more worthy of punishment than others.
Some should get off.

I'll say this one more time or one more way:
you kill a person for being a killer, you become that person. It's very very very very simple.
The more horrid the crime, the bigger the punishment
I'm more of a stick and carrot type person rather than one who just carries a big stick. I've never really believed that sitting in prison for any period of time is adequate punishment neither is it effective in reforming the criminal.
I'd rather try to prevent crime in the first place. It's rather difficult to fix a person after the fact. So that's where I focus my energies and political efforts.
Have you seen that film about the kid who stole a loaf of bread so his little sister could have something to eat? He ended up in prison. He got in trouble while in prison and ended up in Alcatraz. One thing led to another and he found himself in solitary torture in the dungeons of that institution. Now that is just wrong.
There are some crimes that we may never be able to prevent of course and for that, I suppose that we'll always have the prisons.
In all cases, I believe that the perpetrator should make reparations where possible. If money is involved (white collar crime), it should be returned or paid back.

There are people who make mistakes that they will never repeat.
There are people who start along the wrong road, but are capable of finding their way.
There are people who get caught up in their circumstances like a leaf in a strong stream.
There are people who start out mean and can never be fixed.
There are people for every circumstance
There is a punishment for every person.
The punishment should fit the crime.
In my view for example; Murders, Pedophiles should get life and when I say LIFE I mean life. Not like over here (uk) They charge you with life and let you out after 8 years!!!!??!?! LIFE is LIFE not bloody 8 years.... and people turning to religion to just get out of jail should be laughed at.
The UK has a stupid system you kill a person you get Life (8 years) if you rob a bank or steal money you get a heavier charge?!?! Has the UK gone crazy?!?? Yes... Yes I believe so... and only me can help that!!... *gets off his high horse and settles down*.... ;)
I agree with you, Jaston.
Life should be life. I believe the punishment should fit the individual, but there are some crimes that kind of show that the individual is just not safe to have around.
I demand you get back on your high horse and do something about that phony life sentence!
Peace,
Rebis

The only problem with that is I am very Un-Pc like Nero. And I would probably have an up-rising on my hands :-X

Well, look at it this way Jaston dear. Perhaps they don't always find the money . . .
(friggin' very annoying indeed!) :icon_bunch:
I know..... but why have a heavier charge than murder?!? It just convuses me!? :-\
The punishment should fit the crime, not the individual. Murder is murder is murder is murder is murder is murder. If a Black kills a white, they are guilty of murder. If a White kills a white, they are guilty of murder. If you rob a store with M60s and satchel bombs, you are guilty of armed robbery. It is irrelevant of who you are or your history, the punishment must fit the crime. If you punish someone harshly for being black or MTF or whatever, that will come back to haunt your society. Look at how they treat the 'males' in custody battles; most people assume that the female should assume custody of the property/children. Does anyone here really think that punishing someone for who they are is justice? And how will you deal with the eventual blowup from that said demographic??? No one would have the power to stop it. :o
