Title: Tell us about your voice
Post by: Ephemeral on June 28, 2014, 03:05:15 PM
Maybe an interesting sticky subject? Essentially record yourself and your voice and ask for input or just to show-off. We already have threads of this nature but they tend to focus on the visual i.e. face, but one of the more significant differences when one starts testosterone is not the face but the voice!

I'll go first because I wanted some input anyway. This is my voice progression over 4 months and 2 weeks on T:

Wow! Huge difference. I like the accent. :)
The two do not sound anything a like. The first sounds female. And the second sounds male.

I have a hard time hearing my own accent. I wonder if it sounds awfully Swedish or not. I too think I am starting to finally approach a definite male range though I still sometimes get read as female over the phone. Would really like to hear other guys upload theirs too. I can hear differences even between just one month from now, so I hope it will continue to drop further.

And on the plus side, I am actually beginning to really like my own voice. I always thought it sounded awful as female and I always pictured myself in a male range even as a teenager so I remember I was so disappointed when I heard a recording of my voice and it wasn't male.

I'm sure it will drop more, it usually does up to a year or even more. Depends on the person.

Usually you can't tell hearing your own voice, but there is a big difference already. Congrats :)

I've been told it's androgynous and somewhere between male and female.
I'm currently pre-testosterone.

Ephemeral, sounds great! Definitely a change.

Blue Senpai, sounds androgynous to me too. Is that rapping? I know nothing about rap.  :-\ It's just when your voice goes up at the ends of sentences that sounds female to me.

I've recorded some voice clips. I've been on testosterone for just over 3 years, and my voice dropped FAST. This is how much it changed in the first 40 days:
https://soundcloud.com/rex1983/timeline40days/s-UBMI2

This is my voice right at this second:
https://soundcloud.com/rex1983/testing-1/s-TrJB0

The hardest part for me with the voice change is that I was a good singer before my voice changed. This is how I sounded pre-T:
https://soundcloud.com/rex1983/who-wants-to-live-forever-jenny-jackson

This is me singing a couple of months ago:
https://soundcloud.com/rex1983/ive-been-r-j-may-24-next-to-normal

I think transitioning may have ended any possibility of performing musical theatre professionally, but I still really love my male voice.

Yes, it was rapping. I don't have the voice for it right now (female voices aren't exactly good for it) but I can rap fast.
Wow, that voice did drop fast after a month! I already sound like someone that's been on testosterone for 3-4 weeks.

Pre-T:  http://s1097.photobucket.com/user/dustyshakleford/media/vid/pre-tvoice_zpsb4ccb249.mp4.html

Right Now: http://s1097.photobucket.com/user/dustyshakleford/media/vid/TVideo_00002_zpsf278b822.mp4.html

Couldn't get vocaroo to work to record my voice now so I made a video of myself speaking just now.  I only had a video of my voice from before/the day I started T.  Idk why I said I was one day on T when I really had only had a shot.  If I could go back and do it over again I would, but I only made a few months worth of videos and then stopped recording my voice.

MrJ, your second link doesn't work.

MrJ, your second link doesn't work.

Does it work now? I was editing the link to make it private.

I can't get yours to work. They're just black boxes.

I think the reason it's not working is because you made it private.

I was trying to have mine be videos in the thread but took that out and just added links to the two videos.  Hopefully they work now.

The first one is private too, but it's working? I'm not sure why the second one won't work. Through soundcloud, you can get a special URL to share a private track, that's what I did for the first two links.

Blue Senpai, do you mind removing the quote of me? The links are wrong, I edited the post.

wheat thins, your links work now. Wow, what a change! I thought you sounded like a young male pre-T but your post-T is totally different!

Definitely some changes, Hex - sounds good! Also, are you playing Second Life? That was the first online environment I played a male character in (other than the Sims, ha ha), but I never had the patience to figure out how it worked. The graphics have definitely improved.

Fun stuff! Blue Senpai, my initial impression of your voice was that you sounded male but I think it's because you speak with a male speech pattern. MrJ, how long have you been on T? You're right that maybe you won't be able to sing professionally anymore but it depends on how far you go in how you drop etc. But yes, that resonance isn't really what is considered attractive or sought after professionally but I think it depends on what you want to sing too. I know of this guy from a band I'm a fan of who manage to make it work and now I can't imagine them without him despite that his voice is far from attractive but it's the quirk that adds that particular effect that just fits somehow:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Y05TDInaeU

I was told I had a good singing voice too pre-T but I think my voice actually sounds much better now on T. My resonance fits a male voice so much better than female and I am quite curious how my voice will sound like when singing once it has settled.

MrJ, I got inspired and want to record a song where I sang too so here it is:

I wish it wouldn't crack so much when I try higher pitches though.

What are you complaining about Ryan? o.O Sounds perfectly fine to me. Is a little high at times but I wouldn't think about if I didn't know you weren't trans.

I ramped up really slowly dosage wise, and I am still not on a full dose yet:

4 months in:

Today (~9 months in):

http://vocaroo.com/i/s1pknvZn1nQD

In hindsight, I thought it was much deeper than it was before it really started dropping.

I find this intimidating I think more because I'm not sure how to do it than because of my voice. I use google voice and vent and mumble, but I've never recorded myself on purpose to hear the playback. Hmm.

I listened to everybody's clips and I really wish I had recorded my progress, especially in light of the late age I started T and the abnormal voice I started with. Everyone here is impressive in their progress, or incredibly normal in their single recordings. I am distracted by accents and not sure how much that clouds my assessment, and I'm also wondering if I'm supposed to wear horns when I do stuff. Nothing I record is going to live up to that.

Here's my try on that site. It was my first attempt, and I didn't recite it all correctly but I think it's good enough to leave be. I'm a couple years into hormone therapy.

If anyone else wants to try, all you have to do is click the link and click the site and click record and click allow, all simple and it gives breadcrumbs throughout the process.

Haha thanks. It's really weird to hear my voice and I'm glad it's okay. It sounds like an alien to me. I'm impressed by anyone's ability to get used to hearing their own voice filtered through electronics instead of bone and meat.

i'll have to see if i can find  amic somewhere, cuz i don't have any kind of recording device XD

I have  avid of me about a week on T on youtube but now im about 4.5 months on T and my voice is very low.  at least it can be. I still don't have a comfortabel place for it to come out naturally cuz i always sort of talked in my head a little, but now if i do that my voice cracks very easily. but if i talk low it doesn't sound forced or anything. and who knows where it'll end up im only 4.5 months in.

I also can't sing at all. used to be able to, and well enough because i am a music major i have to do it for a grade, but nope can't sing at all anymore my range has turned to sh*t. I give new respect to guys who have a falsetto and can even get up there cuz damn it aint happenin for me XD
