Title: name change frustration
Post by: Bombadil on May 23, 2014, 08:09:16 PM
so yesterday I got a call from my main bank that my bank card number had been stolen. we checked to make sure nothing was stolen out of my account and then they closed the bank card. even though my first name has been changed to christopher they kept calling me miss and such. I was too much of a wuss to correct it.

Today, I went to my credit card bank to change my name. I got a bit overwhelmed with name change stuff and hadn't changed it yet. when I did it with my checking bank it was a breeze. this time, the guy who was helping me kept asking for a certificate. I had handed him the court order. I figured out he was talking about social security. I said no, but this county name change and I have my driver's license with the name change. we went a few rounds like that. I said that banks do not require social security. I didn't think to say "this is a legal binding court order".

I haven't been able to change my name with social security because I don't have my birth certificate and I was born out of country. I have submitted forms to get my birth certificate but I have no idea when I will get it. I can not ask my father for it because he is not a safe person for me to be around. Since I haven't been able to change my name with social security I haven't been able to change it with work or with my medical insurance. this is a sore spot. I hate going to the doctors office and getting called my birth name.

So anyway, I was pretty darn positive he was wrong. so then I sat in my car and called the phone number on my credit card. I talked to some guy who said he'd mail be the name change form and it would get there in 7 to 10 days. I asked him what documentation I would need to provide along with the form. he said the form would tell me what I need. I said, I understand this but I'd like to get the documents before hand. he said he didn't know what I needed. I was exasperated at this point. I said, so you're telling me it's not possible for you to tell me the information written on one of your own forms? so then he asked if I was getting married. I said no, I am legally changing my name. he then said well any legal document should do but it was clear he was going to be no help with the dude in the bank so I drove away

because my main bank card number was stolen and is closed, I can't use that bank card. So if I use a card, I am being forced to use the card with birth name on it. If I write a check, it still has my birth name on it. forgot about changing those. I am so flipping frustrated. I am probably more upset over this than I should be.

Probably a stupid bank thing as US Bank at first wanted an updated driver's license but another branch was fine with just a certified copy of the court order. Capital One wanted the court order and the receipt SSA gave me when I changed things there.

I think basically the guy didn't know what he was doing. I went to a different branch and got my name changed.

However, I still haven't been able to change my name with social security. It's sort of insane but basically I'm having troubles proving I'm an american citizen. I have one old form that is a child born abroad of american parents but it's not the right form. I don't have a passport. The social security staff were nice to me today and tried to explain the next steps but honestly I'm confused. I'll look at the print out the one staff gave me when I can think better.

But this means, I can't change my name at work. And that means I can't change my name with my medical insurance. So, that's disappointing.
