Title: Progesterone Question
Post by: Rachel on May 19, 2014, 08:36:49 PM
I am going to be 52 and been on HRT for about 1 year. I have had some great results for 1 year at my age.

I go to the Doctors in 2 weeks and I want to add progesterone to my meds. He will ask why. I will say I want a more feminine appearance and fuller breasts and hip and butt curves. :) Ok, I want to be cute.

I know there is some suicidal dilation potential with the medication. I have had much less of an issue in the past year than I have had since I was 11 years old. I really want to live. I would not have said that 1.5 years ago.  So,  I will not lie to Dusty but there is a past issue.

Am I missing something he will ask me or some other reason or health risk to deny me the medication? Should I avoid the medication. At group last week the 20 something girls were sharing meds and I am on the same dosages and meds. Should I be happy and just wait?

I'm 48 and on Progesterone, have been for six or seven months and I think has made a difference. Do't know about the suicidal angle - personally I have never been calmer. The issue will come down to whether your doctor feels it will be OK for you take it. I guess if they don't you could maybe try for a second opinion if possible.

I'm 51 and am on my 4th cycle of prometrium (the bio-identical form of progesterone). When I first started taking progesterone I had a bad headache for a solid month and I was bitchy and quick tempered. Now that I know what to expect I have tempered the bitchiness and the anger, and the headaches have mostly subsided.

Progesterone does make me moody and it makes me think weird depressive thoughts and I am working now on learning how to anticipate that and nip it in the bud. Those feelings really snuck up on me the first time and I found myself sobbing in my office in full view of anyone that passed by for no apparent reason until I figured out what was going on.

My butt is suddenly drawing unwanted attention from guys, and I noticed that my boobs have had a growth spurt recently.

I am sold on what progesterone does  :)

The suicide thing might have something to do with the synthetic stuff Medroxyprogesterone (?)

I know there is some suicidal dilation potential with the medication.

This appears to occasionally be the case with medroxyprogesterone acetate (Provera, Depot-Provera), a progestin that is not the same as bio-identical progesterone which, in some, appears to have strong anti-depressive and anti-anxiety effects while paradoxically, causing some depression in others, although never suicidal, as far as I know.

I'd suggest you ask your doctor for bio-identical progesterone ONLY. Brand name is Prometrium. Also available in suppositories (rectal/vaginal) in some parts of the world as Cyclogest.

From clinical studies on just bio-identical progesterone, it seems to be pretty harmless except for sedative effects occurring so best to take nightly before going to bed. There are always exceptions to the rule but be sure your doctor doesn't confuse other progestins with progesterone because the side-effects are VERY different. The studies have shown this, quite unequivocally.

You could always try it for awhile and see. It helps with sleep, breasts in some, improving skin/hair texture, strengthening nails. It tends to be relaxing. Can help with fat deposition and feminization. Like I said, you could always tell the doctor you want to just give it a try to see if it makes a difference and from what you've read, the side-effects are pretty minimal. It's the same hormone as what humans naturally produce.

Good luck. :)

It seems to be yet another YMMV thing.  Bioidentical is working great for me now that my body is acclimated to it, but that doesn't necessarily seem to be the case for everyone.

My suggestion is to try it for a bit, and if it is a net negative overall for you, then discontinue.  If it works, then great.

Thank you all for your reassuring and informative responses.

I hope my mileage varies on the side of fat deposition and boobies.   I am super excited now :)
