Title: Do you think its better to start hrt during the summer or during the school year
Post by: Serenahikaru on June 23, 2014, 11:38:12 AM
I'm not sure which I want to do, I have no problem with either really.  Originally I was going to start in December, but I'm rethinking it.

If you are not full time, perhaps best to start in the summer then by the time you are developing breasts it will be coat/sweater weather then you can easily hide them. So that you can go full time with a bit of development already in place. This was my plan but delays and relationship troubles made me start in the winter and now my development is a bit hard to hide which is putting some pressure on my schedule for going full time.

If you are already full time I don't see that it makes much of a difference.

I'm not full time yet, and that sounds like a really good plan. Thank you.

I think, beginning now, you may begin to change, before anyone knows you, or would have seen you before any changes began, so they wouldn't notice you changing.. sounds confusing, I know.. if you began school looking almost girl-like (well, starting to) then changes wouldn't be as noticeable.  I second the idea about being able to hide, cover up with winter clothes, depending where you are in the world tho.. if you're in Australia.. not so much  ;)

That's a really, really good piece of advice!  So good that I shall follow it myself.  Hide the baby boobs over winter under sweaters and coats and release a decent pair come t-shirt weather next year.  So simple, it's one of those ideas you read and think, "Damn, why didn't I think of that?"

Another plus of starting in summer is that you won't have the stress of classes on your for a little while.  Hormones can give you some ugly mood-swings, and it's best to experience those (or know whether or not you will be experiencing them) when you aren't around anyone except for the people who are closest to you, who will be understanding.

I'm just playing devil's advocate here, but timing HRT so as to prolong keeping your transition a secret seems like a mixed idea.  The only people who are going to notice development are the ones who know you well, and you will have to take the plunge eventually-for me, HRT was the only thing that pushed me to go full time, and I'm very happy I did...plus (and I'm not sure how old you are), when you start hormones can make a huge difference; if I had started just six months earlier, my chances at passing would have been much higher, and I really regret that failure.

Whatever people say, HRT WILL NOT make you look like a woman alone, unless you're starting it at a far younger age, or have hit the genetic lottery...you will just like you did before, with slightly softer features, small breasts, and a slightly more feminine figure.  I've been on hormones for a year and a half, and I have no breasts whatsoever-my advice is not to build your transition plan around the notion that hormones will make you look amazing before you go full time.  That usually takes years of hormones, surgeries, and mad skills with a brush and blowdryer!

True, though I'm a senior this year and I'm sure a amount fair know me even if I'm not the most social, but I shouldn't let peoples opinions stand in my way.

I had top surgery in the winter - coming out to only a very few people beforehand and only telling some people I had my boobs cut off and letting them figure out the implications.

I started T about a week before school started.  It was good for me because I didn't come back as a whole new person.  (not that the 3 months of the summer would have brought that kind of change, but who knows).  I got to ease everyone else into my transition as I eased into it.  I had a lot of great direct/indirect support from other students and faculty, but there wasn't even much need for it.  After I transitioned 2 other transmen in my dept came out and transitioned.

That being said, if you want to attempt coming back to school as a whole new person then I would start as soon as possible towards the beginning of the summer if not a couple months beforehand.  I don't know how fast the lady-hormones work, but changes on T don't seem noticeable at all for a few months at the very least.
