I'm also in Portland, OR. We have a doctor here in town who is also a trans woman. Her name is Sara Becker, MD. She works out of a clinic called NW Primary Care very near the Milwaukie Providence Hospital. Check out her website at "SaraBecker.com/t/index.html"; you'll find all kinds of local resources for physicians, therapists, legal support, hair removal, hair restoral, hormones, support grout meetings, etc. I have known Sara for many years. You will be in very good hands with her.

For Kaiser Permanente members in the NW region it may be advisable to have Dr. Stephanie Detlefsen manage or coordinate your transgender care. Dr Detlefsen is the guru and go to physician for NW Permanente. I also live in this area and serve on Kaiser's Transgender Champions group. I am interested in the experience of other transgender member/patients and happy to be an advocate. We have found it is important to know what your particular plan covers as some plans do not have the "transgender rider" and provide more limited care options. Stay well out there.

Funny you should say... I am a Kaiser member, and I recently met with Dr. Detlefsen after my primary physician of many years, Dr. Gundapali, left Kaiser. Dr Detlefsen is delightful; we had a lovely visit. She referred me to a Dr. Madrigal who is now my primary care doctor. In the 8 years I've been a Kaiser member, Dr. Gundapali and now Dr. Madrigal have been awesome at taking care of my health and well being as a trans woman. I feel blessed!
The medical legal landscape is changing fast as medicare, federal employee groups and other big players gain more complete and equitable coverage. Kaiser is responding internally and preparing for increased utilization of the services critical to us. How does a big medical group like this know how many transgender members they have? Not all of us who identify as TG/TS or gender non conforming are identifiable as such on a patient chart. Sometimes we have to be "out," at least to our physician, to literally count when it comes to planning. Nice to know about other trans people in the area and it was a special pride event this last Saturday when several hundred (thousands?) of us walked in the first separate Transgender Pride Parade.
I'm going to have to second Dr. Becker, as she's my doctor. Now that I have health insurance again, I need to find a PCP near Wilsonville that doesn't suck. :/
If you're interested in Naturopathic medicine Dr. Angela Carter seems to be good (I'm seeing her tomorrow for the first time actually!). She uses the informed consent model and is a huge trans advocate. Under Oregon law insurance providers are required to cover naturopathic medicine too. We've spoken on the phone and she definitely knows her stuff when it come to hormones and can write all the necessary prescriptions (and will also help with DMV letters etc). She can provide bio-identical hormones or the regular kind.
Hannah definitely let us know how Dr. Carter goes I saw her last week she is nice enough just very busy office is a bit interesting we shall see if I hear back from her today or tomorrow as I got blood drawn last Thursday wish I had done it sooner I did see Dr. Becker back and 04405 however things were different back then she tried to tell me she didn't think I was trans sexual and could not find a good therapist
