Title: ready for a change
Post by: rfhaas on June 23, 2014, 07:37:33 PM
Hello All,
I'm an older newbie,  kinda feeling this thing out. I'm a 47 year old married RN here in southwest Florida. I have spent my life running from myself, became addicted to drugs. Three years clean and I am coming to the realization that of I don't get honest with myself and come out trans I am going to end up back into the drugs. For a while now I have been letting myself really feel my body and emotions and just that bit of self acceptance has allowed me a bit of peace. I enjoy crossdressing when I can. I am meeting with a therapist in two days to try and figure this out. I have a two year plan in mind to be at out completely (except maybe Dad). The extreme fear of rejection is slowly being overcome with the calmness of my self realization.  I am much more tolerant of others lately.  I think I was projecting my own self hatred on those around me. I am very happy to have a forum like this. If only they had this kind of stuff when I was younger.

amen to this.  Your experience is similar to that of many of us.  We were acting a part and trying our hardest to fit in.  'Running from myself' is a great description.  As even though we didn't really know who we were, we knew what we were supposed to be, and kept focussing on this.  Inevitably stress and damage to others and to ourselves followed.

The positive is that we have stopped running, and we are here for each other.  This is a great time to be alive and we really are here for each other.  We look forward to being able to help you find your way forward.

Safe travels

Aisla

A big warm welcome to the family! I started transition at age 47 myself and have not been disappointed with the results so far. I was injured in the line of duty as a Paramedic/Firefighter and retired so I know the job pressures RN's face. A high stress career on top of repressed transgender issue's is a powder keg. Therapy is a great solid first step and a lot can get resolved along the way. I lost a 16 year marriage to transition, but the alternative was to lose my life. Just know you are by no far means alone and we are all here for you at anytime. You now have a great support system with us, so use it when you need to!  :)
