Title: Starting therapy
Post by: Unknownfavor on May 17, 2014, 10:11:43 PM
Hey so I feel I could really benefit from seeing a therapist at the moment as I'm really on the fence for transitioning MTF, but I really don't know what to do do or if its worth it. I would have to pay for it completely out of my pocket and can afford a couple sessions but I don't think I could afford anything long term at the moment. What do you guys and gals suggest I don't even know how I would go about talking to someone about this in person, and I read a lot of previous posts that you should stay direct and on topic about the gender issues. But do you just bring it up, right up front? Should I also see a gender specialist or a regular therapist as I am on the fence still I mean this decision of transitioning or not would lead my life in two completely different career paths and would change my life A LOT. What do you guys and gals recommend?

First, if you are near a major college or University check to see if they have a Psychology Department. I found mine at Oklahoma State University. I am only charged $10.00 per session and have a true Gender Therapist. You do not even have to be a student.

I would bring up your gender issues on the first day. The reason is Gender Dysphoria can also be seen as depression, anxiety and several other issue's. My diagnosis of Gender Dysphoria and the HRT regimen I am on cleared up all the other issue's and symptoms I was showing. If they have no idea of your gender issue's it could make them incorrectly diagnose and treat you wrong. It takes guts to say it out loud to a stranger, but you will never get the help you need if you don't tell them what is bugging you. :)
