Title: Regeneration...
Post by: Ms Grace on June 01, 2014, 07:45:41 AM
Met with a couple of friends and their two young children for lunch today. This was the first time I've seen them since transitioning. Anyway, their son - D# - is about six years old and a mad keen Doctor Who fan. Before meeting up, so they tell me, they tried to explain to him I was now Grace...

Them: So Grace was a woman stuck in a man's body, but now she's a grown up and can be in the body she wants to be.

D#: So she's regenerated...

(Then ensued a long conversation about how the next Dr Who should be a woman.)

Too darn cute! :D

Funny thing is I've also been thinking of my transition a bit like a regeneration too...

You know, it kind of is. I rather like that explanation.

Well I was thinking about how some of the Doctor's companions are actually present at the time the Doctor regenerates, they have to cope with a different face, dress/costume and different mannerisms (keeps his name and gender though) and how that was like the situation for people at my work place. For years they've worked with "this guy" who quite literally has transformed overnight (from their perspective) into a woman. (Personally I'm in awe of people who can take that in their stride and adapt to it, it's a lot to take in.) So yeah, it's like I regenerated (shame I didn't get the plumbing to go with it!)

There does seem to be a lack of affordable 'plumbers' and the regeneration fairy is stuck.

That's a great story! It reminds me of something I learned recently about the Clownfish (same fish as in Finding Nemo, which D# probably likes). All Clownfish start off life as males. One male and one female (the larger of the two) live in an anemone. He guards the eggs, she basically keeps him afraid to leave the anemone. BUT... if for some reason she dies, he will metamorphosize (is that a word? lol) into a female. It's a pretty amazing animal. There is a really great video about this posted on the  "Smarter Every Day" YouTube channel if you wish to learn more specifics.

Just be careful, transporters can be unpredictable.

Yes, something they sadly avoided in Finding Nemo!
